*Official* India in Sri Lanka 2010 - Tests

It's sad that guys like Irfan Pathan and RP Singh aren't considered anymore. I was there at all the days of that WACA test in 2007/2008 and both of them bowled beautifully. A lot of the players that contributed to the success back then have just disappeared and it seems like this selection panel is more interested in continuing with mediocrity rather than recalling some proven performers with a bit of ability and skill.
Sadly these guys have regressed a lot in this period. RP Singh was pretty good 2007-2008 but now seems to be just cannon fodder. Irfan has lost speed and swing. How do the Indian pacers manage this consistently?

I reckon Sri Lanka's gonna knock off India as the top Test team after this series. Their batsmen are very strong and India have a few holes in their bowling attack.

India is worse on playing on slow dead tracks these days. The bowling does not have the penetration compared to other attacks to take wickets on such tracks.
It showed agaisnt South Africa for the first test and is showing up again.

India's best chance to win is either in swinging conditions(As the bowlers are naturally swing bowlers) or on a dry track with bounce which helps their kind of spinners, specially Harbhajan and also helps our bowlers become more penetrative. And this is where the batting gives us the edge. As shown in the second test against south africa.
Slow low flattish tracks don't suit India at the moment.
Agree. The experience in the batting lineup does give us a bit of an edge in helpful conditions for bowling.

Since we are discussing Indian fast bowling at the moment. This is a list of fast bowlers that Australia have used over the past two years-

MG Johnson
SR Watson
DE Bollinger

PM Siddle
BW Hilfenhaus
RJ Harris

B Lee
SW Tait
NW Bracken
DP Nannes

SR Clark
CJ McKay
AB McDonald
B Geeves
B Laughlin
SM Harwood
JR Hazlewood

I think the bold would have certainly made the Indian team by now and probably be regulars.Perhaps others too...

Clearly shows in terms of pace bowling how far behind India is at the moment.
Could probably make a similar size list of Indian spin bowlers that would make it into our side

Agreed. Is it just me or does Australia look might suspicious as a team heading into the Ashes in November? Dropping their opening 3 ODIs against England and then dropping a test to Pakistan; being bowled out for 88?! Something tells me their on ground ready to crumble.

Welcome mate! Probably not the thread for it, but as long as we're playing it at home we'll be fine. Our batsmen enjoy the flat pitches and won't have to deal with a moving ball and our bowlers are pretty good with the conditions as well. Lucky this series isn't in England or we'd be stuffed.

Thanks! I'm streaming the Sri Lanka v India test on a site that has no chat feature. Alas though there's nothing like watching the match while talking cricket over a cup of tea at 1 AM that's going to keep you up until the wee hours of the morning.

Sangakkara and Jayawardene have to be one of the greatest batting partnerships ever. It just seems like whenever they are both at the crease Sri Lanka are going to get at least another 100 runs.

50 off 100 now. These games are becoming a bit of a joke, love lower scoring games..
This could still produce a result. Don't understand why a 500 and 80 Vs 350 and 220 is such a bad game, tbh... At least it shows bowlers had to work hard to get the wickets...

I can't see those figures happening though at all. Sri Lanka aren't usually the type of team who will give a generous declaration and they are without Murali and Malinga so will find it difficult to get 20 Indian wickets for say 570 like you've written. Also find it hard to see them make only 80 in the second innings, time will tell, but I'm thinking they'll make over 600 and India will make over 400.

I meant them making 80 for 2 or something and winning the game, tbh :)

Sri Lanka are scoring these runs pretty fast, still the chance of a result with 330 overs left in the game and 450 runs on the board.

I don't mean to rub it in, but I got absolutely hammered from every direction 7-8 months ago for suggesting India wouldn't remain no.1 for long due to their bowling being remarkably weak bowling attack & considering they're struggling as much as they are, even in sub-continent conditions confirms this belief. Presumably they'll lose their no.1 slot if they lose this series, can anyone confirm this?

Incidentally, still seems strange to me that Murali pulled out after the 1st test of the series, surely this would be tailor-made for him if SL do rack up 600+ first innings
