Can Hussey be the 2nd greatest ever?

It was just an example, and Hoggard-Flintoff-Sidebottom-Jones (all fully fit) would be England's best bowling attack for a surface that is likely to assist seam and swing.
Harmlessone deserves a mention, too, surely, for the apparently renewed verve and vigour that he exhibited during the Sri Lankan tour.

Let's start talking when he starts getting wickets again, shall we? And not until then.

He could hardly have done any worse than he did last summer, and no-one can bowl that awfully forever, even him.

:)

He has fallen on such bad days that anything better than the last Ashes series down under seems like a resurrection

Didn't get to see any of that series and I was away from home so didn't read any match reports etc.

Rest assured, his (along with Plunkett's) performances last summer were far, far worse than anything that happened in Australia in 2006\07, though once or twice he touched said lows in 2002\03.

Read my series review later today. ;) Nah, he was far better than normal, but naturally he was never remotely likely to get much out of a Sri Lankan surface, and so it proved.

What I found most promising was his apparent rediscovery of that natural, throat-threatening length of his. As you say, it is unlikely to yield much success on subcontinental featherbeds, but, if he can retain it through a few home series...

Keith Miller only had 27 innings in his first 20 tests (1007 runs @ 43.78)

(batting at # 3, # 4 or # 5)
Thilan Samaraweera 26 in his first 20.

Batting 3, 5, 6, 7 and 8, scoring 3 hundreds, 6 fifties and almost 1100 runs.

PS, Michael Clarke 31.

You can't seriously think that they have no talent. That's like saying Mark Ramprakash has no talent. Rubbish statement.
Well everyone has some talent, obviously. The likes of Cumming, Ganga, etc. can obviously play else they wouldn't be in cricket teams, never mind anywhere near international level. But by the standards of many, they (Badrinath excepted) are decidedly poor.

LOL at Cumming and Ganga getting a mention!

Just an update on whether Hussey will be the 2nd greatest run scorer ever after 20 Tests?

I'd say unlikely as he now needs 238 runs in the next test....3rd highest run scorer with the 2nd highest average is not bad though ;)

(1) Don Bradman: 20 tests, 28 inn, 2798 runs @ 111.92, HS 334, 13 centuries, 2 fifties
(2) George Headley: 20 tests, 37 inn, 2171 runs @ 65.78, HS 270*, 10 centuries, 5 fifties

(3) Mike Hussey: 19 tests, 31 inn, 1934 runs @ 80.58, HS 182, 7 centuries, 8 fifties

(4) Herb Sutcliffe: 20 tests, 31 inn, 1927 runs @ 68.82, HS 176, 7 centuries, 9 fifties
(5) Wally Hammond: 20 tests, 35 inn, 1919 runs @ 61.90, HS 251, 7 centuries, 5 fifties
(6) Viv Richards: 20 tests, 35 inn, 1890 runs @ 57.27, HS 232, 7 centuries, 6 fifties
(7) Doug Walters: 20 tests, 32 inn, 1889 runs @ 67.46, HS 242, 6 centuries, 11 fifties
(8) Frank Worrell: 20 tests, 33 inn, 1877 runs @ 64.72, HS 261, 6 centuries, 7 fifties
(9) Kevin Pietersen: 20 tests, 38 inn, 1865 runs @ 50.40, HS 158, 6 centuries, 7 fifties
(10) Arthur Morris: 20 tests, 32 inn, 1855 runs @ 63.96, HS 196, 9 centuries, 4 fifties

As for the fastest to 2000 runs, he can still be equal 2nd fastest with 66 in his next dig.....

Bradman: 22 innings
Headley: 32 innings
Sutcliffe: 33 innings
Walters & Lara: 35 innings

There was an article about this on Cricinfo which I cbf finding, which pointed out that although Hussey is averaging 80 or so, other batsman such as Sangakkara, Ponting and Kallis have been averaging thereabouts over the same period as part of the whole 'declining test bowling and flatter pitches' thing. It's just that Hussey hasn't had the previous years of averaging 40-50 to weigh his average down, and so has the much superior average.

Good point, but Hussey still comes out on top (just)….

Here are the leading averages (min 1000 runs) since Hussey’s debut….

Hussey: 19 tests, 31 inn, 1934 runs @ 80.58, HS 182, 7 centuries, 8 fifties
Yousif: 20 tests, 36 inn, 2498 runs @ 78.06, HS 223, 10 centuries, 6 fifties
Sangakarra: 21 tests, 34 inn, 2334 runs @ 77.08, HS 287, 8 centuries, 6 fifties
Ponting: 19 tests, 34 inn, 2106 runs @ 75.21, HS 196, 10 centuries, 9 fifties
Jayawardene: 22 tests, 36 inn, 2220 runs @ 65.29, HS 374, 8 centuries, 7 fifties
Kallis: 18 tests, 33 inn, 1777 runs @ 61.27, HS 186, 7 centuries, 8 fifties
Younis Khan: 21 tests, 40 inn, 2051 runs @ 56.97, HS 199, 6 centuries, 9 fifties
Hayden: 19 tests, 35 inn, 1776 runs @ 53.81, HS 153, 6 centuries, 6 fifties
Ganguly: 16 tests, 27 inn, 1323 runs @ 52.92, HS 239, 3 centuries, 5 fifties

Why is this drgging so much? Hussey needs to prove over time. When he nears his retirement. we can safely make assumptions whether he's the 2nd greatest or not.

Hussey has played what 1 series outside of Australia? and no series in the subcontinent. No matter how good hes been in those series, at the end of the day hes still far too unproven to be judged based on those series.
