IIRC, before the IPL bidding last yr, Ponting was all for IPL. He also spoke for having a international cricket break during IPL to allow players to play the IPL

after he was snapped up for peanuts [when compared to the price tag of other stars], he started complaining a lot about various issues .... may be a case of sour grapes

his performance in the IPL '08 was dismal. probably, he would have wondered if he would be an automatic choice for the starting 11 as one of the four overseas players

in short, it's not surprising that he has opted out
