I'm NOT impressed by that selection, he's nearly as old as Chanders and offers nothing new..
When 5 of our best 6 players are injured, and the only experienced batsman of any quality is Gayle, I'm thrilled to see Hinds in the mix. The squad is severely lacking quality at the moment, and I can't think of anyone else who deserves to be called up at the moment.

Did the Windies really make 395 off 45 overs today? No wonder Ruddy went to Question Time instead of hanging around at Manuka Oval.

Windie, based upon current form in the domestic league, who do you think would've been a better selection?

Doesn't say much for the Windies attack the way that Tom Cooper smashed them.
Half their side is injured. Not sure what anyone expects of the Windies here. Series is going to be Chris Gayle out early, game won.

Gayle desperately needs to play well for West Indies to have ANY chance of winning this tournament. Everyone else is injured.

There are so many West Indians injured for this series. One feels Gayle will have to play well if they are to have half a chance.

It's a real pity the Windies have so many injuries, they've really only got the one matchwinner in Gayle, and if he doesn't perform it's all over for them IMO.

I think Chris Gayle's performances are central to the West Indies here. If he doesn't perform, they can forget about even winning a match.

I reckon the Windies are a huge chance in this series, especially if the selectors wake up to themselves and drop that joke of a one day cricketer that is Chris Gayle. With no injuries to speak of, there's no reason to carry him.

Realistically, ODI series such as this one don't mean a helluva lot....

This is a good opportunity for some of the youngsters and fringe players to get some experience of what it's like to play a big side.

I will be happy if the Windies win one or two ODIs. I don't expect them to win the series, but I do hope that some of the younger players come out of the series with an enhanced rep.

I'd go...

CH Gayle
TM Dowlin
LMP Simmons
RS Morton
WW Hinds
KA Pollard
D Ramdin (wk)
DR Smith
DJG Sammy
NO Miller
KAJ Roach

I would prefer if there were options other than Morton around, but I don't think Deonarine is a good enough OD player, and Morton is relatively stable in ODI cricket. Rampaul is just bowling woefully at the moment, so Smith and Sammy preferred to him. Brendan Nash is also around, but unless he opens the batting, I wouldn't have him. And Dowlin has pretty much booked his spot for the series.

Of course this team will differ greatly from the one the WI selectors pick.

For the first ODI, I'd leave out Hinds, because he'll probably feel out of sorts, after such a long flight....

Given the limited experience of most the younger batsmen, I'd play Nash in the first ODI.

Chris Gayle
Travis Dowlin
Lendl Simmons
Narsing Deonarine
Brendan Nash
Kieron Pollard
Denesh Ramdin (wk)
Dwayne Smith
Darren Sammy
Nikita Miller
Kemar Roach

He'll have a couple of days after he arrives, and he'd likely still be better than Deonarine anyway. More to be learned by the youngsters if the team can compete on the whole, IMO.

And why Nash for experience when Morton is more experienced?

I have a little more faith in Nash's experience than Morton's experience....
That said, Morton's game is better suited to ODI cricket than Nash's. However, Morton has a bad habit of leaving his brain in the pavilion when he comes out to bat!

But Morton actually has ODI runs and Nash has never been an OD player of any note.

EDIT: Nash averages < 23 in 50odd OD matches.
