IPL to be played outside India

Cricinfo staff

March 22, 2009

The second season of the Indian Premier League will not be held in India. At the BCCI working commitee meeting today in Mumbai, a decison is believed to have arrived at, to stage the tournament outside the country, due to extraordinary circumstances.

England and South Africa have emerged as the frontrunners to host the event. "All 59 games will begin at 4:00 pm IST and the second game will begin at 8:00 pm IST as per schedule," said Lalit Modi, the IPL chairman. He also said there will be no changes made to the format or the schedule. An official announcement was expected soon.

Their TV revenues may stay the same but it will be a disaster from getting crowds to the grounds pov.

Think they will get decent crowds in both England and RSA. T20 is hugely popular in both places and England get regular packed houses for the domestic games back there. IPL has internaional players to look forward to apart from the Indian guys and a fair few ppl will come to watch a good cricket game.

Guess it would be great to watch the stars play in Jo'burg where it will be a batsman's paradise. And I have always felt that Saffer cheerleaders are hotter.;)

England the right place for profile and revenue.

South Africa will be easier to achieve politically.

This will be a tough year for IPL. It is a criticised start-up and had a promising first year but the 2nd and the 3rd seasons are so important in building a foundation.

Usually in domestic games crowds come to support their local franchises. I don't think anyone will have any emotional connection with any of the teams so don't think there would be big crowds bar games where popular english blokes are playing and that too I doubt very much.

think revenue from crowds wont hit IPL any way as they are very minimal as half the tickets in inda is always given away as complimentory passes

and if they still want good crowd ..i would think BCCI can change the 4 oversea's player restiction and allow the board which is going to host IPL allow 2-3 players from their country..may be there wont be much time for that still

So will the South African/English players still be considered an overseas player?

Crowds get the most beautiful gals in the cricket too in the entire world. As for the RSA cheerleaders, watched them on the ground during the semi and final of T20 world cup India matches. So good.

Very surprised the whole tournament is shifting lock, stock & barrel. There's a case to skip some venues from what I've seen in the English media, but the whole dealy? Bit of a shock.

I don't think there will be a problem with a fair few crowds due to no local teams at England because of how popular T20 is back there. RSA may not be that hot a venue but you never know. This is T20. Got packed houses in Pakistan for local domestic games.

if its money what matters then second edition is already a bigger hit than first

It should be fairly well supported in SA, but only by the Indian community I imagine, ask most fans here about the IPL and you get blanked.. And quite right too, the whole thing is a circus and a farce
