Yes, that would make total sense. In terms of 3+1 spinner or a 4-some, do you think the 3+1 helped?
How many drawn matches did Warne turn into wins on the last day? The only player I can think of who would have done so more often is Anil Kumble.

You should have a time limit, three-four days since the start or such.
well, i had kept a seven day limit for other polls. when they were running simultaneously it was alright. now since we have only this poll going i am little restless. taking in both kallis and botham for next poll would mean i will also have to take in lillee and ambrose from the fast bowlers poll. dont want to do that (though athlai is recommending that since he doesnt want to vote for mcgrath)

will wait for 70 votes to come in

mcgrath lost selection by one vote. lillee and ambrose have got less than half of his votes. thats why i am not too keen on carrying them over and let them break mcgrath's vote bank. want to keep it straigh forward between one spinner, one pacer and one all-rounder. may be for future polls i will commit before hand to carry over two runners up from the very beginning.

guys, 1 vote has been polled in the 24 hours. wonder if i should move onto the next poll. but the problem is, the spinner's poll has got 82 votes. so potentially this poll can have a different runner up if most of the votes go to kallis or botham or chappell.

Better than Ponting:

Bradman
Hobbs
Hutton
Tendulkar
Hammond
Sobers
Lara
Gavaskar
Barrington
Chappell (10)
Richards
Weekes
Grace
Sutcliffe
Dravid
Barrington

To be fair to you hard to keep Ponting out from now, 15-30 then.
Nah, Ponting is definitely better than Dravid, and quite possibly another couple of names in there.

It's stupid to say that Ponting is worse than Grace. How on earth are you meant to compare two player who played 100 years apart? Ridiculous.

A man with that much hair on his face has got to be a better player than a man with that much hair on his fingers and arms.

ponting & 2nd best aus batsman since D Bradman.Rod marsh called it right years ago when he saw ponting bat as a teenager.he has an equally brilliant FC record. You don't ave close to 60 in FC without being very good.pontings FC record > SRT.

dont use that line or argument, mate. vijay merchant averages 12 runs more than ponting in FC cricket? Is he the second best batsman in cricket history after bradman?

also, if ponting is better than tendulkar because of his first class stats being better, is kambli better than ponting? check out their FC stats below.

VG Kambli 1989-2005 129 181 14 9965 262 59.67 35 44
RT Ponting 1992-2009 226 383 53 19488 257 59.05 71 81
SR Tendulkar 1988-2009 258 407 43 21318 248* 58.56 68 97

while judging the greatness of a player dont bring in the FC stats. they are misleading.

AFAIK, the Australian FC standard is the best in the world. Comparing them like that is a tad misleading.

instead of adding more and more qualifiers to justify a baseless argument might as well drop it and stick to test cricket.

Whether you put weighting on it or not is upto you but, frankly, his FC record is absolutely brilliant. Comparing it to Kambli or Merchant is not really that fair considering their FC standard probably wasn't as high as Ponting's.

It's even more brilliant when you minus his Test games from it (as Cricinfo counts Test games as FC records too) where he averages 62 (IIRC). It's pretty mammoth and just shows what kind of batsman he's been. It shows his Test record is simply a trend that he's continued.

I agree his FC record is brilliant. but this thread is about test cricket. it is irrelevant to bring FC records into discussion.

It's not- it's ammunition against the people who claim Ponting's test record is anomalous and would go down if he played more tests.

but it is not the right ammunition anyway, they are irrelevant and they dont prove anything. also that accusation is stupid. ponting has achieved what very few in the history has managed. if he stops playing today he would go down as one of the all-time greats. even if his average drops or goes up by a few points before he retires, his status as one of the greatest ever batsmen wont change. you dont need to bring in his FC record to bolster his case.
