Andrew Symonds
Symonds is a terrific one day batsman who has produced some of the most exceptional one day innings in memory. With an average of over 40 and a Strike Rate over 90, opponents could very well be in a bit of a trouble if he gets going alongside Viv Richards.

Symonds superb fielding helps heaps and his bowling is steady and useful on occasions.

This guy was the mainstay of the Pakistani middle-order for decades making 7381 runs @ 41.7 in a really long career spanning from 1975 to 1996. He was one of the main contributors in their sole WC victory in 1992. When it comes to dissolving huge pressure in the middle and late overs in pressure cooker games, or when it comes to running hard between the wickets in the middle overs, or when it comes to milking singles playing the ball in the gap consistently in the middle overs, there was none better than this man in whole world in his time. His supremacy in the middle-order didn't only come from the fact that he had almost every shot in the book but also from the fact that he had almost every shot outside the book. When it comes to chasing targets, don't worry if your team loses 2 or 3 quick wickets as long as he is in the crease; he'll more often than not stabilize the innings and always have a calculator in mind. And in the odd scenario if you need an over-boundary to win the match in the last ball of the innings, he is the batsman you will look forward to!

Some say that it is the middle overs (15-40) which win you ODIs. Well, then I have the best bowler in the world in middle overs and one of the very best middle-order batsmen in my team. Of course, if you are playing on a bouncy surface then you may not even have to worry about the middle overs, simply because your batting line-up will often be wrapped up due to the presence of the other name in the team!

A classy presence in the top order to build an innings around, plus a good keeper too. In fact in ODIs his batting record is far better when he has the gloves than not.

As keeper

191 matches, 6066 runs, 38.15 ave, 75.86 sr, 8 centuries, 41 fifties

Not as keeper

44 matches, 893 runs, 26.62 ave, 63.60 sr, 2 centuries, 2 fifties

My team

Zaheer Abbas
Kumar Sangakkara+
Joel Garner

Haven't been following SL cricket closely of late, does he keep in ODIs nowadays?

G.I.Joe

Yes he does. He last played an ODI not as a keeper in 2004.
Could just be that his keeping coincided with an upswing in batting form then :p More secure of his place and all that jazz. Take Rahul Dravid for instance.

Have been thinking long and hard about tactics here and I've decided to go with another bowler, their numbers are getting smaller very quickly and theres few top shelf ones left and still requiring three more will make it hard to get too many more of them.

I'm picking Shane Warne, 293 wickets @ 25.73 in 194 matches.

Team so far
7 Imran Khan
8 Wasim Akram
9 Shane Warne

Why are you highlighting the percentage of not outs? Do you think this shows that the players you've picked are good at not getting out or what exactly?

hmmm... tough choice here between two excellent if sometimes often overlooked players for mine:

Kapil Dev: Good bowler, awesome late innings hitter.

Team so far:
Adam Gilchrist (9619 runs @ 35.89, SR: 96.94; 472 dismissals)
Kapil Dev (3785 runs @ 23.79, SR: 95.07; 253 wickets @ 27.45, SR: 44.2, ER: 3.71)
Shane Bond (125 wickets @ 19.32, SR: 27.5, ER: 4.2)

Not outs inflating averages are a pet peeve of mine. I prefer players that have a healthy average and strike rate with a low percentage of not outs contributing to the average. Always bothered me when people take the batting averages of guys like Klusener, Bevan, Imran etc at face value.

Damn you. he was to be my very next pick. He's the very antithesis of the statistically boosted cricketer for mine. Good batting average for a number 7, with low number of not outs and ridiculously high strike rate, and low economy rate as bowler.

Yeah I too was going to pick Kapil Dev over Andrew Symonds. Perhaps I picked Symo too early, but he has been a standout ODI performer.

Fair enough GI Joe about the not outs..

Goughy is up now.
