Villa’s Martin Laursen has been forced to retire at the tender age of 31.

He really did do well to last that long, even at the 2002 World Cup, he was criminally slow. I remember him getting absolutely terrorised by Michael Owen in that very game but despite his lack of pace, he made a very good career for himself.

Wilfred Bouma is another Villa player who has to be careful. His only 30 but his had three serious injuries too many. Real shame as he should have had a far better career.

Was a good defender, Laursen; Villa's season can basically be divided into "with Laursen" and "sans Laursen". They were looking good for the CL with him but have tanked spectacularly without him. Always depressing when a sportsman younger than me retires too.

Funny you mention Owen as well, said on BBC today Shearer was been forced to deny young Michael is knocking it on the head at the end of the season. How the mighty have fallen. Bet Mickey's wishing he'd taken that £80k a week Newcastle offered in January now. :closedeye

Read about him in the 'Season with Verona' book and gained a soft spoto for him and have looked out for him ever since. Spoke of how hard it was for him to adjust to life in Italy as a young player. After that season he ended up at Parma (IIRC) and then at AC Milan.

Raised a slight chuckle or 3. This was my favourite though

"Do you think spending is cheating?"
He had a rather spiteful Q&A session with the shareholders and a lot of the questions revolved around his expenditure, one bloke even asked him why he let Senderos go only to replace him with a geriatric like Silvestre (haha). His response was something along the lines of "If I have 5 million I'll spend 5 million, if I have 10 million I'll spend 10 million. I have nothing against spending."

Which is ridiculously worrying because we've made a profit during transfer windows over the last 4 years since moving to Ashburton Grove. That is, if the implication that he really is spending to the limit is to be taken at face value then the collapse of the property market has possibly screwed us over royally.

What some fans will point to is statements from Fiszman, Edelman, and Hill-Wood that money is plentiful but the cynic in me thinks that this could be spin to keep the sharks (Usmanov and Dein) at bay and not create some sort of public encouragement for them to try and launch a takeover that the fans will be behind.

The new CEO Ivan Gazidis has been talking big game about us recently with all the criticism Arsene has been getting, the summer will see if we can walk the walk.

18 titles for the dirty mancs now, fair one, imagine Ferguson will want one more before he finishes up

If the Toon lose they still will be outside the bottom 3 due to goal difference.

Hopefully Fergie plays his U15 side against Hull. Maybe they can get a point.

Boro got West Ham last game and if the results stay as you were, they would have nothing to play for.

And you never know WBA could turn over Liverpool tomorrow, they have nothing to play for and Rovers don't as well. BA's last game of the season.
