Two of Elgar's four hundreds this season were scored in bore draws and he has never scored a run when representing Emerging RSA or RSA A. Not a big fan of Rudolph but I would currently take him over Elgar.
Other factors you overlooked in this statement. Elgar will most likely open for SA in the very near future + vs Rudolph he has many years ahead of him + the ability to form a partnership with Smith for many years into the future. Besides he started of in a really weak fashion and is only improving. Maybe he is a bit too young.

Albie would have made a better replacement for Kallis I think. ****ty bowler but he can bowl his pies occasionally as a 5th bowler not as first change. His asset would be as a no.6 batsmen which he normally does for the Titans. Everybody else moves up a batting position and the balance is retained.

Indeed it doesn't. But ENG should start doing like IND & start picking a few players on ODI form & raw telent, since our FC system isn't producing consistent quality.

Bell is the 2000s version of Hick, he should be banished from the test set-up.
Please dont insult Hick.

Funny to see how far down the pecking order Mckenzie has dropped. Possibly a better player than half of the batsmen being suggested, would it be too difficult for them to actually bat him in his regular batting position?

Hmm think we need to move forward. There are soooo many batsman that can make the team in our top 6 and becuase of that, he is just too old now.

ODI success does not equate to Test success.
It doesn't necessarily, I agree. I'd prefer it to ODI failure as an indicator for likelihood of test apptitude tho.

Morgan does look to have something about him. He might not quite be ready for tests, but it would be refreshing to see our selectors give the new bloke a go rather than rounding up the usual suspects the next time a spot in the top six becomes open.

It's a sticky one and no doubt one that's be thoroughly debated on here. I'd be inclined to agree though, I'd imagine the number of players where Test ability ~ ODI ability is much much greater than the number of players whose Test ability >>> ODI ability.

I'd like to think our current top 6 is safe for a while though.
Strauss
Cook
Trott
Pietersen
Collingwood
Prior

Looks pretty stable to me.
Unless of course we opt for 6 batsmen + Prior in which case I'm not sure Morgan is the man for that spot yet. Though I don't think that 6 batsmen and 4 bowlers is the best option personally.
So yeah, if we run with the top 6 that I mentioned by the time Collingwood (I guess) needs to be replaced, Morgan could be the next man in line.

With Flintoff gone, no reason to bat Prior @ 6. He should be back down @ 7.

Plus 4 bowlers IMO is the best option depending on team the team we play. Looking ahead of this SA test series as i've said before i believe 4 quicks should play in all test, except the flat centurion deck in the 1st test (where Swann will be needed).

Yip. Collingwood a good example of an ODI player (lousy FC record as it happens) who's turned out competent enough at the proper stuff

Quite happy with Prior at 6. I wouldn't bat him at 7 just because he's the keeper. If we play 7 batsmen including him, great, but in that case Morgan would be just fine at 7. It's where Alec Stewart started (as a pure batsman at that stage) IIRC.

Who bats at seven though? Don't think Broad is ready for it - certainly didn't seem to be at Headingley.

Well a 7,8,9 of Broad, Swann and Plunkett? is pretty decent I'd say.
Large part depends on the make up of the bowling attack really. Who is going to play? Broad, Swann, Onions, Anderson and....?
Must be forgetting somebody

If we wind up playing Wright at 7, it's almost like he plays the same 'spare man' role he often plays in ODIs.

Yeah but there's not many options besides him. Nobody offers the same balance that Flintoff does, we either strengthen the batting and go with a 4 man attack + part timers or we can go with a 5 man attack. People like Wright and Plunkett are a bit of a bodged attempt at doing both of these things and we aren't necessarily better off for trying to do that.
