My team of H's to get us going:

1. Hobbs
2. Hutton
3. Harvey
4. Hammond
5. Headley
6. Hussey
7. Hill
8. Healy
9. Hadlee
10. Holding
11. Harbhajan

Viciously strong batting, could do with the spin bowling being bolstered. But better than most other letters' teams I think...

Is the number 7 Arthur Hill, England's finest test all-rounder (statistically) - or someone else?

Clem. Not actually ever heard of Arthur Hill :-O

edit: just checked out his Test stats. Very impressive in an Anthony McGrath kind of way!

Try this:

Woodfull
Wessels
Worrell
Weekes
Waugh*
Walcott+
Walters
Wasim
Warne
Waqar
Walsh

More than capable openers; absolutely awesome middle order and majestic bowling line-up.

Great team. Three Englishmen might make worthy squad members: Woolley, Willis and Wardle. And Wasim Bari as reserve keeper.

Hmm...should Wasim and Waqar really be in that?

EDIT: Nevermind, I suppose many Pakistanis are usually recognized by the first name anyway.

I had thought about this and for my money Wasim and Waqar are definitely Ws. Not so sure about where you'd put, say, Javed Miandad or Inzamam-ul-Huq

I count them as Ws because Cricinfo counts them as Ws  . Nah, I remember something about Pakistanis using their surname first also, IIRC.

Yeah, Willis probably has a good claim to go ahead of Walsh to be honest.

I'm tempted to search for my 1994 Almanack, I remember a section where they had alphabet teams as well as a team of 'others' and 'Mc and Mac'.

To play against

  1. Hunte
  2. Haynes
  3. Hayden
  4. Hazare
  5. Hassett
  6. Hendren
  7. Herbert Hordern
  8. Hendricks (keeper)
  9. Hirst George
  10. Hughes Merv
  11. Hall Wes
  12. Hendrick Mike

International 12th Man
Cook, Alistair
Chanderpaul, Shivnarine
Chappell, Greg
Cowdrey, Colin
Compton, Dennis
Cronje, Hansie*
Carter, Sammy+
Constantine, Learie
Clark, Stuart
Clarke, Sylvester
Croft, Colin

12th man: Chappell, Ian

A good but not great opening partnership (I think Chanderpaul has opened before, but not certain on that), but three magnificent players in the middle order. Cronje is a solid number 6 with useful medium pace and astute captaincy, Carter a good keeper with a good 20+ batting average for a pre-WWI keeper, the three pace bowlers offer variety and hostility with Constantine as a good option to change to spin.

Greenidge, Gordon
Gavaskar, Sunil
Gooch, Graham
Grace, W.G.
Ganguly, Sourav
Gilchrist, Adam+
Grieg, Tony*
Gough, Darren
Grimmett, Clarrie
Gillespie, Jason
Garner, Joel

12th man: Gower, David

Powerful top order followed by the legend that I just couldn't leave out. The bowling attack is maybe a bit pedestrian compared to some of the other alphabet teams, but how many of them can boast a test double centurion batting at 10?

Find it interesting Pskov that you would rate Cronje ahead of I. Chappell and also Ganguly above Gower.

Cronje can bowl and I think he is a better choice for captain than Chappell but I can see the argument either way. As for Gower above Ganguly, yeah I probably should make that swap. I suppose with all the Ganguly fever going on at the moment I just had him more prominently ingrained in my mind.

Maybe a bit light in the batting but I don't think too many will be queueing up to face that bowling attack!

Although you have taken all the masters viz Compton, Greg Chappell and Cowdrey. you have still ignored enough to allow me to put up another which is pretty good in batting and has better credentials in bowling.

  1. Collins, Herbie
  2. Chappell, Ian (Captain)
  3. Crowe, Martin
  4. Cowper, Bob
  5. Clarke, Michael J
  6. Cullinan, Daryll J
  7. Cairns, Chris
  8. Cameron, Horace (Keeper)
  9. Cork, Dominic G
  10. Caddick
  11. Chandrasekhar

The top four bowlers in your line up have a total of 307 wickets between them my line up has 825.

Then this side has at least one regular opener and a very good one in Herbie Colins. The second opener is makeshift but has great credentials and is one of the great captains of all time. Crowe is a great batsman and I would never leave him out. Lance Cairns is as good an all rounder as any though Constantine is a legend. Finally it has a great spinner in Chandrashekhar.

If I had to chose a combined team I would have taken

  1. Collins, Herbie
  2. Chappell, Ian (Captain)
  3. Chappell, Greg
  4. Compton, Denis
  5. Cowdrey, Colin
  6. Crowe, Martin
  7. Cairns, Chris
  8. Carter, Hanson (keeper)
  9. Croft, Colin
  10. Caddick, Andrew
  11. Chandrasekhar

From the previous times we've done this on here, here are my efforts at compiling teams.

M, L or H are the strongest teams, in my estimation…

M:
Morris
Mitchell
McCartney
McCabe
Miandad
Miller
Marsh+
Marshall
Muralitharan
McDermott/McKenzie/MacDonald
McGrath

With Martyn, Peter May, Mushtaq and MacGill on the bench.
Very even team with a lethal bowling attack.

H:
Hutton
Hobbs
Hammond
Headley
Harvey
Hill
Healy+
Hadlee
Holding
Hughes
Hall

Easily the strongest batting of any one letter, bowling not quite as good as "M" or "L", and no decent spinner is an issue.

L:
Lawry
Langer
Lara
Lloyd
Laxman
Langley+
Lindwall
Laker
Larwood
Lillee
Lohmann
L's bowling is top drawer, batting is quite strong, albeit a bit short.

T:
Trecothick
Taylor, M
Taylor, H
Tendulkar
Trumper
Thorpe
Tallon+
Trueman
Trumble/Tayfield
Tyson
Thompson
Solid batting, with terrifying pace attack.

G is not bad either:
Greenidge
Gavaskar
Grace
Gower
Ganguly
Grieg
Gilchrist+
Gregory, J
Gillespie
Garner
Grimmett
