Yes indeed, because England are really terrible at getting past the first round in World Cups:unsure:

Anyway, Fallon is intrinsically evil, so the Kiwi's victory tainted IMHO:)
Evil? And why might that be?

Edit: I see you don't like Plymouth Argyle then

Fair play to the Enzedders. Know squat about the strength (or otherwise) of Bahrainian footy, but you can only beat what's put in front of you.
I find it amazing tbh that tiny Bahrain came fifth out of 43 teams in Asia, in front of China, Saudi Arabia, Iran etc.

But anyway, will be looking forward to December 4th to see which group NZ are in.

the only downside was the guy in front of us who really shouldn't have been taking his shirt off...
Haha - does that mean you didn't take part in the Phoenix/now-All Whites end of game tradition?

Just out of curiosity I had a look at the Air New Zealand website about a week ago to see what the flights were looking like from Auckland to Wellington yesterday and Friday - absolutely packed. That crowd last night looked electric. I've never been to the Wellington Sevens but from observation it looked just as good, just without the drunks and fancy dress.

AFC/OFC: NZ 0-0, 1-0 Bahrain
CONCACAF/CONMEBOL: Costa Rica 0-1 Uruguay (Uruguay the winners in a pretty even match, exploiting a Costa Rican injury with Lugano scoring after picking up his own rebound from a corner. Belgian-based Randall Azofeifa was sent off in the second half, but Uruguay wasted their opportunity against ten men, though they had a pretty confident penalty appeal turned down.)
Wafer 1: Russia 2-1 Slovenia (Dima Bilyaletdinov scored a couple of nice goals, but Slovenia only need to win 1-0 following a late lapse in the Russian defence.)
Wafer 2: Portugal 1-0 Bosnia and Hercegovina (both sides missed plenty of chances - Bosnia hit the woodwork twice within ten seconds - but with no away goal, the task will be tough in return. Martin Atkinson was asked to ref, for some bizarre reason. At least it's not Attwell.)
Wafer 3: Greece 0-0 Ukraine (apparently as boring as it sounds. Kyrgiakos missed a big chance in injury time, Gekas had a ball in the net but whistled for offside, and both teams had no more than a couple of chances each.)
Wafer 4: Republic of Ireland 0-1 France (France pretty dominant and got a deserved win, though Ireland could have equalised late on.)

Africa:
Group A:
Morocco 0-2 Cameroon (limp performance from the hosts again, no wins in six matches and they struggled through their initial qualifying, too; in any case, the result didn't matter overly as...)
Togo 1-0 Gabon (Adebayor didn't score but Togo still won and are going to the Africa Cup of Nations. Too bad for Manchester City.)

Code:
Cameroon 6 4 1 1 9-2 13 WC, ACN
Gabon 6 3 0 3 9-7 9 ACN
Togo 6 2 2 2 3-7 8 ACN
Morocco 6 0 3 3 3-8 3 E
¨
Group B:

Mozambique 1-0 Tunisia (trying to defend and counter their way to the group win, Tunisia were surprised by 32-year-old Dario, who in his 86th cap scored the goal to confirm Mozambique's first Africa Cup of Nations appearance since 1998 and to throw Tunisia out of the party in South Africa.)
Kenya 2-3 Nigeria (meanwhile, all sorts of chaos here, but Obafemi Martins the eventual hero.)

Code:
Nigeria 6 3 3 0 9-4 12 WC, ACN
Tunisia 6 3 2 1 7-4 11 ACN
Mozambique 6 2 1 3 3-5 7 ACN
Kenya 6 1 0 5 5-11 3 E
Group C:
Egypt 2-0 Algeria (95th-minute winner sends this one to a play-off; in UEFA this would have been a win for Egypt on away goals, but FIFA don't use this rule, meaning that they have to clash again. Hopefully a little more peaceful off the pitch this time.)
Rwanda 0-0 Zambia

Code:
Egypt 6 4 1 1 9-4 13 WC, ANC
Algeria 6 4 1 1 9-4 13 ANC
Zambia 6 1 2 3 2-5 5 ANC
Rwanda 6 0 2 4 1-8 2 E
Group D

Sudan 1-2 Benin
Ghana 0-1 Mali (already settled; Mali take second on the back of this strong result.)

Code:
Ghana 6 4 0 2 8-3 12 WC, ACN
Mali 6 3 2 1 8-6 11 ACN
Benin 6 3 1 2 6-6 10 ACN
Sudan 6 0 1 5 2-9 1 E
Group E
Burkina Faso 1-0 Malawi (despite losing, Malawi make their first appearance at the Africa Cup of Nations since 1984. On paper the weakest team there, the nucleus of the team is in South African clubs, with a smattering in European second-tier clubs too.)
Ivory Coast 3-0 Guinea (and another couple of big wins for West Africa. Guinea, who have been in the quarter-finals of the African championship three times in a row, now fail to qualify. City, Hull happy.)

Code:
Ivory Coast 6 5 1 0 19-4 16 WC, ACN
Burkina Faso 6 4 0 2 10-11 12 ACN
Malawi 6 1 1 4 4-11 4 ACN
Guinea 6 1 0 5 7-14 3 E

Host: South Africa
Asia 1: Australia
Asia 2: Japan
Asia 3: South Korea
Asia 4: North Korea
Asia/Oceania: New Zealand
Africa 1: Cameroon
Africa 2: Nigeria
Africa 4: Ghana
Africa 5: Ivory Coast
Europe 1: Denmark
Europe 2: Switzerland
Europe 3: Slovakia
Europe 4: Germany
Europe 5: Spain
Europe 6: England
Europe 7: Serbia
Europe 8: Italy
Europe 9: Netherlands
South America 1: Brazil
South America 2: Paraguay
South America 3: Chile
South America 4: Argentina
CONCACAF 1: United States
CONCACAF 2: Mexico
CONCACAF 3: Honduras

Africa 3: Algeria or Egypt
Europe play-off 1: Russia or Slovenia
Europe play-off 2: Republic of Ireland or France
Europe play-off 3: Greece or Ukraine
Europe play-off 4: Portugal or Bosnia and Hercegovina
CONMEBOL/CONCACAF: Costa Rica vs Uruguay

The eight seeds are likely to be South Africa, Brazil, Germany, Italy, Spain, England, Argentina, France (if they qualify, otherwise Portugal, otherwise Netherlands).

That leaves one pot of the other eight European teams. With the Uruguay lead, it appears unlikely that Australia and New Zealand can draw each other, and South Africa will be required to beat either South American or European opposition to make the second round.

Not quite giving up hope of Ireland making it here. I'd sooner back a Republic of Ireland team to do something spectacular and memorable than complete a straightforward task.

Was no surprise that there was plenty of chat about the game at work today. What annoyed me about it though was the number of people saying something along the lines of, "Oh, it would have been good to go". Well, no **** - I tried to get you lot to come, and you didn't, so suck it up, muppets.

Anyway, here's a few photos from the game and the victory parade on Sunday:

Looking at the pots on the site Sam links to, the yarps being a top seed really skews the draw. Based on this:

Pot 1 (seeded teams): Argentina, Brazil, England, France, Germany, Italy, South Africa, Spain
Pot 2 (rest of UEFA): Denmark, Greece, Netherlands, Portugal, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Switzerland
Pot 3 (AFC + OFC + CONCACAF): Australia, Honduras, Japan, Korea DPR, Korea Republic, Mexico, New Zealand, USA
Pot 4 (CAF + rest of CONMEBOL): Cameroon, Chile, Côte d'Ivoire, Egypt, Ghana, Nigeria, Paraguay, Uruguay

We could end up with a creamy group like:

SA, Slovakia, New Zealand, Egypt

Or, in time honoured tradition, a Group of Death:

Spain, Netherlands, Mexico, Paraguay
