Yeah this is my thoughts, if they were to play a diamond with any sort of width their defence would be really exposed. Essien is a good ball winner with a lot of bite and drive and tenacity. But he is at his best when given the freedom to roam up the pitch. In a diamond he wouldn't have the freedom to do this without horribly exposing the defence, Mikel would be the best option in their team for this role, but that raises the question of how they could fit Deco, Lampard, Zhirkov and Ballack into the rest of the team, and potentially Pirlo as well. They have enough creative and attack minded players in midfield to mean that they could easily get away with playing one striker up front alone, and Drogba and Anelka are easily good enough to do this job. In fact come to think of it, a diamond in midfield and two up front is one of the most illogical formations for Chelsea I could think of, but then again, what do I know.

Where do you play them? Assuming Essien plays the bottom of the diamond and Lampard at the head, do you play Pirlo left or right? Doesn't really fit there at all. I suppose you could shove Essien onto one of the wings and play Pirlo deep, but that leaves an increasingly slow Terry and Carvahlo pretty exposed as Pirlo is rubbish defensively.

They wouldn't really play any wingers, four CMs. The full-backs are expected to provide the width in that formation.

Never been a fan of it myself, AC Milan have made it work at times over the years though.

Well, he still has to pass the medical. If our staff are happy and Rafa is happy I trust him to sign Aquilani despite his problems.

He's extremely talented but I think he could turn out to be the new Kewell/Rosicky as opposed to the new Totti (which I've read quite a lot). When he's on, he's great to watch.

And The Sun (I know, I know) is rather boldly claiming that Citeh will get Lescott today for £22m + add ons.
