Nah, get rid of post counts, I can't see any benefit from them and they can often seem (even if they aren't) to be a kind of badge of cliquey seniority. Bit initmidating for a newcomer to try to argue with someone with 50,000 posts or something.

Don't personally think I know of anyone who actually gets intimidated by large post counts on a forum tbh. This is a serious non-issue for mine.

You might not know of them, doesn't mean they don't exist.

Plus I get seriously depressed when I see how much time I've spent on here, not good for my mental health.

Yeah, I've found that forums tend to remove them as a token effort in addressing a problem they have absolutely no answer to just to make it look like they're doing something. I don't think they cause any problems at all really. Pasag's the only one who's done any sort of research on this though so I'd be interested in hearing his reasoning.

One argument in favour of post counts is a common theme brought up throughout this thread - treatment of n00bs. We'd still have join date but if someone has a small amount of posts, I'm gonna be more polite to them if they start a dupe thread or whatever than if one of the clowns with 20,000+ posts does it (just to use one example).

Mods don't live under a rock. They'll know who's new and who's been posting for five years whether post counts are listed or not.

I meant by members, not mods. Am certain it would be possible for mods to see post counts and not us peasants.

How am I supposed to prove my superiority to posters without numerical evidence
Did someone post before you GIMH?

I have anyone under 6k posts on ignore.

As someone who I would guess would be considered in the “middle range” in terms of post count (not a high post count, not too low either), I don’t think it really matters. I would be surprised to know that a new member got intimidated by a high post count of another member. Also, wouldn’t the perceived problem of mods showing leniency to higher post count members still remain? Whether you show the post count or not, the mods would know who the more active (and probably senior) members on the site are. They can still show leniency, with or without the post count there.

I don't mean to stringently defend post counts, I just don't think they do even the slightest bit of harm. Who initially treated posters like zaremba or Penguissimo differently because they only had a few posts to their name? If someone's a good poster they'll be respected as such completely independent of their post count.

It's a matter of whether to rearrange the deckchairs on the Titanic IMO. Except things aren't as bad as they were on the Titanic.

Someone give me a negative on removing post counts though.

If it may make a difference, yet most definitely will not be a negative, I see no reason why not to do it.

I dont take myself serious enough on the internet to worry if someone tries to undermine my integrity
More fool you then. People are the same regardless of whether they're communicating via the internet, telephone or absolutely anything else whatsoever.
