US Men's Clay Court Championships
Round of 32 - Houston

CWLand third seed
Brett Read was the biggest name casualty in the first round in Houston as he lost from a set ahead against France's
Jean-Christophe Genghini. The world number 27 has been in abysmal form as of late, but looked in entertaining form in the first set as he accounted for the Frenchman easily. But after a 6-1 opening set lead, Read struggled to really get going as Genghini began to grind the CWLand grinder out of the match with a vast array of shots. A dejected Read dropped the next two sets with poor serving and positioning and would later fall victim to a scathing attack from countryman
Roy Daniels.
But Read proved to be the only disappointment for CWLand as the other five entrants all won their first round clashes. Fifth seed
Randy Smeltz easily accounted for Austrian
Zbiginiew Boniek in straight sets as he looked at home on the clay of Houston. Ahead of the Monte Carlo masters, Smeltz looks to push into the top fifty which has thus far alluded him - the world number 55 advancing to a tough second round clash against
Viktor Vuriak with a
6-2 7-5 win. In the bottom half, sixth seed
Jojo Mustard celebrated his first seeding with a win; edging past American
Samuel Thorpe in a three-set encounter. In a tougher match than Mustard would have liked, the pair traded sets to start with before he got the better of his opponent in the final set with early breaks. A
6-3 3-6 6-1 victory represented the story of the match, and Mustard will hope to continue his run as he faces Italian
Massimo Prodi in the round of 16.
Spas Delev will likely break into the top hundred following this tournament despite an unimpressive first round win over French qualifier
Bertran Renard. Delev was forced to come from behind to defeat the world number 141, and in a tight tussle Delev finally emerged victorious. In a contest which could have easily gone the other way, Delev stayed determined and on track to advance to a second round clash with second seed
Carlo Amato - but he'll have to improve on his
5-7 7-6(6) 7-5 victory. And finally,
Billy Spleen booked an interesting second round clash with
Bogdan Maurer following a come-from-behind win against Chilean
Jefferson Quezada. Quezada proved too good for the youngster in the first set, but Spleen kept at it as the two produced some tiring rallies. A couple of superb sets gave Spleen a
3-6 6-1 6-4 victory, but his game will certainly have to improve as he faces the Romanian who defeated fourth seed
Valter Cordiero in straight sets.
Seeds Out: 3-Brett Read (CWL); 4-Valter Cordiero (POR).

Round of 32 - Casablanca

Second seed
Jefferson Drake has looked to set about restoring his form, and he started on that quest well with a straight sets thumping of Sweden's
Henrik Henrikkson. Drake, who was bitterly disappointed with poor tournaments at Indian Wells and Miami, took out his frustrations on his first match on clay for the season; accounting for the Swede in just under an hour. Drake didn't drop a game in the first set against the world number 105, racing through with supreme confidence. Whilst Henrikkson put up a better fight in the second set, the enigmatic CWLander proved too strong as he advanced to a second round clash with Chinese Taipei's
Tu Haifeng with a
6-0 6-2 victory. Also successful was sixth seed
Heath Davis who proved he can play on clay with a big win over dangerous Brazilian
Carlos Machado. Machado wasn't too dangerous in the first set as he was roundly thumped 6-0, but he managed to work his way into rallies more successfully in the second set as he forced Davis to do most of the running. But Davis' killer serve gave him some crucial free points in the ensuing second set tiebreaker; Davis sealing a
6-0 7-6(4) victory and moving to a second round clash with Belgian gun
Yves Parmentier. The other successful CWLander was qualifier
Sven Svensson. Svensson, who prefers to be called by his nickname 'Sven', emerged victorious against journeyman Australian youngster
Jeremy Natale in an impressive straight sets victory. Natale, ranked 96th in the world, will be disappointed with his performance as Svensson dominated the going with an impressive all-court game on his foreign clay court surface. With incredible poise, the CWLand import sealed his first victory on the tour with a
6-4 6-2 win. It gets tougher, though, as his second round opponent,
Jean-Alain Depuis upstaged Spanish eighth seed
Sanchez Emelio in straight sets.
Jarko Maxum came in confidently to his match with top seed
Rasmus Olesen, but proved to be little more than cannon-fodder for the Dane as he warmed himself up with a
6-1 6-4 win. Despite some impressive points on his favoured clay surface, Maxum was no match for his more talented opponent and was easily accounted for by the world number nine. Elsewhere,
Adam Murray recorded his first victory on return from injury in a three-set tussle with
Rob Bowenburg. The Lob has suffered atrocious form as of late with just one win in his last four matches, and was given a tough task against the determined Australian. Despite dropping the second set, Murray looked in fine form to advance
6-3 4-6 6-2 as he looks to rejoin the world's top fifty.
Seeds Out: 4-Ross Onwye (MAR); 5-Hayden Onwye (MAR); 8-Sanchez Emelio (ESP).
Moroccan brothers disappoint on home turf
Brothers
Ross Onwye and
Hayden Onwye have disappointed the Moroccan crowd as the pair both suffered defeats in the first round of the Casablanca tournament. The fourth seed, Ross, fell to wildcard
Omar Allali in straight sets in a poor performance. In the bottom half of the draw, Hayden, seeded five, also fell in straight sets to
Gjorgi Dinov of Macedonia. It wasn't all bad news for the locals, though; the man who defeated Ross happens to be a local wildcard himself.
Daniels tears into "bog-average" Read
A rift in the CWLand camp has developed as youngster
Roy Daniels was understood to have launched a scathing attack on countryman
Brett Read. Daniels, who pulled out of the US Men's Clay Court Championships with a niggling injury, labelled Read "bog-average" following his first round defeat in Houston. In a bar post-match, an intoxicated Daniels announced to onlookers that Read was the "most overrated player in CWLand" and was also "living off one good performance". The comments from Daniels will do little to soothe Read's soul following a dreadful run of form as of late. Tournament organisers were said to be disappointed with his lacklustre performance; expecting more from the man who upset
Darcy Cowan in Memphis just over a month ago. Read has yet to comment on the outburst.
