Twenty20 Cup Round 2
Rabid Wolves v Masters XI
Rabid Wolves finished strongly with the bat to secure a comfortable 5-wicket win over Masters XI. Sam Morris (44*) and Kieron Pollard (21*) piled on 39 runs from 19 balls to complete a potentially tricky chase with 5 balls remaining. Morris initiated the fireworks by slogging Shane Warne for six over midwicket, then chipping him back overhead for a flat six. But it was Pollard who stole the show in the closing exchanges. He hit 3 sixes in his 9-ball cameo, including a firm slog over long-on off Rankin to finish things off.
The impressive batting performance followed a disappointing bowling show, headed by the still-wicketless Kev Gough. The Rabid Wolves captain did not bowl poorly, but struggled against the improvisation of Lance Klusener at the top of the order. Zulu powered his way to 87 off 51 balls, and starred in a very challenging innings of 171-4. He received excellent support from the rest of the top order, particularly Samit Patel with a solid knock of 39. Crucially for Rabid Wolves, Ryan Dunn twisted his ankle at the end of his first over and was not allowed to bowl for the rest of the innings, as a precautionary measure. He has since been pronounced fit.
The second innings began in spectacular fashion with a boundary first ball and then the wicket of Nick Scott, edging to the lone slip. Sean Bennett hit three boundaries in the following over, but he too was out before its completion, nicking Rankin to Prior attempting a booming drive. Much responsibility was thrust upon Mørk when Saqlain Mushtaq accounted for Ben Read (16) and he responded with a very solid half-century- his fourth in Twenty20 cricket. His innings was the anchor of the chase, setting a platform for Morris and Pollard to launch toward victory at the end.

Mathemagicians v Dazzlers
Dazzlers bounced back from their first round defeat to beat Mathemagicians by 15 runs, keeping them on a duck in the tournament. It was a fantastic fightback from the abyss of 29-5, and captain Kingsley Clapham was front and centre with both bat and ball. Left-armers Adam Collins and Neil Carter did a fantastic job with the new ball for Mathemagicians, and 3 of the top of 5 Dazzlers fell without scoring. Stephen Young provided some solidity with 30 from 22 balls, but he was run out by a direct hit by Jamee Gray. The score was then 58-6, but for the second consecutive game the Mathemagicians let their opponents off the hook. Zac Gelman scored a swift cameo of 38 from 24 balls to spark initially. The main charge, however, came from further down the order. Chris Schofield hit 5 fours and 2 sixes in 50 from 29 balls, and Kingley Clapham hit a magnificent 46 not out with 5 sixes. From the last 75 balls of the innings Dazzlers notched 129 runs for the loss of 4 wickets. They settled on 187-9 at the end of 20 overs and left a dejected Mathemagicians team.
Matt Luff tried to get the chase off to a brisk start with positive intent against Travis Demeza. The CW Red opener hit 3 fours in the first over of the innings and went on to dominate a partnership of 35 for the first wicket. The situation looked ominous when Clapham brought himself on for the 4th over and swung momentum back his team's way. A run was scored off the first ball, but the second was on target and removed Gray for a disappointing 8. Sanath Jayasuriya drove through the offside for 2 runs, but he too was gone before the over's completion. Clapham curved the ball back into the left-hander and trapped him in front of the stumps. Young Morgan Burridge joined Luff for a partnership of 42 from 31 balls, getting things back on track for a while.
Ultimately he was a third wicket for Clapham, allowing Dazzlers back into control. Luff picked out the cover fielder with a booming drive in the 16th over, out for 55 and leaving his team needing 66 from the last 26 balls. Andrew Garven and Blake Donald tried with some enterprising shots, including an outstanding flat six over cover by the latter, but could only manage 50 runs in the little time remaining.
Dazzlers innings 187-9 (20 overs)
CP Schofield 50 (29), KR Clapham 46* (22), ZE Gelman 38 (24)
AAA Collins 4-29 (3)
Mathemagicians innings 172-5 (20 overs)
MD Luff 55 (37), AJ Garven 39 (23), MC Burridge 35 (26)
KR Clapham 3-23 (3)
Dazzlers won by 25 runs.
Man of the Match: KR Clapham
Upper Body v Ninjas
For all the efforts of a spirited Mohammad Amir, Upper Body stayed perfect with a narrow win over Ninjas. The batting star on this occasion was Jay Gonzalez, though he was dropped thrice - on 1, 2 and 33 - on his way to a game-winning 63 not out. In his 41-ball innings he scored 3 fours and 3 sixes. Upper Body had previously been struggling on 48-5 in the chase of 137. The damage was done initially by the very impressive Amir. Bowling at lively pace and mixing in yorkers and short balls, the CW Red fast man managed to unsettle and dismiss Dan Smith (6) and Liam Camps (0) in his first spell. The latter only lasted one ball.
Darren Murphy arrived with his notoriously flashy attire, promising much once more, but delivering only 14 runs. He ultimately clipped a Nixon full toss into the lap of square leg. Gareth Gooljar then got in on the act to deal with Fitzsimmons and Dwyer with increasingly flat legspin. But Upper Body had still managed to score quickly enough to afford one rebuilding partnership. Aseem Sharma obliged, packing away his explosive game and settling in for an innings of 24 off 25 balls. He was the perfect foil for Gonzalez, who look to dispatch anything marginally short and ran aggressively. Amir was recalled for his third over with Upper Body closing in on victory. It was the final throw of the dice by Thomas and paid off. With his first ball Amir surprised Sharma with a short ball and he gloved a looping catch to Adam Hollioake at short fine leg. Rhys Williams announced his arrival with a firm cover drive for four, but before the over was out he met an eerily similar fate. Upper Body needed 7 to win, so there was still some semblance of life in the game. Alas it was Dave Mohammed at the crease, and he grabbed his first opportunity to shine with a firm uppercut over third man for a winning six.
Earlier Ninjas required some late hitting by Greg Thomas and Mohammad Amir to reach even the modest heights of 136-8. Andy Maina continued to express his talents as a Twenty20 bowler, mixing pace exceptionally in a spell of 4-0-20-4. Williams was also a potent factor, taking another couple of economical wickets with his chinaman bowling. After slipping to 95-8, Thomas and Amir took their places in the middle. They had 5 overs left to bat, so the two bowlers rotated the strike as often as possible, before Thomas hit two boundaries in the last over to finish the innings. It was an admirable effort, but ultimately too little.
Ninjas innings 136-8 (20 overs)
GM Thomas 26* (20), RF Bowen 23 (20), AP Chaulk 21 (15)
AEK Maina 4-20 (4)
Upper Body innings 139-7 (17.4 overs)
JP Gonzalez 63* (41), A Sharma 24 (25)
MU Amir 4-24 (3)
Upper Body won by 3 wickets.
Man of the Match: JP Gonzalez
****atoos v Turistas
Daniel Speirs lit up Fardingham with the first Twenty20 hundred in CWLand. Speirs faced just 68 balls to score 107 unbeaten, and hit 6 fours and 8 sixes in the process. Turistas put in a much improved effort against a disappointing ****atoos attack. The new ball was squandered by Davis and Wright and 43 runs came from the first 3.2 overs. The opening batsmen put on 43 runs before pinch hitter Paddy Gundry was run out for 15. Pete Young replaced him and the runs continued to flow. There were few problems on a very flat pitch, and as Young lofted a Kearsley full toss to the deep, it came as a great surprise against the run of play. Speirs continued on with little consideration for the break in momentum. His fifty took 39 balls and he raced to his century from another 25 balls.
At the other end Andrew Cloete (20*) assisted ably and Turistas registered a challenging 182-2. ****atoos set out positively in their innings, but seemed more intent on throwing wickets away than posing a genuine threat. Paddy Gundry and Dwayne Smith snapped up 2 wickets each in limiting the hosts to 83-6. The in-form lower order was then called into play. Zander de Bruyn got going with 3 fours from his first 4 balls and went on to score his first 28 runs in boundaries. David Kearsley was already well set when de Bruyn entered, so he merely increased his personal momentum. From a start of 14 off 15 balls, Kearsley accelerated to score 50 from 38 balls. His milestone came up with a single off the first ball of the final over. ****atoos entered the over needing 19 to win, but de Bruyn could not get away the accurate yorker-length bowling of Xavier Rose. He hit a boundary off the penultimate ball, but needing 9 off the final ball, the game was out of reach. The South African had to settle for a single to the deep.
Turistas innings 182-2 (20 overs)
DG Speirs 107* (68), PE Young 40 (28), AP Cloete 20* (13)
DA Kearsley 1-27 (3)
