Assuming tests, Laxman for me. I think he has a slight edge over the superlative Waugh.

Mark Waugh for me. Tough choice though, one of the most difficult ones so far.

Tough choice.... I loved watching Mark Waugh bat... When Laxman is in full flow he's great to watch as well. Despite Waugh's bad patch towards the end of his career, I'm voting for Waugh.

Mark Waugh but not by much. Was an absolute myth that he only played well when the going was good, though. Saved the Aussies with the bat in Tests on a number of occasions. Definitely under-achieved though. Laxman the much heavier scorer in individual innings, though.

Laxman makes his runs when they are usually most needed. Prefer him over Waugh in Tests. Waugh easily the better batsman (even ignoring his bowling) in ODIs.
Sorry mate, I seem to be following you around:wacko:

Waugh played a number of great innings two against Sth Afr come to mind:)

Was one of them at SCG can't remember.. might've been at Adelaide.. i have blur memories of one.
He even knocked the stumps down with his hand but that was when he was walking away, He wasn't in the process of playing shot so he wasn't given out or anything.

Tough one. Both favourite players of mine.

Would pay to watch Waugh field, tbh.

Remember that catch he took off Laxman at short mid wicket in 2001? The look on VVS' face was priceless.

Quite possible, mate. Didn't follow Juniors career quite as closely as Laxmans. Anyway, with their grace and elegance, as long as they average 40+, we're sure to be entertained by both. :)

It used to be priceless, now VVS has that look on his face almost everytime he's out. Refer to first innings of the 3rd test vs. South Africa.

Its become his trademark lol. I love VVS, but everytime he's bowled he'll have that look as if to say "how the hell did that happen?". Its because you didn't come forward you dope.

To be fair though his dismissal in the 3rd test vs. SA was due to a jaffer of a ball.

Adelaide I think, and Hansie put a stump through the umpires door:-O

Yeah i thought it was Adelaide because Aus went on to win that series after scrapping through with a draw in Adelaide.

I miss my days of actually liking Aus cricket team, so many likeable players.

Terrific comparison actually from Sangrah - as long as it's purely regarding Test batsmen. Waugh obviously could earlier in his career bowl to decent standards; was obviously infinitely the better ODI batsman; and was the better of two superlative close-catchers. And two of the batsmen I'd choose to watch above all bar maybe 3 or 4. And yes, two batsmen who should have done so much more with their Test careers after unbelievable scoring at the domestic level while the Test way was blocked. Laxman at least has the excuse that he was idiotically made to open for much of his early career.

I'd have Mark Waugh ahead as a Test batsman, just. Laxman, for all his superlativeness from March 2001 to January 2004, had only this to recommend him, though it's true he's been damn good again of late and I've been delighted about that after some idiots from over here seemed to think he was finished in March 2006. 8-) Laxman, unquestionably, could play innings of the height that Mark Waugh could never manage. Yet the truth is Mark Waugh was a very fine Test batsman for near enough all the time between 1990/91 and 2001. This is considerably more than Laxman, sadly, managed or is ever likely to, despite playing innings Jnr. Waugh could not.
