He is an Icon player although he refused the Icon salary for the sake of his team so that they could get better players.

Needless to say a 'class act' as always by the classy man.
He told BCCI not to consider him as an ICON..he could have been snapped up by any team...but Deccan put a high enough amount to retain him

Whatever it takes!!!

It was a class act on his part. It takes real courage to do what he did. He knew that he wasn't going to be in much demand amongst the other teams anyways and yet he decided to cut down on his own salary by refusing to be an icon, so that his team could bid and get better players for that money. Amazing act of class.... :notworthy:

I think Symonds poor bowling performance really shows how much you need specialist bowlers in this format. The sides that have struggled have been the ones that rely on average domestic bowlers or international batting all rounders/part timers. Personally I can't see Styris performing much better with the bowl. Reckon they might have give Nuwan Zoysa a game when Symonds leaves. He opens the batting regular these days in Domestic One Dayers and Twenty20 matches. So he could also add as option with the bat. Maybe not as opener but a pinch hitter around 6-8.

Personally I don't think Laxman captaincy was that bad during the match. If he didn't bowl out Afridi, Vaas and RP Singh early then I reckon the match would have been over before the last over. Even if he gave Symonds/Ojha/Kalyankrishna/Bangar a bowl before Vaas and Singh. It would have left them too much to do and they probably would have lost anyway.

It also interesting to see teams like Chennai, Delhi and Rajasthan doing well. All these teams have a fairly good balance between Indian players and overseas players. You really do need a good core group of local players to play well in this competition. The teams with fillers everywhere are the ones that struggle. Reckon a few teams might play more attention when they buy in local players. A lot of guys have been picked basically on talent rather then performances at FC level. Might see a few more experienced players running around next season.
I think you are spot on with your views mate, Laxman's tactics and captaincy have been really poor and he has hardly shown any imagination in his captaincy, he has such a strong squad of players but he always seems to make sure that he messes things up somehow, but hey... lets not take any credit away from the Royals who were never rated too highly by anybody and they were regarded as the weak-link among all these teams in the IPL, but Warne's amazing leadership and his ability to think out of the box and instilling belief in his young players that they can make a mark against the big-guns is what that's making the Royals click, so hats off to Warnie, he is truly amazing.

Symonds isn't a world class Bowler. Laxman should have bowled anyone, even himself. Even Mickey mouse would have bowled better.

Even in Kolkata Symonds was pathetic his figures dont tell the story, his two overs cost the chargers 24 runs and basically turned the momentum in Kolkata's way. Against Delhi, he was hammered again for 35 in 2 overs. And again he was already expensive in his first two overs.
Btw, why the hell is he bowling medium-pace, he would have been much better off bowling his offies.

Look IMO this whole ICON thing is a load of bull-****, i mean look at players like Sachin, Ganguly, Dravid and Laxman, i mean would any franchise be intrested in paying these guys the kind of money they are getting atm just because off their ICON status, the whole ICON thing adds unwanted pressure on the franchises, so i think it should be scrapped, what Laxman did is classy, but BCCI shouldn't have inforced such a stupid rule in the first place.

He did bowl his offies in the last over.
Oppsssie............. my bad, anyways i didn't watch the game so i didn't knew that, anyways as you said that T20 is not a format where you can expect part-timers to bowl well for you, you need specialist bowlers and still they would also need a lot of luck to survive in this format.

There was no question of him being in demand or not. Deccan Chargers wanted him as their ICON player and they were willing to pay any price. But VVS asked them to not consider him as an Icon player so that they could go after better players. No wonder they got Symonds and Gilly.

BCCI did it only to market the tournament and for the benefit of Franchise.

Obviously Sourav Ganguly playing for Bengal and Tendulkar Playing for Mumbai makes much more marketing sense. That said they should not have put any price tag on those players.

i am 100% sure that sachin would have got the highest BID amount if he had not been an ICON...more than what Dhoni got..

With out ganguly kolkata knight riders wont be able to pull much people in kolkata

and read yesterday in a paper that Chennai...is the place where they are having the least viewship for the IPL and that too even when CSK is playing...so marketing wise i think ICON do benifit

IPL is going to struggle. The next time one can see a full- packed stadum may be for the semis.
Too much of cricket is taking the interest off it.

In the next edition of IPL(if any) ,
they should cut down the number of teams to 4.( all metros, Delhi,Mumbai,Calcutta,Chennai)
Also the limit for foreign players should be taken off.

Well TV ratings are still through the roof and killing all the major soaps it's competing with so no chance of them slowing down if that continues.

As for the crowds, it's obvious we'll see a bit of a dip and plateau, but I still think crowds for weekend matches and for the matches between the dominant teams will sell big.

Like any other sport the worst teams will take big crowd hits, so Deccan Chargers and Mumbai Indians not doing well this tournament is a big blow for organisers and two big cities like that, especially Mumbai need to be leading the way for this tournament for it to take off huge.
