Pretty much all my cricket watched in the said period. I started watching in 1991.

My team would be -

Sehwag
Hayden
Lara
Tendulkar (captain)
Ponting
Kallis
Flintoff
Gilchrist
Pollock
Akram

At the end of the day, Flintoff was a pretty average all-rounder for all bar 18 months or so of his career and shouldnt go close to a team of the decade let alone this

Also, given the depth of the batting, you might as well pick the best bowlers so punt Pollock and select Ambrose or McGrath

Not Terrible
Virender Sehwag
Matthew Hayden
Brian Lara
Sachin Tendulkar
Steve Waugh (c)
Jacques Kallis
Adam Gilchrist (wk)
Shane Warne
Waqar Younis
Curtley Ambrose
Glenn McGrath

Few interesting choices in there, like Warne over Murali (the batting clinches it) and Waugh over Ponting (batting at 5, captaincy and team dynamics). Waqar Ambrose and McGrath would make a helluva pace trio.

If you want to go conventional, * for captain.

What about a team of the 70's + 80's to take them on? Who'd win?
How about this?

1. B. Richards
2. S.M. Gavaskar
3. I.V.A. Richards
4. G.S. Chappell
5. R. Pollock
6. Imran Khan*
7. R. Marsh +
8. R.J. Hadlee
9. M.D. Marshall
10. D.K. Lillee
11. Addul Qadir

Reckon that team could beat allcomers, tbh. Selected Richards and Pollock from South Africa since they were the best in the world during that period anyway.

And what a fast bowling attack! Qadir is the spinner by default, I guess. Either him or Underwood, but spinners were lean pickings in the days before Warne and Murali.

depends on whether we are selecting 'cricketers who've played in the last 20 years' or 'cricketers based on their performances in the last 20 yrs'...in the 2nd case, my team stands. and in the first case, i'll take imran as captain in place of ponting and make kallis open...and marshall for ambrose too, as joe says...

Obviously it has to be performances. Else Tendulkar would make the team of the 80s which sounds ridiculous.
