Indian coach - Gary Kirsten

I think BCCI should've thought of/ might want to think of Paddy Upton as the real coach.

To spare others the trouble of googling, Paddy Upton is a sports shrink who once scored an FC ton and who Kirsten wants as mental conditioning coach. Which I thought was much of Kirsten's job.

If we are not there already, we'll see soon a test XI being backed by a coaching XI.

There is nothing wrong with that Kirstin is proposing. Players like Kallis have nothing but praise for the man, and that's good enough for me.

What, I might ask, is wrong with that?
Nothing, except we should not be then surprised that international cricketers behave like pampered prima donnas after you mollycoddle them thus. It wasnt always like this (which doesnt make it wrong) but the quality of cricket has not necessarily reflected the people-engineering that goes into it now.

Also be sure that one of the coaching XI will be an "appropriate dietary supplements" coach, not so sure about that one myself.

And like Kallis, any and all cricketers are quite free to engage his (or any other competent counsellor's) services of their own accord when large personal distractions and events are getting in the way of a good day in the office.

Nothng against Upton himself or the need to keep the players mentally focused. A bit confused on what Kirsten's own job is going to be. Coordinator of coaches? Coaching Sachin on how to play Brett Lee?

All of that actually. While you say the coaching Sachin part in jest, even the best players need someone to speak to them about their game in a critical fashion, if they see kinks appearing. And 4-5 coaches aren't too many - there is a lot of coordinating to do in the international game, and this frees up the players to focus on the game.

Upton’s proposed appointment is an interesting one for he use to be a hardcore disciplinary and would play bad cop as South Africa’s regimental fitness coach in the Woolmer and Cronje era. He worked wonders with the South African side and made them arguably the fittest side in world cricket but his less than diplomatic ways and continual push for excellence may cause a potential conflict with team India’s ethos of firstly having a nonchalant attitude to fitness but secondly a strong dislike for any form of criticism. Paddy has since gone on and worked with impoverished kids from the Cape and apparently has mellowed out but I’m not sure the old guard will like his approach. Although, the young guys should take to him.

Whatever it takes!!!
Not so fast dear...It is not Indian Cricket if everything goes smoothly.

Coach timing all wrong, say seniors

"There was absolutely no need for a coach at this moment. We're happy with the current support staff (Lalchand Rajput, Venkatesh Prasad and Robin Singh). We have a high comfort level with them and in any case this being our last tour of Australia, we don't need someone to motivate us or tell us what we're supposed to do,.....We have an issue with the timing of his appointment. Gary undoubtedly was a good player but when a new coach takes over it takes time for a team to warm up to him. He'll come with his set of ideas which may, or may not be in sync with us. And Australia isn't the right place for all that to happen. Ideally, they should have appointed him after the tour of Australia when the South Africans are here for a full Test tour....."

lol, this is out of the blue, AFAIC.

I never thought that Ravi and Sunny would be out of sync with the senior players....

I bet they are. Robin Singh is not only making money under false pretences but his a dream for any player who has a revulsion for training.

And no doubt Kirsten’s appointment will be used as the rationale by senior Indian players when they comfortably lose the test series against Aus. Or if India somehow shocks the world and impresses, Kirsten’s involvement would have nothing to do with it.

What i can understand from this so called statement made by a senior player is that they were happy with the lack of a coach in the side who can manage things with a certain degree of authority and the freedom they got from that, so basically in a sense these seniors were running the Indian team.
But then how good a choice is Kirsten, he was a good player but what are his credentials as a coach does he have any previous coaching experience or have India just picked a candidate out of the blue.

Well dont really know that but what is special there in the foreign coaches in sub-continent. Locals are not even considered for the job in the first place .
For me the reason should be that so many locals might be willing to get the job and if one gets it then the others might not like him there .

So what are Kirsten's credentials as a coach ?

Too many cooks spoil the broth. But many hands make light work.

Oh, what to beleive?
Number of hands doing the work has been fixed to XI per side through long established regulation. Ergo, would have to be the alternative.

Indian fielding has never been too good, but not getting worse of late (and was markedly improved in the T20I world cup). Hard to believe what you said about Robin Singh.

On Kirsten's appointment, we shoudl note clearly that they were working with the arrangement they were given (manager, bowling coach, fielding coach) and doing considerably well after the WC debacle, except the ODI series in England. Why blame them for not welcoming a sudden change in arrangements in this situation?

The coach job is a recent addition in international cricket. We should have an open mind about a mental fitness coach, but by the same token have the same open mind about not really adding more staff when things are going OK.

Someone's already getting in his excuses used by the more simplistic-minded Australians about Greg Chappell...
