Because he has a similar bowling action to Sarfraz Nawaz I believe.
Ah thanks. Never saw Sarfraz bowl, but Clark seems quite a bit better.

I do wonder though what would happen if a pair of batsmen really went after him.

India have no chance of saving this match now. They should really drop Wasim Jaffer for next match, bring in Sehwag, that will at least show some positive intent.

The problem with India is that no one honestly appraises the national team, and prepares meaningful pitches that will prepare its home team for overseas competitions.
India's abroad problem is over rated. They had a genuine problem in tests abroad but things are different from the 90s.

Even people like SilentStriker who are otherwise usually pretty objective have a blind spot when it comes to his home team - so far, I've seen only SJS who is somewhat objective and not overly emotional in his assessments. Then there're those like pup11 and Raghav who have pretty much completely given up on their own country and support someone else. Perfectly understandable - who wants the humiliation series in and series out?
There are a lot of Indian posters with alternate view points. Don't know why you think they do not appraise the Indian team properly because every one has different view points. If you asked Anil, he would give you one answer while if you asked Honestbharani, he will give you another answer. I am quite happy with the Indian posters over all on the site. We discuss cricket, have a lot of different opinions and have had some excellent discussions. Hardly fascist fans.

would get out.
Nah, dont think he is that good (though it does depend on the batsmen of course)

Kind of saw it in the second SL innings in Hobart when Sanga sort of got stuck in.

From what I remember Clark looked pretty helpless and ineffectual and went for over a 100.

Who knows? You may be right, but he seems too comfortable in his bowling sometimes, and it would be interesting to see what the result would be if a pair really got stuck in to him. What would his response be? Would he have one?

Really? Would have thought better of you than that Archie! :)

(this is a reply to your post prior to the one above, AM)

(and yes, replacement certainly sounds better)

Can anyone tell me why Clark is called Sarfraz?

Also, why dont more batsmen bat a little out of their crease to him?
Similar bowling actions (stiff upper bodies) and running styles (little, pitty-patty steps)

As for the feet position, batsmen should obviously try to put the bowler off, particularly when they're as accurate as Clark, by changing position. However, he's 6' 6" and when facing bowlers of that height most have a tendency to go back if anything because they give the impression of bowling from 20 yards not 22.

He also appears quicker than the speed gun as he hits the bat very hard

Basically, they should try something different but it's easier said than done

Thanks. Some enlightening comments for me to ponder.

I just assumed that batsmen should be trying more to break up the comfortable line and length he bowls because 130kph is not really all that difficult a pace to handle for test level batsmen.

But yes, that height and probable gain off the pitch would make things difficult indeed.

You must be joking....I have not seen him(Safraz) bowl either....But for a long time he was considered better than Imran Khan and was Pakistan's main strike bowler in his era before Imran....I would think Stuart Clark has a fair way to go before he could be even considered on par with or better than Safraz, IMO.

Perhaps someone can bring Safraz Nawaz's stats up for us...

Don't forget people always said the same thing about McGrath and attacking him. It's simply not that easy to attack someone who bowls in the corridor on a length consistently, and does it at reasonable pace and with height to back it up. Chances are if you try and go after Clark you're going to get out, especially if he's getting anything in the air or off the wicket like today.

Not that impressive Jason. I know them off the top of my head.

Something like 170 odd wickets in 50 odd tests. Not that flash. Although I do think he is under-rated by some.

Fwiw, Clark already seems better than Sarfraz in my opinion.

Although, Sarfraz does get credit for discovering reverse swing.
