England's ODI lineup after World Cup

It's quite easy to just drop a whole bunch of players, but it's only wise to do so if you have better players to choose from. For example, if Zimbabwe dropped players for not performing to the standard that Australia set with their selection policy, everyone in the country would get a run before long.

In saying that though, I'm sure England can find better one day cricketers than Vaughan, Strauss and Mahmood.

And Plunkett, and Joyce (the opener).

And probably Anderson and Bell too, TBH. Though clearly they should not be dropped right now.

And Panesar playing ODIs right now is nothing short of stupid either IMO.

Vaughan is arguably a better spin bowler than Panesar in ODIs and may manage to retain his place in the side because of that. IMO despite his new found over the top scoring against WI, which came a bit too late, he should focus the rest of his career in tests.

As it stands if i see Mahmood or Plunkett in either form of the game this summer, im going to lose considerable interest in the game, and i've already lost quite a bit since our last Ashes and the rather poorly organised world cup. As it stands, this world cup i havent even watched half as many games as i've watched in past world cups.

I say let that young lad Broad play more. That way he can develop into a fine cricketer as opposed to the other method of plonking him in when he's 25 and much more set in his bowling routines.

What have they got to lose?

Who should be dropped?

Less than some would have you believe.

Bell should open - his overall record in odi's is better than most of our top order guys, and he should only improve with time. I'd like to see Bopara kept at 3, where I thought he looked as assured as anyone we've seen there for a while until he ran himself out, and he'll normally manage a faster scoring rate than we saw against WI, I reckon. 4, 5 & 6 probably unaltered, even though Fred looks about 2 places too high at the moment. We all know he can bat better than that, and we're hopefully just seeing the after-effects of a truly rotten winter.

The keeper's a hard one to call. If you take the view that we're building for the next WC, then obviously Nixon goes. If you want the side to gain a bit of confidence from actually winning some games, then he stays. I'd favour the latter for now. From the quicks, Anderson stays although I thought his WC was actually pretty disappointing. The merit choice for the other opening bowler at present is probably Jon Lewis, as opposed to picking a kid who might be good in a couple of years' time. That being said, Plunkett did well in Aus when he had a run in the side, and I don't think we should judge him too much after his one-off game against WI. Broad will probably have what it takes in a year or so.

I don't think Panesar should be the spinner. He had a poor WC and, more imprtantly, I worry what the odi's are doing to his overall game. I couldn't tell you who the spinner should be though. No-one we've tried over the last few years has been very good, apart from Giles, and I can't see him being fit very often right now. And I don't think Vaughan's an option at number 7, unless he's capable of reinventing himself to a degree I can't begin to imagine.

Which only leaves the opener. Despite his 70odd against WI, Vaughan's track record tells its own story. Luckily, we have a couple of months until the next round of odi's, so here's hoping someone in the shires steps forward. What follows isn't a definite suggestion, just a possibility. And a biased one, coming from a Surrey man. A lot of people are talking about Benning, but I think his opening partner may be a more likely bet. Newman's good enough to average 46 in the FC game, and his game is ideally suited to the oneday game, but his List A performances have suffered from him batting down the order to accomodate Ali Brown opening. This summer he's opening again, and if he shows form over the next couple of months he may be worth a shout.

Failing that, I'd be happy to see Trescothick as a oneday specialist.

So you'd rather go into a OD match without a spinner and having to rely on Vaughan for 10 overs?.
Or perhaps another specialist bowler? Panesar is a poor ODI bowler and lacks variation, simple really. Vaughan bowled much better than him.

And the specialist bowler would be?.
No-one knows. Broad I guess, although it's far from ideal and I'd much rather see him have a solid season in county cricket. Giles and Blackwell are always options, although Giles's chances of making it to the next world cup are slim, and Blackwell's domestic performances suggest that his good international bowling record is just a ticking timebomb of mediocrity.

Not sure, I'm not the most knowledgeable about potential England players, mainly because I have never seen them play. There will be a few bowlers doing the rounds in the domestic circuit who are contenders though, of that I have no doubt.

Rashid is the name on everybody's lips, although he's still very young. I reckon the best OD spinner in the country is probably Ian Salisbury

Mind you, I'd be tempted (in a rather biased manner) to tout James Tredwell as one for the future. He's coming back into some form with both bat and ball.

Blackwell is never going to be an option TBH.

There really ain't many great OD bowlers in domestic cricket - it's a simple as that!!!!.The best of the bunch in fast bowling terms are probably Tom Smith,James Kirtley and Darren Gough. TBH there are no spinners in the domestic scene who I would back to make a great impact on the International stage.
