Surprise packets Cricketweb Green travelled to Pickford to take on the mighty Black's side coming off a disappointing draw against Colts in their previous match, this was an important game for both sides as they were looking to push their claims for a top 2 spot, also with the international season just around the corner around a dozen players from there two sides were personally trying to push their claims.
cricketweb Green chose to bat on a first day heavily interupted by rain, only 65 overs were possible but that was enough for an impressive Black's bowling unit to rip through a below par batting line up. Youngster Henry Pearce made his maiden first class half century at the top order while fellow opener Nick Scott fell cheaply, reasonable contributions from the likes of Dylan Cole, Ben Hawker and Andrew Garven ensured that their total was semi respectable, however the fact that Pearce's half century was the only score over 50 showed that it was a tough deck to score on and the stop start nature of the first day upset the rhythym of the batting side. Test paceman Nick Borcich claimed 4 wickets in an excellent day for him while spin twins Neil Pickup and Dave Richards bagged 3 each. Green all out for 212.
After negating one over at the end of day one the second morning also saw persistent rain hanging around, through all the stops and starts Blacks had slumped to 6/152 with only star batsman Andrew Cloete looking at home in making a quickfire 51, however a series of meaningful partnerships between Blake Donald, Dave Richards, Nick Borcich and Heath Davis improved their position to all out for 348, giving Black a healthy 136 run lead on the first innings. The star with the ball was undoubtedly Bryce Cunningham, the outspoken all rounder would no doubt have impressed national selectors with his 6/99 against the best batting line up in the country. Captain Mat Mitchell gave him good support and bowled steadily during the good partnerships Blacks put on, he deserved the three wickets he took and could have easily had more.
Green set out in their second innings knowing a big total was required for have any hope in this match, things started well as Nick Scott and Henry Pearce put on 71 for the first wicket before youngster Pearce gifted a catch to Josh Ritchie in the gully, under seige test batsman Andrew Garven was next to go for a rapid fire 19 and he was followed soon after by Scott for a well made 68. Robert Cribb continued his impressive form as he made a patient 68 while Ben Hawker followed up his maiden century against Red with an even 50 today, the tail then fell over without much fight and it seemed inevitible that Black would have little trouble chasing down the required runs. Neil Pickup got his second three wicket haul of the match while Nick Borcich and Dave Richards were again among the wickets with two each, Green all out for 295 setting Black 160 to win.
At 60/1 needing just 100 to win the match was practically in the bag, but then disaster struck. Perhaps it was the ****y nature of the Black batting line up or just good aggressive bowling from a bloke who doesn't give up but Bryce Cunningham ripped the heart out of the top order when he first got the wicket of Dan Smith for 25 and then Andrew Cloete and Daniel Speirs, Martyn Corrin then span his way to a couple of wickets and all of a sudden Black had slumped to 72/6. Ash Chaulk and Dave Richards steadied the ship with what looked to be a match winning partnership of 58 but again quick wickets fell to Corrin and it was game on, with 28 runs needed to win and two wickets in hand Heath Davis and Ash Chaulk went on the attack and got their side to within 2 runs of victory. Up steps Xavier Rose who finds the outside edge of Chaulks bat and the wicketkeeper was himself caught behind, tensions were sky high as Neil Pickup strode to the crease for what he hoped was a match winning innings, however he could only last as long as three balls before spooning one to short mid off where hero of the match Bryce Cunningham took a low two handed catch to win the game for his team. Black all out for 158, a 1 run loss.

Both these sides came into this match hoping for improved showings on their opening performances of the season, for Blue their batting has been nothing short of disasterous in most cases while Red's youngsters have impressed their elder statesmen need to lift their games for them to progress up the table.
Blue captain Travis Demeza won the toss and elected to bat on a sunny morning, veteran opener Thamba Mamesh was under attack by some hostile fast bowling from Martin West while David Kennett was the steading influence at the other end. Mamesh's stay lasted just 18 balls when West got one through his defences for 11, Rob Bowen was the next to go after his counter attack approach failed to work, he will no doubt have copped a bit of a spray from his skipper for his lacklustre shot selection. Wickets fell at regular intervals as Blue failed to mount a partnership of any note, Sean Fuller and Liam Camps continued to look the most impressive in the middle order but their contributions of 28 and 25 were no where near enough. It was a good effort from Red's quick bowling threesome as Kennett, Watt and West all bagged three wickets and gave little away. Blue all out for just 159.
Red's reply began disasterously when Hakon Mork returning from injury went for just 10, Rob Dauth fell for the same score to continue his miserable season thus far and when Swarajeet Singh was bowled by Sean Fuller for 35 it was a match. David Kearsley and Mitch Rapp then combined for a good partnership as both continued to show good form to start the season, Kearsley made 60 on the back of his ton in the previous match while for Rapp it was a well made 55. Then the competitions two most in form batsmen joined each other to put on a 157 run stand, John Heads fresh from his maiden first class ton was again at the top of his game as he made 68 while for Callum Dinnen it was a long awaited first ton of his own, he was the last man to fall and he celebrated while leaving the field with 116 next to his name. Liam Camps was the pick of the bowlers with 4/50 while Sean Fuller and Travis Demeza also grabbed a couple. Red all out 399.
Blue knew they would need to produce their best batting effort of the season to even have a chance of saving this match, it didn't start in the best of fashion's when Stephen Young fell for just 5 and then Rob Bowen for 15. Thamba Mamesh though looked in a postive mood as he raced to 45 before falling victim to David Watt, Sean Fuller then went for the same score as Blue dropped to 140/4. Liam Camps got himself among the runs with a well paced 51 before Angelo Loganathan took over and raced to a better than a run a ball maiden first class ton, his 132 off 122 balls included 17 boundaries as he announced himself as a star of the future. Michael Cannon also made his best contribution of the season with the willow as his 69 ensured Blue had something to bowl at, Blue were all out for 410 after David Watt bagged 4 wickets while Kennett and Ames had 2 each.
Red's chase of 171 got off to a bad start when the top 3 fell in quick succession, precariously placed at 55/3 David Kearsley kept a cool head and saw the job through while the rest of the top order had a snooze in the dressing rooms. Even the in form pair of Heads and Dinnen failed to make a significant score as Kearsley's 52 not out was only helped my Mitch Rapp's 27, young medium pace Charlie Downes gave Blue a chance by snaring two wickets but it was a fairly comfortable 4 wicket win when Ed Ames hit the winning runs.
