Rugby League - International

NUFAN

Y no Afghanistan flag
I've been thinking too much about NRL this week. I suppose I better change up my lineup a little bit.

Rhinos to take out the world club championship then? If it's as good as the Saints/Broncs game last year I shan't complain.

Storm are a very good well drilled side so it should be close.

I think given that Leeds have played 3 Super League matches already and the Storm are still in trials mode gearing up for round 1 Leeds SHOULD win.

The loss of Cam Smith is huge for the Storm and Greg Inglis too.

Having said all this I'll go for a Melbourne win by 4 points.

doubt Storm can win without Smith, Inglis and Crocker. Three internationals gone right there...

Week Four Super League Dream Team Update

A pretty solid week for me sees a bit of a gap open at the top. I actually managed the =6th highest score for the week in the whole comp, so chuffed with that.

Elsewhere SImon's NRL expertise seemingly not surviving the trans-hemispheric journey as Matteh puts daylight between 4th & 5th.

1. One Vowel From Hell (Brumby) 259
2. NUFAN DO IT (bowie) 204
3. Sweet Potatoes (steds) 174
4. Team Matteh (Matteh) 150
5. PSV Eindhoven (Simon_ACT) 114

Has Matt Petersen played for Wakefield yet? If so, how is he going?
You actually posted this over 24 hours before Wakefield announced the signing. You must be psychic. Makes his debut on Sunday against Dav's home town team, Oldham.

In other news, Cullen gone.
About 2 years due. Spouts nothing but rubbish and has done ****e all with the money that's allowed him to buy Gleeson, Morley, Reardon, Rauhihi, King, Monaghan and Andrew Johns for a short spell. I know nobody on here cares, I just wanted to release.

In an almost seamless segue, given Castleford administered the last rites to Cullen's reign, what do you make of Westerman? Kid has pretty big wraps on him.

It was well already reported here that he had signed for Wakefield. It was a big story here.

Watching a replay of the game now. Only the third time I've seen him, but he looks like he's got all the tools. Solid in defence, good ball handling skills, particularly in getting the ball out of the tackle, and an excellent step. He can also kick a goal too. I can see where the Sculthorpe comparisons come from. Obvious similarities in their style of play.

Of course, it's too early to tell whether he'll turn out as good as people say he will. There are plenty things for him to work on. I don't like the idea of on 18 year old playing 80 minute matches against the likes of Hock, Peacock, Fakir and Solomona week in-week out, either. You only need to look at what happened to Sculthorpe, Cunningham 2001 - 2003 and Farrell post-union convertion to see my point. But with the lack of depth and talent at Cas, it's a necessity.

Potential's there, though. No doubt.

Watched a replay of St Helens and Hull FC today, and one of the commentators described Paul Wellens as one of the best full backs in the world. ITSTL.

I think when they say "In the world" they mean "In the UK". A bit like Andy Farrell was the best player in the world apparently a few years back.

Don't see what's contentious about that tbh. Wellens is an excellent defensive fullback whose awareness and positional play is top notch. He's one of the few genuine quality players we've got up here. Only thing that lets him down is the fact that he's a comparable speed to Heather Mills without the prosthetic leg.

England destroy France 56-8. 'Tis the least I expected, considering this tme 3 years ago they only had 2 full time professionals.

Feels weird cheering on a team called England instead of GB. I miss us being Britain.

Saw about 15 minutes after the 2020 finished. Was quite surprised at how empty the stadium was. I know rugby a treize is still a pretty small concern frog-side, but really thought a few more would go out of curiousity, if nothing else. Toulouse is a big rugby town, even if they prefer the senior code.

Anyway, nice to get the win but any pleasure I get is a bit tempered by the desire to see the code grow & France getting thrashed royally every test can't be good for that.

Indeed. Toulouse and the South West of France are supposedly the stronghold of league down there, too.

Tbf to France getting thrashed-wise, they were missing both first choice props and Greseque at scrum half. Plus 5 players have not played since April or May and are only part time players anyway. Can't be good for fitness levels, as shown by us scoring 40 points in the second half. They were the better side for much of the first 20 minutes or so.

I'm looking forward to see how Tim Smith goes for Wigan. I know that makes him a **** because he is playing for them, but still.
