Ponting? Attacking cap? Nagpur test. India in deep trouble 6 down. Small lead. He bowls parttimers to escape a fine!

Result. Lost test and series.
Yeah there's no denying Ponting has had brain explosions but I don't think there are as bad as everyone seems to suggest. I, however, would not have Ponting in my top tier of captains either.

This has been my whole point.. Ikki said captaincy is a reason for Ponting going > than Murali.. And I feel, there is no way that is the reason... In fact, I think there is no reason Ponting > Murali in any real way as cricketers..

Shocking isnt it that someone would praise Ponting.
Ha ha a joke to put Tub in 2nd level.
Yes I saw that, and I agree with it. What is BS is that you called Ponting "WAY too negative". He is by far the most positive captain ATM.
yeah, declaring at 450 is the only way to be an attacking captain.. 8-) Want to check what is BS, read your post again..
Guys, the snide remarks and attempts to cause arguments in this thread are not acceptable, for example the remarks above. By all means debate the list of great captains, but let's not derail the thread into a war about Ricky Ponting. We all know that people differ in their opinion of him.

If this continues, I will shut the thread for a few hours until everyone has cooled off.

Although I agree to an extent, there are plenty of reasons why I would have Ponting > Murali in my AT XI

Why? Ponting's batting and Murali's bowling nullify each other but Ponting is undoubtedly the better fielder, and has actually had the pressure of leading a side. How is he not a better cricketer than Murali?

because Ponting's batting DOES NOT nullify Murali's bowling.

Isn't that little different from rating the greatness levels?

I mean, for starters, you need only 1 spinner but 6 batsmen.. :)
I'll leave that debate over to others who actually seem to be obsessively passionate over either one. I was just saying If I was to put together an AT XI, Ponting would have a higher chance of making my AT XI than Murali- Aside from the fact that there are 6 batsmen!

I would like to think we have moved on past that.. But apologies to Tumtum and to everyone.. heat of the moment stuff. :(

I get that.. What I meant to say was...

Let us forget Ponting and Murali now.. Take a batsman X and spinner Y..

Think that spinner Y is the 2nd greatest spinner of all time.. And X is the 5th greatest batsman of all time and 4th greatest middle order batsman of all time. If you end up selecting a XI, it is conceivable that you will pick X and not pick Y.. But does this mean necessarily that X is a greater cricketer than Y???

The extra qualities that Batsmen X provides, such as brilliant fielding etc, may make him a greater cricketer and asset than spinner Y. i can see your point though

If that is true Sanga is a much better cricketer than Warne. Sangb.s batting equals WARNE's bowling, and Sanga's wicketkeeping is better than Warne's batting.

Lol, what am I typing!

Surprisingly you have omitted safest slip fielder - Brian McMillan

I do rate Stephen Fleming & Herschelle Gibbs as well...
