I nearly went Tate, I had him in my Test Draft, decided to go for Trevor Goddard instead, seem like similar players really.

I've decided to keep picking bowlers starting with B, this time I've gone for Bishan Bedi who is arguably India's greatest ever spin bowler.

1 V Sehwag 2 xxxx 3 xxxx 4 D Compton 5 J Miandad 6 L Ames 7 xxxx 8 T Goddard 9 I Bishop 10 A Bedser 11 B Bedi

So for the final 3 rounds I need an opener, a decent number 3 [Bradman would be handy] and a bowling all rounder most likely, could do with just a bowler as long as he isn't a complete mug with the bat.

Me again eh. Well I suppose I'll pick Chanderpaul.

Stephen
Bob Simpson
*
Clyde Walcott
Dudley Nourse
Shivnarine Chanderpaul
*
Ian Healy
Alan Davidson
*
Andy Roberts
Anil Kumble

So I'll be needing an opener, an #6 and a bowler.

Interesting to see who the Indian fans prefer out of Kumble and Bedi.

Bedi was around 8th on by spin bowlers list while Kumble was 7th (behind Murali, Warne, O'Reilly, Grimmet, Benaud and Laker). The WIndies best ever spinner was up there, along with another finger spinner or two from the days of stickies.

But for India, it's certainly a two horse race as far as I'm concerned between Kumble and Bedi. Bedi was probably better away from home, while Kumble was better at home.

Yeah it is close Stephen. If you are just looking at bowling and not longevity or batting, I rate Bedi just ahead of Kumble.

No, he isn't :-O. He wasn't even the best spinner in his own team. Not to say he was very far behind Chandrasekhar, but IMO people get taken in by the reports of his graceful action, loop and all that bluster about how he preferred to buy his wickets rather than peg back the batsman hoping to scalp him ( should've had the best SR if that were true. Chandrasekhar has better claims to adhering to that philosophy given his lower SR and higher ER).

IMO Kumble and Chandrasekhar tie for first spot. Kumble was God at home, while Chandrasekhar was better overseas. Besides, Chandrasekhar bowled with a polio stricken arm, all the more credit to him. From all reports, he couldn't keep his arm raised for anymore than the effort it took him to deliver the ball.

Damn you.
Was considering picking him ages ago as a specialist middle order bat. But then I looked a bit more closely at his record and Walcott, Nourse and Chanderpaul had better claims IMO. Also picking him as a specialist bat would have been funny for all the pain it would cause people who hadn't got a keeper in their team yet :p.

Matt could you just confirm how rounds 9-11 will work in terms of how players can be accepted? It might have an influence on how I make my pick in round 8.

Personally think Flower is better then Chanderpaul as a specialist batsmen. Though there not a great deal of difference. I actually don't think I will get him anyway.

I think you'll get him, unless one of my picks didn't make the cut.

Chanderpaul is an extremely underrated batsman. He averages over 41 against every nation including Australia, has a very solid overall average and has made piles and piles of runs for many years. In the last few years he's been ridiculously good.

Flower didn't get to play gainst Australia enough to see how good he was against them. He was average versus NZ and below average vs SL. He was terrible in the tests he played against England and Aus.

Chanderpaul as a batsman has a much more complete record.

Flower is a great pick if you need a keeper though, but purely on batting acheivements Flowers average flattered his accomplishments.

TBF your only as good as the chances you are given. He hardly played against Australia and England, to really judge his performances against them. Whereas Chanderpaul played heaps against those sides and it was his later performances against Australia that increased his average.

Apart from Sri Lanka, all the sides that he played five plus Tests against he averaged over 40 himself. Even with Sri Lanka it was 38 and there were some crazy turners.

Also Chanderpaul played 4 Test matches series against those sides. So if you have a couple bad Tests, you can come back in the later Tests and make up for it. With two Test match series, it is all or nothing.

In say all that Chanderpaul is brillant pick at this stage of draft when you looking for a lower middle order batsmen. Apart from Border, Waugh, Lloyd and Walters I don't think there is many better 5/6 batsmen.

I think it's safe to say that we both picked the best player for our respective teams that was available :).

Flower not going to keep for us, so i could picked a better batsmen. I just wanted a backup incase I got ****ed in the last couple rounds. Looking at it again I probably should have gone for someone that could play as backup keeper and backup opener and a better middle order batsmen. Though he was more of a top order batsmen. Considering there likely to be five openers in the last round I should be ok, so a better lower middle batsmen that is a better keeper, might be the better option.
