This is increasingly looking like the worst insertion I can remember. Obv Hussain was slaughtered for the 1st test in 2002/03, but we were always likely to lose that one. This, otoh, was absolutely crucial. Two close sides, SA vulnerable, and we say 'no thank you very much' to first use of a pitch that's looking like disintegrating by the end of Day 3.

Are you saying that people born in south africa are naturally bad tacticians?

I think Pieterson and Collingwood should counter-attack. Some aggressive batting might turn the game around.

Nah. I think England should just bat and bat (if they can). Would be quite happy to see England grind their way to 500 even if it makes a win unlikely. Even if they get to 350-400 by middle of the second session tomorrow (more realistic expectation) it makes it very difficult to South Africa to win, whilst putting a bit of pressure on them not to collapse (which would give England a small period of time to hold out, or have a stab at a small chase).

If England bat quickly, get all out for 350 by the end of today or early tomorrow then it gives SA plenty of opportunity to set something like 320+ off 100 overs on a 5th day pitch, meaning they have a very real chance of forcing victory (and I wouldn't fancy England to chase it at all).

Plenty of batting to come but Colly the only one you'd bet on making a ton.

This is Ian Bell's big test - everyone says hge can't make tough runs. Would love him to prove us wrong now.

Just checking the scorecard though, and we had Saffa 4 down for less, and our lower order is stronger. Colly is in good form. But obviously the pitch is harder to play now (so I'm told).

I am too optimistic

After looking at Bell's recent run of scores in Tests away from home I'm optimistic:
