Geraint Jones... a forgotten hero?

The Masterplan

U19 Debutant
Because he's too slow and losing his ability to do anything useful.. he'll probably be in a wheelchair by 2009 anyway because of his side strains and back problems

To be an International swing bowler you need to have that nippy pace.. Hoggard showed a great example of this in the 2005 ashes and Jimmy Anderson has as well...

I'm sorry but I just don't rate him...

Batting at 7 (or lower) for the best part of his career explains why he never did any better. For example, he once scored 122NO batting at 8. So it's kinda an unfair criticism that he never bettered 125.

P.S. he wasn't batting at 3, he was batting at 6.

12 or 13 lines down.. read

I just assumed it would be number 3 or 4 or something... why would a night watchmen come in at 6 anyway?

International 12th Man
Boucher has actually made two centuries in 40 innings from number eight, which is quite impressive.

Waiting for GeraintIsMyHero to post.
Same here..
:D

He's not a forgotten hero. Even if my username was a little tongue-in-cheek it is no secret that I was a fan, always thought he got more stick than he should of, and as discussed in a different thread the other day his keeping was good, very good in 2006, but he couldn't buy a run. Shame really, like the bloke, had his day in the sun though and don't think he will look back on his career with much regret.

Yeah. Come on England. The team you selected back in 2005 WON THE ASHES!!! ROFL LOL ROFL LOL!

It doesn't matter whether you're playing a test today, next week, next year, next century... You won the Ashes with Geraint Jones so bring 'im back in. Whilst you're at it, bring back Ashley Giles. He may have a bust hip, but bring him back. **** it, even if rigor mortis has set in, bring him back BECAUSE HE WON THE ASHES.

ROFL LOLOLOLOLOL ROFL

This thread is a total joke.

That's what my last article was about, dunno if you read it but this country hankers so much after replicating past successes. As well as Cricket, see Jonny Wilkinson and tbh I'm surprised we didn't take Geoff Hurst the last WC, though he would have been a better pick than Walcott

All England's focus on the Ashes does is ensure that there's a much greater chance of mediocrity when playing against anyone else.

All I hear in the warm-up to every game from Botham and Hussain is, "This will be a good test of England in advance of next year's Ashes"

What total tripe full of the goodness of marrowbone jelly. The Ashes are a year off - everyone could be struck down by consumption before then. Focus on winning the bloody match in front of you for crying out loud.

I completely agree. I love the Ashes and I do get excited about them but Test matches aren't stepping stones to the Ashes FFS. This is a huge challenge of a series, we're still in there just about but thoughts of playing the Aussies are way off.

Mark Boucher > Geraint Jones any day in my opinion. Better batting, and fairly equal keeping. I would much prefer Boucher coming in at number 7 if we collapsed to 5/100, where Jones would just crumble. I am looking forward to seeing him get selected for the 2009 Ashes (if he does, that is) and come in a massive pressure situation. He will more than likely fail.

The fact is that most England fans care more about the Ashes than anything else (I wouldn't be all that unhappy with mediocrity against all comers provided England won the Ashes). For this to be England's priority seems to me to be completely rational.

Well sure, Boucher might well be > Jones

Similarly, Dravid > Bell
Ponting>Vaughan
Muralitharan>Panesar

Not really relevant to who should keep wicket for England, though.

I dunno, beating the Aussies will always be the most satisfying thing in Cricket, and probably always will be. But for pretty much the whole time I've followed cricket ye crims have been top dog. Should someone else be top dog, say India, I would like to think that a series against them would get at least equal billing to the Ashes. But we'd probably just play a 3 day First-Class game and 11 ODIs or something

I find this belief staggering, and I personally think that this is part of what's holding England back...

Ashes, ashes, ashes. I get nothing but Ashes, morning noon and night.

I don't think anyone is seriously suggesting that Jones is as good as Boucher.
I'm fairly confident that Jones has played his last Test.
I don't rate Jones as a keeper, a batsman, or a batsman/keeper.

In fairness to him, in the ultimate pressure situation at Edgbaston in 2005, he didn't crumble - he took the catch on which the Ashes rested.

That's true. Gradually catching up with the Windies from 1990 to 2000 meant a lot. Thrashing them in 2004 didn't.

At present there's a perfect storm - Australia have held the Ashes since 1989 (except for a year and a bit from September 2005) and are the best team in the world, as well as being our oldest and bitterest rivals.

Did I get over-excited about beating New Zealand home and away in the last few months? Er not really. And if we'd lost I would have been disappointed but wouldn't have been heartbroken.
