For a minute I thought you were in a box, under a rock in the middle of Wales. I mean, the Samuels story was pretty huge news.

And Fletcher is picked on potential rather than performance. Much like Xavier Marshall and, to a lesser extent, Mitchell Johnson. He's shown genuine talent at domestic level and an aggressive mindset. Could be something special if handled well, and I don't have a huge problem with him playing this ODI series. Especially considering that the next best options are Runako Morton and Lendl Simmons. That said, Dale Richards isn't half bad, if a bit old.

EDIT: And talking of Marlon Samuels, he was picked with virtually no first-class experience to play Test cricket against a better Australia IN Australia back in the day. He did a fine job, all things considered. Yes, he didn't quite push on, but he did have a very impressive debut series. So it's not like there's no precedent for this kind of thing.
Why not pick any player willy nilly then on the basis they have potential. All things considered I don't know why Brendon Nash isn't picked, probably a better option then some of the guys picked with only a few games under his belt and labelled as 'talented' and 'potential' yet is evidently not ready yet.

Watto will have his time. Hayden and Marsh atm, with Watto down the order maybe. Not extremely fussed anymore, they're all awesome. Deadset though, such a fun ODI to watch, it had so many of my favourite players. I'll say it again, Marsh is my favourite batsman in the world to watch bar none.

wonder where he was all this time, tbh. He is 24.. By that time, Yuvraj etc. were pretty famous names in world cricket.

It's the Australian Team though. Not exactly many openings. Has always been mentioned thereabouts, if not only for his connection to his Dad, but he showed a lot of class last season. In a patch at the moment aswell, but will be good enough when he comes out of it for mine.

Had big wraps on him for a while, and the fact that for example Dave Hussey could never crack it into the same WA side when he was 24, and Marsh was 18-19.

I must confess that before Marsh was dropped for his discipline [with Pomersbach] that I thought the loss of Marsh wasn't a huge deal.

Anyone else who played the Fantasy Domestic Comp last year should remember that Marsh was such a cheap buy so the makers of the game didn't expect much from him and this was just over 12 months ago! TBH I did buy him, but only cause he was cheap.

Anyways.. I wonder how someone like Marsh's team mate Adam Voges must be feeling? He was so close to getting into our Test side and he played a ODI and looked up to it, now he's not really talked about.

1. Fletcher is not just "any player". He's shown great potential through the age ranks and showed signs of it again in limited T20 and List-A opportunities. It's not just a random selection. There is some reasoning behind it, and tbh, it's a bit uneducated to call it a "willy nilly" selection.

It's like New Zealand picking Tim Southee. Fletcher may not be ready for international cricket, and is certainly not as good a player (yet) as Southee is, but the principle is the same. Of the limited players available, the selectors believe that Fletcher has a lot of potential, regardless of his lack of experience.

2. Brendon Nash did precisely nothing of note with the bat in one day matches this past season. He bowled well, but that's irrelevant when picking a middle order batsman. Not sure how that qualifies him as more ready than Fletcher is.

3. Why is Fletcher the one whose selection is so criticized when Pollard is hardly any more ready for international cricket? Yes, Pollard has player a few more matches and certainly done more than Fletcher, but he also had a very mediocre season leading into this series.

To the ignorant....
Er no. The reason he was banned was for taking money from bookies. Regardless of what actually happened, that's why he was banned. There's really not much ignorance attached to Gelman's statement. It's also quite accurate.
