I understand that he's supposed to have been a brilliant commentator in the past, but in the last 5 years or so (the period in which I've actively watched Test cricket) he's done little but tell the viewer exactly what I can already see on the television. Most of his commentary is along the lines of "Australia need a wicket", or "cracking shot"; with no depth beyond that.

So the reason I'm vocally anti-Benaud is because in my opinion he adds absolutely nothing to the game for the viewer, and I'd gain the same idea of what's going on by watching with the TV on mute as with him providing the commentary.

Lol, I'll never forget Cozier after the first Twenty20 championship match after Gayle's innings:

'That was one of the greatest knocks in any form of the game'

I can't believe he got past the first round or that he's competing with Benaud here. They're not in the same league.

These are the only two decent commentators that have got very far in this battle. It's probably a generation thing, but I much prefer the older style commentating to the pompous ranting of the newer brigade.

Benaud (for the time when he was great)

Indeed. There's no way that we can take this competition seriously anymore. Ideally, we'd have an Arlott-Benaud showdown.

As it is, though, my vote goes to Richie.
