The CW Cup: battle of the association football teams

The final whistle sounds on the third round. Ajax secure a comfortable 10-4 win to make it double Dutch () teams in the quarters. The second tie is level, so my casting vote unhesitatingly makes it 8-7 to Wellington Phoenix. I'm not quite undertsanding how Cluj have made it this far.

So our quarter-finalists look like this:

Tranmere Rovers
Exeter City
FC Barcelona
PSV Eindhoven
Partick Thistle
SV Werder Bremen
AFC Ajax
Wellington Phoenix

Two lower league English teams, two Dutch giants and one each from Spain, Scotland, Germany &, improbably, New Zealand.

I'll be posting one tie daily in the main draw from now on in, but will also be running a series of play-offs to determine CW's favourite team from a particular country or league where two have exited at the same time. Voting in both is, of course, mandatory.

First off the randomiser:

1. Wellington Phoenix v 2. PSV Eindhoven

& we also have the inaugural David Platt Slimfast Shield to determine CW's favourite Italian side after the two nominees exited at the first hurdle:

Juventus v AS Bari

NUFAN

Time to vote against the Phoenix, who have really struggled in the A League, apart from this year. Smeltz is gun btw. I'll go for PSV Eindhoven.

In the Italian battle I'll go for Juve, not my favourite Italian club though, at all.

PSV, as I've heard of them.

Italian football SUX, IMHO. Juve because they stole Notts Counties strip.

We're losing Smeltz to the Gold Coast next year, sadly.

I don't expect Wellington to win this one, but they've had a better than expected run for a Kiwi pseudo-Aussie team.

Phoenix

Do I have to vote in the David Platt Slimfast Shield? I'd rather vote for Cremonese. I don't like Juventus or Bari particularly.

It'll cost Wellington a vote if you don't.
Pah. This isn't even a proper fixture yet you demand votes! Well I can't do it I tells ya! Where in the FA Cup is there the pointless side fixture including two teams already knocked out?

I'm voting for Barventus.

Well, Bari - but it came down to the toss of a coin. I care for neither.

Some pretty harsh comments on the Phoenix now. They are pretty crap, but they are a football club.

PSV Eindhoven of course, hometown glory!

And Bari. Idiotic Juve players with their ridiculous renaissance beards.
