Pakistan battle on a gloomy opening day
1st Test - Day 1 - Cricket Web XI vs Pakistan - Pickford Reserve
Rain and bad light made for a miserable opening day of the first Test at Pickford Reserve. Pakistan chose to bat first on a cloudy morning, but only faced 53 overs across the three sessions due to very poor weather. In that time they lost 3 wickets crept along to 108-3.

After his impressive exploits against the Chairmen's XI Salman Butt started well with a firm push down the ground against Nick Borcich. He raced to 5 and then padded up to Travis Demeza and the ball thumped ominously into his pads. The entire ground went up in appeal and the umpire caved to send Butt on his way. Twice more in the first hour Cricket Web XI could have had wickets, but Younis Khan was dropped twice before he reached 20. They were not costly mistakes, however, as Younis only got to 24. Neil Pickup made the inspired move of bringing Chris Butler into the attack and his medium pace did the trick. He bowled Younis in his 5th over.
At lunch Pakistan struggled on 58-2 and the second session was delayed by almost half-an-hour due to bad light. It was the foreshadowing of a gloomy end to the day. Even so the tourists showed impressive character and lost only one more wicket - captain Malik for 38 - before stumps were drawn early.

1st Test - Day 2 - Cricket Web XI vs Pakistan - Pickford Reserve
Mohammad Yousuf dug deep in difficult conditions, but failed to deliver on his promise and was out for 48- the biggest casualty on another rain-curbed day. Yousuf's fellow overnight batsman, Misbah-ul-Haq (10) was trapped in front of his stumps by a sharp inswinging delivery from Travis Demeza. Demeza has struggled in domestic cricket this season, but looked an entirely different bowler and he upped his pace and zipped past the tentative Pakistani bats with consistency.
Heavy rain brought an early lunch with Yousuf left on 28, and through the 7 overs available in the afternoon session, he motored to 41. Bad light then curtailed that session and at tea Pakistan stood on 145-4. Cricket Web XI started the last session poorly, as Dave Richards dropped Kamran Akmal on 17, but following a couple more rain breaks, they righted that wrong. Neil Pickup applied pressure throughout his spell and outwitted Yousuf with a googly that he nicked to short leg 2 short of his 50.

The Webbers piled on the pressure and crowded the new batsman Sohail Tanvir. Mike Wilson nipped the ball back into the pads, but Tanvir survived a tight appeal. It seemed that Pakistan would scrape home to the end of the day without further loss, when in the dying moments Borcich beat Akmal with a toe-crushing yorker. Yasir Arafat joined Tanvir and they put on a quick 20 runs, heading to stumps on 196-6.

Cricket Web XI battle into the lead
1st Test - Day 3 - Cricket Web XI vs Pakistan - Pickford Reserve
The Webbers were up for the fight when the weather improved on the third day in Pickford, and they ended the day in the lead with 3 wickets still intact. The morning session was dominated by Travis Demeza and Neil Pickup as they shared the 4 remaining Pakistan wickets. In all Cricket Web XI needed just 7.4 overs to wrap up the tail.
In their response, CW XI lost Mamesh (4) to Sohail Tanvir, then played well to reach the break without further loss. After lunch the home side resumed their attack, and showed particularly aggressive intent against an unsettled Shoaib Akhtar. The plan almost backfired two balls in, however, when Akmal floored a simple chance to reprieve Pete Young on 11. It was symptomatic of the Pakistan effort on the day. The bowlers tried to apply pressure, but the fielders were sloppy and often relieved it. Mørk was dropped on 43 and looked good for a priceless half-century, when he missed a straight delivery from Tanvir 1 short of the milestone.

Mike Wilson united with his Colts teammate Chris Butler and they sought to display the depth of the CW XI order with a partnership of 37.

The situation was primed for the explosive batting of Wilson and he did not disappoint. Nick Borcich offered the solid support of a 20-ball 12, allowing Wilson to light up the Reserve with another attractive half-century. At the day end he had scored 66 from 119 balls and the lead was increased to a notable 68.

I know the feeling, definetly the best i've bowled. Good to see the Pakistani's on the back foot. Hopefully the weather doesn't screw us any more than it already has.

1st Test - Day 4 - Cricket Web XI vs Pakistan - Pickford Reserve
Thamba Mamesh launched after Shoaib Akhtar and hurried a 10-wicket win to start the Cricket Web XI campaign on a positive note. After an excellent effort with the ball, the Webbers raced to a meagre target of 44 within 10 overs and walked off to a standing ovation.
The day began with the tail end of the CW XI first innings in the wars. Pakistan only needed 9.1 overs to take the last 3 wickets, but largely because of the batting of Mike Wilson, the home side put on a further 32 runs to reach 325 all out. Wilson was the first wicket to fall on the day, bowled by Akhtar for 84 with a quick yorker. The final two wickets then fell cheaply and Sohail Tanvir completed a 4-wicket haul. Pakistan returned to the crease trailing by an even 100 runs, and Demeza immediately put them into further trouble. With his second ball he found a thin outside edge and sent Salman Butt packing for a duck.
Shoaib Malik's act of defiance featured two cut shots for four, then he too was out, caught at slip for 9. Demeza then eased off the gas and left Nick Borcich and Mike Wilson to get into the act. The former dismissed Younis Khan for 14 and the latter picked up Mohammad Yousuf (8) with a beautifully disguised slower ball. The prolific batsman attempted to drive square and mistimed the shot to be caught by Young in the covers. Pakistan went to lunch on 43-4. They returned in the second session with more fighting spirit and improved their fortunes with a fifth wicket stand of 51. Kamran Akmal played himself in aggressively and notably whipped Demeza off his pads for six, but on 32 he was deceived by a Pickup googly and adjudged lbw.

The spinners tightened the noose by exploiting the turning surface, and eventually Richards outplayed Tanvir (5) and had him caught bat-pad. Fast bowler Nick Borcich replaced his captain and got Yasir Arafat to edge to second slip where Mamesh juggled the ball before clinging on. The celebration truly kicked off, however, when Borcich appealed successfully for the wicket of Misbah-ul-Haq in his next over. The right-hander appeared to have gotten outside of offstump when he was hit on the pad, but he was issued marching orders by umpire Marshall Griffin for 33. The tailenders fought on into the final session and added a further 26 runs and left CW XI 44 runs with the better part of 5 sessions to do so.
Mamesh faced up to Akhtar for his first ball in the third over, and clinically dispatched it to the midwicket fence. The following ball he stepped down the pitch and smashed it back overhead for six, and then completed the insult with two more boundaries before the over was out. Akhtar grabbed his hat from the umpire and walked off swearing at himself. It was the perfect summation of a miserable end to the match for the tourists, who move onto the second Test in a 1-0 hole.
