The 1st test squad has been named for SA as follows: Proteas’ Castle Test squad: Graeme Smith (Nashua Cape Cobras, capt), Hashim Amla (Nashua Dolphins), Mark Boucher (Chevrolet Warriors), AB de Villiers (Nashua Titans), Friedel de Wet (bizhub Highveld Lions), JP Duminy (Nashua Cape Cobras), Paul Harris (Nashua Titans), Jacques Kallis (Chevrolet Warriors), Ryan McLaren (Diamond Eagles), Morne Morkel (Nashua Titans), Makhaya Ntini (Chevrolet Warriors), Wayne Parnell (Chevrolet Warriors), Alviro Petersen (bizhub Highveld Lions), Ashwell Prince (Chevrolet Warriors), Dale Steyn (Nashua Titans). Really feel that Dean is unlucky and that Boucher is lucky. I would have swapped Mclaren for Smuts and Ntini is being showed heaps of love given that he has lost all form and pace. My prediction is England go 1 up due to crap selection before our selectors wake up. Enjoy the freebie.

Well I just hears that kallis may be out the whole Test series so I am hoping that Smuts will fill in. I guess the selectors chose De Wet as he played in England so may have some experience over the players. The bowling selection is pathetic and just further proves that our selectors overlook form. There is no reason why Boucher, Ntini, De Wet and Parnell should make the team.

A pool of possibilities based on form has been ignored: Theron, Vilander, Smuts, Elgar, Rossouw, Kuhn. They are probably not good enough.

Who said he did anything wrong? It is about someone who is better than he is and that has many years ahead of them. In ODI there is Van Wyk and in Test there is Kuhn. What do these guys have to do to get in to the team? Thier batting averages are faaar higher than Boucher had when he made test debut. Boucher has alos steadily lost form and run making especially in test matches.

He's played all of 4 Tests in 2009 - hardly conclusive of poor form.

As for player's averages when first picked, that's totally irrelevant as these other players weren't around 12 years ago.

Still time for our crap selection to trump your crap selection.
I shouldn't give up just yet.

Plus we're always capable of folding to anyone, anytime, & anywhere, even if the selectors don't mess up.

You know what really grates me is that our selectors treat our player like s**t Tsotsobe took 4 wickets against Australia at thier fortress and we never heard again of him in ODI's Selecting Ntini because it is his 100th game is not on and it is known that they did a lot of marketing on this game long before the time without giving though to his age or pace. I would love to know if any other country who had a genuine spot available for an opener would ignore thier second highest run scorer who only happens to be second due to a record knock by the person in 1st. A side loses thier star all rounder and ignore his most likely inform replacement.

Agree with Jboss about Ntini.SA has been carrying him along at least since when SA toiured ENG last year. Way passed his peak.

Indeed, I can certainly see us somehow contriving to pick Wright and leave out Onions. Bell instead of Trott also possible

Yes he has been a god servant but if they wish to give hime his 100th game then they should rather do it with the series having been won. There are a ton of young bowlers that can share the bowling. Smuts(most logical fill in for kallis), Theron, Zondeki, Philander, Morkell, Steyn, Harris, Tsotsobe. Most teams like to move forward, not ours. Prince has played 1 game at test level opening and has been very succesful in the middle yet they overlook the opener who has made 4 hundreds this season and can bowl a bit. Yawn not gonna carry on becaus it wont help.

That's good because you talk a lot of nonsense. Smuts is a batsman who bowls some left-arm spin, he isn't a "bowler" and neither is he the logical replacement for Kallis, one franchise hundred illustrates that.

Yeah, second XI and club cricket. de Wet never played first class cricket in England.

Think de Wet came to the attention of the selectors in a Champions Trophy warm-up the Proteas played against the Lions in September. Despite taking only one wicket, de Wet was apparently very impressive and it was the same game where Virus scored some runs. Very surprising selection though considering his age and first class form but it does show you that the selectors think pace is what is going to beat England.
