I think he's a useful part of their test attack, personally. He's not exactly a star strike bowler but on even on the flattest decks he often finds a way to nab a wicket from somewhere. He bowled horrendously in the home series against Aus where conditions demanded holding a line and length, and there are a lot of bowlers better than him when accuracy is crucial, but I'd quite like him in the side on dead tracks. It's hard to read his length so there's a bit of an unsettling effect for batsmen, and at least you know his edges aren't going to drop short.
We were talking about McLaren; not Morkel. Or at least I was. :p

Darn was a bad day for SA and never seen them play so bad. A big thank you to CSA for free suite to watch the game. The lady at the bar said cost them around R2000 for the box for the day, whcih is more than the winning team gets. All drinks + food were free too :)

I am calling for Dumminys head too as that is third time he has fallen to short ball this season. Rossouw and Elgar are making VERY strong cases for a birth in that test team. Smith made an noob decision to bat under overcast conditions but all is well.

Series will probably be a draw which will put HUGE imputus on the test series which I am gunning for.

SA test team may well be (with absense of kallis).

1)Minki (oops) Smith
2)Elgar
3)Amla
4)AB
5)JP
6)Rossouw
7)Boucher
8)Harris
9)Parnell
10)Morkell
11)Steyn

And this one is to king kallis...

Donno what pooint you are trying to make about Boucher and Devilliers. Yes AB did well the other night and badly today. Boucher failed today again and the selectors fd up again. Even the ladies that work for CSA say that there is big behind the scenes BS with grandpa Boucher still playing.

Botham's Test XI would be:

Strauss
Cook
Trott
Pietersen
Collingwood
Prior +
Broad
Swann
Seamer (Sidebottom/Plunkett/whoever else is in the side)
Anderson
Onions
Yea its utter madness to consider batting Broad @ 7 in tests

I'd personally go in with:

Strauss
Cook
Trott
Pietersen
Collingwood
Bell
Prior +
Broad
Swann
Anderson
Onions
As you rightfully said the 3 quicks plus Swann in a 4-man aren't good enough to take 20 wickets in a test againts that SA batting lineup if they bat with sense & dont collapse brainless liie what AUS did in the Ashes.

Outside of the 1st test @ Centurion which is flat wicket i wouldn't play Swann. 4-seamers all the way. Plus as i've mentioned before in this thread i strongly believe if the wickets in Jo'Brug & Durban have the same bounce that AUS had earlier this year, we will regret not picking Harmison.

Anderson hovered around the 82-86mph mark; Broad sensibly decided to hold back on pace a little and concentrate on pitching it in the right place. He was averaging about 84/85mph with a quickest delivery of 89mph iirc.

Very good that Colly & Anderson asmoking it in ODIs. They have criminally ridiculed on this site over the years. The haters will give them due respect now..

What speeds were Anderson and Broad hitting today. Mainly 130s or low 140s?
From what I saw Broad was around the 83mph mark, but I didn't see the whole innings.

What's really encouraging is that he's ironed out a major problem with his bowling action in that he's bringing his left arm through much better than he used to. His action used to be ruined by that arm flailing out towards mid-off as he bowled but he now brings it through properly, and his action looks much smoother and must be more efficient and powerful as a result.

He seemed to be getting some useful bounce while I was watching.

Heh would pay money to hear a show where Boycott just goes off on one, uncensored.

Don't think calling a SA player a f***ing tosser qualifies as a tirade though. More of a observation.

McLaren getting out, was apparently a slightly wide delivery he went after and got out for 0. I'm thinking Boycott didn't reckon much to the shot at 78-5.

Haha, Jimmy Anderson, my favourite English cricketer these days. I've said it before & I'll say it again, he's one of the most potent swing bowlers going around when he's on song. Didn't see any of this game, but have seen Anderson when he's bowling with good pace & rhythm before & this performance doesn't surprise me at all.

For those who saw the game, was it a case of South Africa playing too loosely & over-confidently on a more difficult track after coming off their massive 350 or was it just great bowling ? (anticipating most will say combo of both)

Is there any context to the Boycott comment?
Boycs was going on (as he always does) about how he doesn't rate McLaren as a batsman. Then McLaren got out for a duck to a poor shot at a time when his team was already in trouble. At exactly the same moment as the other commentator described the wicket, you could hear an ejaculation (as they used to say) from Boycott. I couldn't hear what he said, but it was clearly Boycs and he was clearly very excited that McLaren had proved him right.

 I could so see that. Love Boycs, may be getting on, but never gets old for me
