Yeh I was expecting a lot more of Setu, Dragons fans were spewing he left, hes given us deadset nothing. Te'o was always potentially going to be a great or a poor signing, hes turning out to be a shocker. Wapau is pathetic he isnt NRL standard.

I'll let Copley off the hook because hes 17, otherwise he'd be copping it.

Yeah I was spewing when he first left but now I don't really mind after seeing our juniors coming through and seeing how much he has failed to impress in Queensland.

That was great. As someone who only got into footy in the last 10 or so years the rules were a bit hard to follow but it was certainly a more savage game. Easy to see why Gould is always complaining about how soft the game is now.

When Radonikous and the Parra player were punching on the commentator was saying how the referee should stay out of it and let them sort it out. Compare that to now with Gould complaining about refs getting involved after (shock horror) heavy tackles.

Ausage I'm offended. "The commentator?" "The Commentator?" It's Rex Mossop mate - the Moose, legend that he is and always will be. King of tautology - "It's deja vu all over again", "They've decimated, dissected and absolutely diabolicially destroyed this Great Britain side today"; "He is running sideways across the field, without making forward progress"; "Nobody should have to put up with having genitalia rammed down their throat" [after making a citizen's arrest of a nude bather near his home] are just some of the great man's pearls of wisdom.

The thing that always gets me when I watch old games like that is the lack of panic if someone got caught on the 6th, or lack of a worry if someone knocked on because there was a chance you'd get the ball back from a scrum anyway. I'm not an advocate for fully contested scrums, but you should be able to push the opposing pack off the ball IMO. MG on the radio the other night was saying that when he came into grade, you'd go into scrums and know you would get tired. These days they're just a pit stop for tired forwards.

Also, the depth of the back lines in attack was a sight to behold.

As an aside, I was at that game, sitting with my grandparents right next to the Bob Stand on the Hill. My abiding memory was how windy it was that day - we were right near a light tower and you could see the tower swaying back and forth pretty violently in the wind. After the game, IIRC the SCG trust lopped a few metres off the towers as there was a thought they might topple over.

Also, when the Parra players ran on the field, they each kicked a ball into the crowd. Sterlo kicked his in our direction, it bounced up off the path leading into the Bob Stand, headed towards us, got tapped on by a few people and my grandmother, of all people, flew high above the pack and grabbed it. We went into Westfields Parra the next week and had it signed by the entire team. I still have it at home.

Great times the 80s for Parra fans. Now we're completely ****house in every material aspect of the game.

Ha. Lucky I didn't go with my original question which was, "Is that Roy Masters commentating?"

But lol at those quotes

The game struck me as very similar to Union (although I could be best described as a layman when it comes to Union). It didn't move from end to end as quickly, there were 2 different types of penalties and as you say kicking for touch wasn't just gifting possession to your opponent. There were even those midfield bombs going up that you see in Union every couple of minutes. Sterling tried a chip kick midway through a set in his own half, a halfback would be crucified for doing that nowadays.

Possession and field position are much much more important now, which means players are more likely to play conservative for fear of giving it up. It also means the referees are much more important in the context of a match as they have a huge amount of power to influence such things. It's easy to see why referees are viewed in such an emotive nature these days.

I'll likely get howled down for this, but I've always wondered why a penalty needs to reset the tackle count. Giving both field position and often an extra set of possession for at times minor infringements is a massive advantage and it's all in the hands of a referee. Maybe we need a 2 types of penalty system like Union, where the more serious offenses reset the tackle count, and less serious offenses merely allow you to kick for touch and get the ball back. Minor infringements would therefore only grant you 30 or so meters of field position.

Apparently there are a number of Qld players who've been struck down with gstro.

Appropriate, coz they've been giving me the ****s for the past 3.5 series.

Qld by 90 tonight.

Broncos are gash, but so are the Eels and brisbane is due a decent performance, so I pick them. Bulldogs v Cowboys is a toughie.

Darren Lockyer is thinking about declaring when the score gets to 60.

I see a lot of you guys are backing the Bulldogs to win this week, I can't see it happening tbh. Morris might not back up because playing three games in seven days is extremly hard, Hannant would of had a hard game two nights before and our bench looks piss-weak.

And my prediction for tonight:

QLD 32
NSW 14

Nah I'll have the Dogs this week. At worst they'll lose a forward and a centre (and I have my doubts on how much Morris will play tonight), while the Cowboys have a forward, centre and their halfback/best player/offensive linchpin playing. Thurston is far more important to the Cowboys than Hannant or Morris are to the Dogs, and therefore Origin is more likely to swing the odds towards the Dogs than away from them.

Not a foregone conclusion obviously like any game in the NRL.

BTW Craig you tipped both the Roosters and the Sharks.
