Question for the technically-minded: considering we're getting to the stage where a lot of guys have played eighteen tournaments, is there an Excel formula that could help me out in counting the best 18 of someone? Or, even better, all the Masters Series and Grand Slam events they participated in/had a ranking high enough for, and then the next best five or whatever it is?

Question for the technically-minded: considering we're getting to the stage where a lot of guys have played eighteen tournaments, is there an Excel formula that could help me out in counting the best 18 of someone? Or, even better, all the Masters Series and Grand Slam events they participated in/had a ranking high enough for, and then the next best five or whatever it is?
There's a function in Excel called large(range, rank) which will give you the 2nd highest in a data set, say.

So if you listed the results as

columns A-D: slams
columns E-M: masters
then there's 52 weeks for other tournaments, so N-BM.

If you now leave blank those tournaments where the player didn't have a high enough rank, but write 0 where the player could have participated and was injured/chose not to, 18 - count(a1:m1) will give you the number of tournaments from the N:BM range to count. Place that formula in column BN.

Then in column BO
if(column(bo1)-column($bn1)>$bn1,0,large($n1:$bm1,column(bo1)-column($bn1)))

copy this formula across (with Excel's copy, which changes the reference for you - hence the dollar signs, they keep the reference to bn constant) till you reach column CF. If BN1 now reads 10, that is, the player could have played in 10 tournaments, BO1 will display the best result, BP1 the second best, etc., but the if test ensures that only eight are listed. Finally, writing sum(bo1:cf1) + sum(a1:m1) will give the total ranking points.

Excellent result for Mustard in the singles, but will not want to give up a set against Charles. Disappointed Mustard couldn't back it up in the doubles with Heath. Hopefully Mustard can get some revenge against Charles in the singles.

German Hamburg Open
Semifinals - Hamburg

Men's Singles (Seeds & Other Entrants - Seeds - Finals - Section 1 - Section 2 - Section 3 - Section 4)
Men's Doubles (Draw)

  • World number two Jason Hall is one win from claiming his second clay court title after his dominant run continued in Hamburg with a straight sets thrashing of exciting Jamaican Oneil Stewart. The top seed would have considered this contest a danger match, but quickly found himself cruising at 4-1 in the opening set. Whilst Stewart managed to add some respectability to the first set score, it didn't last as Hall ran through the second set in just half an hour to embarass the Munich finalist with an easy win. (Hall d. Stewart, 6-2 6-0)
  • Hall will meet fellow American Dwayne Murdoch in the final after the French Open semifinalist upset world number four Radivoj Daneu in straight sets. The world's number fourteen has dropped just one set this week, and looks in prime position to cause the top seed trouble on Sunday after beating the former world number two. In his second semifinal in as many weeks, the Serbian again failed to produce the goods as he was broken early in both sets by the American number three. (Murdoch d. Daneu, 6-4 6-4)

  • Seeded players out: Radivoj Daneu.
  • Hungarian brothers Janos and Zoltan Varga have been able to make up for their respectively disappointing singles tournaments by securing a spot in the final of the doubles draw in their first tournament since the French Open. The brothers continued their unbroken streak of sets against second seeds Ion Andueza and Sanchez Emelio who failed to repeat their victory from last week in Stuttgart; the Hungarian duo looked the more confident side at cruicial moments in what turned out to be a hotly contested showdown. (Varga / Varga d. Andueza / Emelio)
  • Wimbledon champs Sandro Bachunelli and Hicham Hadir will attempt to return back near the top of the doubles rankings and secure a spot at the end of year Masters Series Finals after they easily disposed of Brazilian duo Marzio Claverini and Flavio Augusto Martins. The top seeds escaped with a victory in the quarterfinals, and were keen not to repeat the close miss here as they surged to a comfortable victory and into a final they will no doubt be favourites for. (Bachunelli / Hadir d. Claverini / Martins, 6-1 6-4)

    • Seeded teams out: Ion Andueza / Sanchez Emelio.
Indianapolis Tennis Championships
Semifinals - Indianapolis

Men's Singles (Seeds & Other Entrants - Seeds - Finals - Top Half - Bottom Half)
Men's Doubles (Draw)

  • CWLand's Jojo Mustard will compete in his maiden ATP level final this Sunday after emerging from his semifinal clash with Henry Charles unscathed; producing a sensational victory to avenge his doubles loss the day before. Mustard came into the match as rank underdog despite having defeat world number five Darcy Cowan in the second round, and looked troubled early by the man who was fresh off a confidence boosting win over the world number one. But it was not to be for Charles as a 3-0 lead was wittled away by Mustard who, as he has done all week, fought hard to avoid defeat. Clinching the first set with some confident serve-and-volley tennis, a jubilant Mustard started the second set full of confidence and quickly escaped to lead 4-0. Whilst Charles managed to steal a break back against the Mustard serve, he could not claw back the massive deficit as the world number 31 started his warm up to the CW Open with a straight sets win. (Mustard d. Charles, 6-4 6-3)
  • It was a day of shocks as tournament favourite Radek Spidla bombed out in the second semifinal to local hope Morgan Carter - the Czech giant becoming the last of the seeded players to fall. Spidla looked like continuing his imposing form by taking the first set comfortably, before the hard-working Carter surged back into contention by claiming the second set. A stunned Spidla became more resolute in his game, but never looked like coming back from the brink in the deciding set and suffered an exit just before what would have been a winnable final. (Carter d. Špidlá, 4-6 6-3 6-3)\

  • Seeded players out: Henry Charles; Radek Špidlá.
  • It was a joyous day for Morgan Carter as he and partner Wayne Boyd advanced to a maiden ATP doubles final with a straight sets thrashing of Henry Charles and Jordan Mutch. After winning his singles semifinal, Carter chose to continue on in the doubles draw with a view to snatching a Davis Cup spot alongside Boyd for the tie against Serbia in September. The British pair seemed to have used up all their aces in Friday's quarterfinal against the second seeds, and a dispirited Charles looked laconic as the Americans advanced comfortably. (Boyd / Carter d. Charles / Mutch, 6-3 6-1)
  • It will be an all-American final in what could very well be a battle for the Davis Cup doubles spot as French Open champs Hugh James and Ralph Robinson prevailed in a tight two-setter against Julian Day and veteran Jean-Alain Depuis. The former world number one duo looked the cleaner of the two sides as Day and Depuis struggled on service against the consistent Americans. After an easy first set, the top seeds were tested more thoroughly in the second as Day and Depuis came hard. But Julian Day's service could not hold up in what turned out to be the final game of the match as James and Robinson advanced to their second final in as many weeks. (James / Robinson d. Day / Depuis, 6-3 7-5)

  • Seeded teams out: Julian Day / Jean-Alain Depuis.
Penza Cup
Semifinals - Penza

Men's Singles (Finals - Top Half - Bottom Half)
Men's Doubles (Draw)

The impressive run of qualifier Joseph Tessier came to a screeching halt in the semifinals of the Penza Cup in Russia as he crashed out within an hour against Chile's Jefferson Quezada. Quezada, who will play in his second Challenger level final tomorrow, looked easily the more classy player as the Frenchman's giant-killing run ended 6-2 6-1 in a clinical display lasting just fifty-eight minutes. The Chilean now faces second seed Li Ming-Wang in Sunday's final after the Chinese number three escaped with a tight 7-6(3) 4-6 6-2 win in the second semifinal against Victor Zsasz of Switzerland. In the doubles final it will be an all-Russian affair with second seeds Grigor Khugaev and Alexey Korskakov coming in as favourites against Nikolai Ryzhikov and Evgeniy Volkoff. Khugaev and Korskakov prevailed in the match of the day against French duo Tanguy Boissel and Felix Nason in a three-set thriller, 6-4 6-7(2) [10-4].

So Mustard becomes the sixth in an illustrious line of CWLanders to make an ATP level final, and has arguably (outside of Oxenstierna) had the biggest field to make it through. Very winnable final against Carter, too.

Meanwhile Hakon, that's absolutely awesome. :) I'll try get that working tonight.

Good win for Mustard. It was worth staying behind to watch. Should be surging up the rankings after that. Sadly, I'm probably sliding down the rankings.

  • Jason Hall could be back on top of the ATP World Rankings as early as next week in Los Angeles after securing a straight sets victory in the final of the German Hamburg Open over World No. 14 Dwayne Murdoch. Hall was tested by his fellow American for the first time this week as he was tested in the first set by a determined Murdoch. But the French Open semifinalist could not take Hall to his first tiebreaker in Germany as Hall snatched the set despite being matched for most of it by his compatriot. After the break between sets, the second seed came out in sensational touch as he broke the seventh seed's service in the very first game. Continuing his brilliant second set form which has seen him drop just eight games in his five sets this week, Hall secured his second title on clay with a comfortable win. (
    Hall d.
    Murdoch, 7-5 6-3)

  • Seeded players out: Dwayne Murdoch.
  • Hungarian duo Janos and Zoltan Varga have claimed their first doubles title of the season with a three-set epic victory over Wimbledon champs Sandro Bachunelli and Hicham Hadir. Much like Hall, the Vargas had yet to drop a set all week but found themselves in trouble at 3-5 in the first set. But the Hungarian duo managed to scrape back into the contest and secure the first set tiebreaker to edge ahead of their more fancied opponents. But that momentum was cut short by the Italian-Moroccan duo who comfortably took the second set and headed into the decider looking the better side. But in their first tournament since the French Open, the Hungarians kept their Year End Finals hopes alive with a tight win in a lengthy match tiebreaker. (Varga / Varga d. Bachunelli / Hadir, 7-6(5) 2-6 [12-10])

  • The tables were turned on Jojo Mustard in the final of the Indianapolis Tennis Championships in Indiania as he gave up a one-set lead to slump to a disappointing defeat to local hope Morgan Carter. In the final nobody expected, the crowd were firmly behind Carter who was looking for the Indianapolis title to add to his collection alongside Sydney. But they were frustrated early as the finals debutant snared a break of service in the fifth game of the opening set to surge to a 4-2 lead. But after dropping the first set, Carter came out firing in the second set and handed Mustard his second bagel of the week in a dominant performance. But, as we've come to expect this week, Mustard was not about to lay over and die and matched it with the dogged American. Carter, though, would have enough to steal a late break of service after several opportunities to lift his second title of the season. (
    Carter d.
    Mustard, 4-6 6-0 7-5)

  • Seeded players out: None.
  • He was not, however, able to complete the double later in the day alongside Wayne Boyd as the third seeds fell to a three-set defeat against Hugh James and Ralph Robinson. In a complete reverse of the singles final, Boyd and Carter were able to take the first set after the normally dangerous serve of Robinson was met by some confident returning from the highly rated singles pairing. But in an amazing repeat of the singles draw, Carter and his partner were bagelled in the second set following some more cohesive tennis from the favourites who seemed to be quickly closing in on a second career title. There seemed to be a slight chance of there being a twist in the tale as Carter and Boyd edged ahead 3-1 in the match tiebreaker, but they were comprehensively chased down by the top seeds who returned to the top of the world rankings with a first hard court title. (James / Robinson d. Boyd / Carter, 4-6 6-0 [10-5])

  • Seeded teams out: Wayne Boyd / Morgan Carter.

Chile's Jefferson Quezada has claimed his first Challenger level title after a straight sets thrashing of Chinese favourite Li Ming-Wang. After losing his final in Reggio Emilia to up-and-comer Marc Carretero, Quezada was keen to atone for his loss and managed to do so in style after overcoming the early nerves of being 1-4 down in the first set; rallying to take the set 7-5. From there it was a formality as the Chinese veteran crumbled under the Chilean's confidence as Quezada secured his place inside the world's top 100. (
Quezada d.
Li, 7-5 6-1) In the double's final, second seeds Gregor Korskakov and Alexey Yarkin prevailed in an entertaining affair on centre court against fellow Russians Nikolai Ryzhikov and Evgeniy Volkoff. (Koskakov / Yarkin d. Ryzhikov / Volkoff, 6-4 3-6 [10-7])

  • Seeded players out: Li Ming-Wang.

After a quarterfinal exit at the Penza Cup, CWLand's Spas Delev has been further hit by news that he will miss this week's Countrywide Classic in Los Angeles. The World No. 111 qualified sixteenth in a shallow draw, but was forced to withdraw after suffering a fractured finger. The CWLander was drawn against Brit Oscar Highsmith in the first round - a man he lost to just a month ago in Newport. He will be replaced by one of the tournament's alternates.
