*Official* Compaq Cup 2009 in Sri Lanka

I can see anyone winning it.

I'm sure they will try their best.
:laugh:

This blackcaps side looks so much better with Shane Bond in it. Weve allways had bowlers who put their guts into it and keep a decent line and length without being devastating. Now Mills, Butler & co just need to keep it tight and build pressure for Bond to take wickets. Should be a competitive little series, really still think Scotty Styris should be in that middle order but Ive got faith in the guys there.

Batting second might not be too much of a disadvantage at the Premadasa Stadium these days. It's been raining quite a bit during the evenings, so duckworth-lewis might come into play.

I see the weather forecast is predicting thunderstorms & 80% chance of rain once again.

In fact every time I've checked the forecast in this series its been exactly the same and I mean exactly (chance of rain between 70-80% & thunderstorms) despite the fact that we've actually lost very little play to date.

Is it ever sunny is Colombo?

lol, it's the inter-monsoon period.

It's been raining at about 4 or 5pm almost everyday, lately... maybe it would've been better to host the matches in Dambulla. Too late now, anyway.

Good thing is, the rain hasn't lasted for more than an hour or so... at least in my area.

Ideal for Duckworth & Lewis to come to play in Colombo

More on the awesome Compaq trophy :happy:

I am fascinated TBH.

The innovative silverware on offer in the Tri-Series between Sri Lanka, India and New Zealand also features a permanent highlights reel for the victor.

Match-winning moments for the triumphant squad, key statistics, photographs and fan messages will be uploaded once the winner has been determined so the holder will be able to revisit memories of their success.
Despite what Pratters may say it will make a nice addition* to NZ's trophy cabinet.

* ok... only trophy... fine.

Only chance New Zealand have at this tournament is through luck of the rain gods. Else I don't see them winning this tournament. :p
:oops::no:

We have some good all-round talent in the team ATM...So, tipping for NZ win here strongly with no second thought

From an Indian point of view, both New Zealand and Sri Lanka are well-balanced. Sri Lanka can field a team that can bat all the way down to ten, but still viable. They, however, are struggling with their top six batsmen, and seem too heavily dependent on Sanath, Mahela and Dilshan, and when they're struggling, the team is affected. The others don't contribute too much. The bowling depends a lot on Malinga and Murali (if he plays) but they'll get good support from the other three. They've under-performed on the field, but are a lot better. How far they go will depend on how many runs they put together- they need it.

New Zealand also bat very deep, but their batting, man for man, doesn't pose much of a threat. They're inconsistent and would struggle to consistently put up big scores. Their main strength is in numbers- they add up to something substantial for their bowlers to defend, or can chase low totals set up by their bowlers. Their bowling will depend greatly on Bond and Vettori, less so Butler, but the other two (or three) bowlers can keep it tight. Their fielding is razor-sharp, but their bowling hasn't been tested by a superior batting side.

Ummm....what the hell? Virtually every International they play barring Bang & Zim their bowlers face superior batting...no clue what you mean by this. It was only 6-7 months ago they (minus Bond) were tested against the Indian batting lineup.

Hope for a New Zealand vs India final :happy:
Like that VB series in Australia, in which Oz got knocked out and it was a NZ vs SA final :laugh:

Bizarre series that one. From memory NZ had the wood on Aust and won 3 games to 1, Aust had the wood on SA & won 3-1 & SA on NZ by the same margin.

What can India do? They easily have the best batting lineup among the three, but their bowling lacks individual strike power. Their other problem is the nearly total lack of balance- their bowlers are struggling to get even ten runs each, their batsmen won't last seven overs match after match and their batting is also affected by bowling workload. Moreover, their ODI specialists have been found wanting against strike bowlers. They have to reshuffle their team a little and optimise their resources to win. Then again, this one-round series may be treated as a mere workout for the Champions' Trophy.

Dravid is the best player with Sachin to face the pacers, so he bats at three, obviously. Gambhir and Tendulkar are good batsmen, but need to improve as a pair, and build partnerships. Singles will be the key here in Sri Lanka. Raina struggles against express pace or even close to it, but is good against spin. He comes in at six. Yusuf Pathan is hardly used as a batsman and is under-rated as a spinner; he can play the role of a full fifth bowler here, though Dhoni doesn't rate him highly and favours his overworked top six over him. They'll also need runs from Harbhajan and Praveen as well on the sticky SL pitches, and may have to use Nayar's bowling to full effect. They'll have to bench Mishra and possibly RP Singh in this series, as they won't get much to do here.

The bottom five should be Yusuf, Nayar, Harbhajan, Praveen and Ishant. To strengthen the bowling a little, they can get in Nehra or RP Singh for Nayar. They may pick RP Singh as he's a better fielder, and the Indians are carrying some weaknesses on the field.
