IPL criticisms

Oh christ, the tournament ends 5 days for the T20 WC *facepalm*. Will the real ICC please stand uppp
And what exactly is the problem with that?

At least it may mean we see players used to the format before the World Cup.

Modi sees the dollar signs and removes one of the fundamental principles of non-US sport, namely that in a league everyone should play each other the same amount of times. I'd prefer 14 games apiece, but 21 would be preferable to 18.

I'm not too fussed that it means they won't finish until 5 days before the World T20. It's not ideal but at least we won't have to put up with the rounds of warm-up matches that, by pitting teams likely to hit each other at some point in the tournament against each other before it has begun, kind of takes the gloss of some of the big clashes.

What is even more of a scandal is that there is a World T20 just 10 months after the last one finished. Even more shameless money-grabbing...

Interesting IPL clashes with aussie season, last pura cup round and pura final, don't see any states releasing players for this, and s africa play their domestic cricket to early april,IPL will go into freefall i would suggest.
IPL need NOCs',despite what the player wants.IPL in a bind, also with international clashes too.
This IPL will be a flop.

Wishful thinking. All the Internationals will prefer the IPL to domestic games.

Nope, with the NOC thing they have no choice now. It's already been said to NZ domestic players that if they have a domestic contract they can't play in the IPL if it ever gets in the way of our cricket.

So...you'd prefer to play for ND rather than the sham that is the IPL, even though you'd be passing up big money?

Our cricket primarily refers to International cricket. There is no way the Boards are going to bar Internationals like McCullum, Oram etc from playing IPL if it is at the cost of domestic cricket.

No new teams on the way next year, but an increase to 90 matches (with three extra franchises) the year after. There's going to be a huge block of every year taken up with IPL/champions league. I do like it, but not that much. :(

Agree here, I have been defending the IPL in the past, but 90 matches is simply not on.

IPL organisers expand tournament in 2010

Bad news from my perspective (casual fan). Already too many games as it is.
Doesn't surprise me one bit though, IPL is business venture and making money is the prime objective here, and more games they have, the more money they would make, and its also a matter of time before the IPL starts overshadowing international cricket, because this is where all the big bucks are, and international cricket would soon start losing both big players and sponsors, and if ICC soon doesn't find a way to co-exist with leagues like the IPL, then its very existence could be threatened.

I can see authorities soon emulating soccer and following a similar scheduling pattern, where league cricket would be more prominent and international cricket might take the backseat.

As you say, its definitely a bad news for fans like you and me who still love quality test cricket over any other form of the game, but unfortunately people like us are a minority, and ICC or any of the more influential boards aren't going to cater to our needs.

Though the only good thing to come out of this is, all this T20 cricket that is likely to be played in the upcoming few years, could lead to the over-kill of the format, and hence quality formats of the game like ODI and test cricket might make stronger comebacks.

There just isn't an overkill of T20s in cricket. It has been an overkill of international cricket itself in the later half of the decade. Maybe there will once again be more anticipation for international matches if the number of international games played are brought down.

I can see modi borkering a deal with cricket s africa and cricket australia they have a deal with modi, but what state will release a player if their state is in line for the sheffield shield final.Think it would only happen if the team is out of contentio, and considering victi\oria is likely to make the shield final again, don't see many of their IPL players playing to the shield final is over, same as NSW.
If ld don't do well ,well then crlseldine could be released, but they made the shield final last year.
S africa have their domestic 20/20 comp in march/april and with the world club championships on offer, don't see them releasing their players or them getting nocs'.
NZ have no agreement with ipl, majority of ipl players bar scott styris are internationals, aust nz series on and so will chappell hadlee trophy be on according to cricket australia.
The timing of this IPL is silly couldn''t they have had it at a better time.

Nah... the number of ODI' and tests that have been played in the last decade would be nothing in comparison to the number of T20's that are likely to be played in the next few years, the problem is too much of the same thing would eventually bore people.

Atm.. its a novel concept, and it has been able to grab people' attention, but compared to the other formats, T20 cricket lacks in quality, and the more it is played, the more obvious it would start to become.

Can't we plant fraud evidence or something on the IPL? Make it look like they did a Stanford?

This may be a bit of an extreme reaction and I doubt the ICC give a toss what I think, but personally if IPL ends up going for six months of the year ( I bet they'll try) and players choose 20/20 over test cricket, I won't be watching. I have better things to do than watch some soulless whore of a franchise play an elaborate game of hit it for six. What a boring sport that would be.

At least a week to 10 days minimum to 2 weeks minimum between tournaments, regardless of the short nature. Especially if all the best players from each side are going to participate in it, thats crazy player burnout.

The situation IND had going in the T20 WC this year was terrible.
