The CW Cup: battle of the association football teams

They are pretty crap, but they are a football club.
Football clubs, as a rule:

1) Are founded a fair while ago. Fail.
2) Do not have to cross an ocean to play all other teams of their league. Fail.
3) Can relegate. Fail
4) Have a youth set-up. Fail
5) Do not have an Americanised nickname. Fail

1) Rather the Phoenix than the Football Kingz
2) The Tasman is a SEA not an OCEAN, Einstein.
3) Ruling out a good number of teams throughout the world there chap.
4) They have the New Zealand Football League for that.
5) Most football teams have a nickname. I struggle to see what is Americanised about the Phoenix as a name? I guess you actually mean that football teams are called things like "United" or "Rovers" rather than "Phoenix" or "Bulldogs" or "Norwegian Spoilsport" or whatever, which is indeed a fair point. I can't stand the ****ty names that NRL teams, for example have. The Phoenix is a pretty unique one other than for teams from the City of Phoenix, I'd say.

Generally though, I'd say the main criteria for a football club is that you have players and members who organise and partake in the game known as FOOTBALL, ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL or SOCCER and thus your Five Point Manifesto is somewhat moot. The Phoenix do play something that could loosely be described as football, if you don't give a toss about a decent defence, that is.

With all this talk of nicknames i'm going to go for Wellington Phoenix, since they are named after the Manchester ice hockey team, Manchester Phoenix.

Bari

Cant believe we are going down to Wellington here, as long as Ajax dont win it then thats something, although I think they might from here.

Firstly I can proudly announce that AS Bari are now CW's official Italian team after they downed the old lady by 12-6. All hail the mighty Galleti.

In the main cup competition we have another draw. PSV & Wellington are tied at 9-9. So the decision befalls to me. I've no problem with either team particularly, but can't help but note that PSV knocked us out of the Champions League in 2007, so it has to be Wellington Phoenix who advance by 10-9.

Next up:

3. Tranmere Rovers v 4. AFC Ajax

GIMH's beloved face the Dutch total football masters.

Alongside I was going to run a comp to decide our favourite South African team, but realised I don't give a toss, so don't imagine many of you do either. So instead, to decide CW's favourite EPL team it's the:

Henry Ford "Any Colour As Long as it's Black & White" Cup

West Bromwich Albion v Newcastle United

Oh Dale, poor decision.

Anyway split on this one as my not voting for English teams comes into play while I dont want to see Ajax go further than us.
But anti Ajax wins over anti England, if it was Feyenoord and not Ajax then it would have been a different story.

WBA in the other, had some minor success with them on CM and used to be my favourite lower league team.

As much as I like Ajax I think that I have to vote for the Football league, so it's Tranmere Rovers

Newcastle United

Tranmere.

In an interesting story of why I can't vote for Ajax. The club i play for (or did before i went to Australia, hopefully ill be back in training soon) Old Mancunians, played in the Beerschot cup in Belgium in 1907 and played Ajax, who were newly formed(as were we) then in the semi finals and beat them 6-0. The Belgian press "La Chronique Sportive" described the match as follows:

"Those who know anything about continental football need not be reminded that the Dutch club are one of the best, but Old Mancunians confirmed their excellent reputation by continuing their good form against Ajax. They led 2-0 at half-time and their brand of dribbling football saw them score a further four second half goals to complete a resounding 6-0 victory".

Anyway, we wrote to Ajax to ask for a rematch in our centenary year(2006/2007), but they snubbed us so they need to go out.

WBA in the other
