Cricket team draft

Jakester1288

International Regular
Andrew Flintoff

I need a quick and someone to bat 6. I decided against someone else who I believe will still be there when I have my next pick.

Hmm the orginal Plan A just went. So down to plan D,E and F. Though they aren't that bad.

Wish he went for those Saffies.

Meanwhile Jakester has 11 hours left to pick the player we all know he has to take...

Fairly predictable in the end

Good pick though, I would have taken him with my final pick if no one else had. And for your team, as I mentioned, he was by far the best available pick.

I was keen to take Flintoff actually. Had been analysing the teams of everyone for the last hour or so but had a feeling that Jakester might pinch him. I will make my selection very shortly, just tossing up over a couple of players.

Jakester1288

International Regular
1. Sid Barnes
2. David Boon
3. Alvin Kallicharran
4. Brian Lara
5. Michael Hussey
6. Andrew Flintoff
7. Richard Hadlee
8. Richie Benaud
9. Ian Healy
10. Daniel Vettori
11.

Apart from Hussey, that is a pretty strong team, Hadlee leading the attack with Flintoff, Benaud and Vettori providing the spin, and hopefully another quality quick to come.

Just looking at your team, Flintoff makes an amazing difference to your set up. Suddenly, Healy or Hadlee are where they belong at 7, the other is a very strong number 8, Vettori is a remarkably good 9, and Benaud a ridiculously good 10. Freddie isn't the strongest batting 6 in this kind of comp, but with that tail behind him, he's good enough, and his bowling will be extremely useful in conjunction with Hadlee and whomever else you take.

He was the best player for my team, needed someone who could bat six, and only had one paceman. Fits in perfectly.

Its not bad at all - your team has come along well over the last few rounds IMO. I think Hussey's still a good selection, he's still got a tremendous average, though perhaps he was selected a few rounds too early. And perhaps there were a couple of other alternatives as spinners.

Benaud was a great pick. His average is deceptively high as he was weighed down by injury for the first few years of his career. I don't think its coincidence that when he found an effective treatment to that injury he dominated. Plus he could bat very well, and was an excellent captain.

Vettori is probably in the same category as Hussey - he was probably taken too early, but now, as the team sits, he's not a terrible pick.

Agreed regarding Benaud. I fully agree that statistics can be misrepresentative, thats why I was extremely pleased to get Botham, whose record on paper isn't quite as outstanding as one would imagine of a player of his quality, with about my fifth selection in the draft. Vettori will strengthen the tail but I can't help but feel there were still a few other options around at the time who would've been more beneficial.

Lance Gibbs.

I think he compliments my attack nicely - Botham, Procter and Thomson opening up, with Warne and Gibbs to follow. No prizes for guessing the type of pitches I'd like to prepare. :p

Btw Pskov is there going to be just 13 pitches or say 16-18 so there a fair mix even for guys down the bottom. Might make a difference with my last pick if I know I will be left with whatevers left or have a bit of choice.

Is that the batting order you are likely to have Jamee999 re: numbers 4,5,6?

I would personally go for Barrington, Chanderpaul, Martyn. Will be interested in seeing what keeper you go for, I think you and I are the only ones without one at this stage.
I haven't decided yet...

I'd have thought that there wouldn't be a limit and you'd be able to pick wherever you like - though its an interesting point.
