Anyone heard of Rajesh Powar or Manoj Tewari?.

Heard of Tiwari.....rated by many as India's best young batsman. We'lll have to see whether he cuts it at the highest level though.

Amused that the Indians still are afraid to drop Tendulkar from their test side.
And Kaif not being in either team is a bit of a joke tbh.

Can't beleive Sehwag kept his spot in the ODI side, how pathetic is that? Disappointed that Sachin and Sourav miss out, depth building I suppose. Mohammad Kaif deserves to be in there, selectors are obviously not too fond of him at the moment.

Test squad is pretty woeful, only one specialist opener which means they are going to be playing Dinesh Karthik as a pure batsman. Stupid move IMO, surprised that they kept Sachin in their still. Be hoping for Yuvraj to make good use of this opportunity.

Utterly shocked at the exclusion of Ramesh Power in the ODI squad. He has easily been the spinner with the best strike rate in the last year (whenever he got a chance). Recent domestic form shows him developing his batting too, useful lower order stuff.

Equally shocked at the inclusion of Dinesh Mongia. Rather have picked Kaif, ar even Irfan Pathan., as the middle order bat. With Yuvraj and Sehwag, his part time bowling is not so much of an asset.

Its Pawar. He is a left arm spinner, originally from Mumbai but couldn't make there since Nilesh Kulkarni was established. He can also bat quite well, at least at the domestic level.

Seriously, what has Mohammad Kaif done to deserve this treatment from the selectors? It's ridiculous really, the guy has potential to be the next Indian captain in both Test's and ODI's if he can get himself established but the selectors just aren't giving him the time of day.

I think Kaif is a very good player but having been dropped he hasnt set the domestic circuit on fire to strongly push his case.

And he doesnt have people burning effigies and blockading parliament to enable him to make a come back inspite of modest show a-la Saurav.

not really. I think the big 4 of the middle order will retain their places and Yuvraj will come in at 7. So DK will be doubling up as keeper and opener. Dhoni has not been good at all with the bat and as a keeper, DK is better. So I think it was on the cards anyways that Dhoni may not retain his test spot.

Kaif had a poor first-class season but he was impressive in the shorter format. I am thrilled for Tiwary but I feel bad for Kaif and especially Badrinath.

Powar is certainly India's first-choice one-day spinner. Chawla and Powar in tandem would have been awesome but I don't see India playing two specialist spinners too often. Let's hope Chawla makes the most of this opportunity.

Did Mongia really deserve to get dropped? I don't think so. He's scored plenty of runs in domestic cricket and I don't have a problem with him getting a shot.

Well, he didn't exactly score plenty but apparently, the fact that not many of these youngsters can bowl that well influenced his selection. Balance sakes, I guess. Not agree with it, but that seems to have been the reasoning.

That, and the fact that Shastri is a big fan of Dinesh Mongia.

Really? I think they will pit Karthik against Dhoni to choose the first-choice keeper for England. Suppose they both do well? You never know .. we might see Karthik opening for good, instead of Gambhir and Sehwag.

yeah, but if Yuvraj does well in the ODIs (as he should) then he can't be kept out of the test XI and leaving out someone like Laxman or Ganguly is not exactly on the cards... I think Dhoni will be the casualty.... Unless Dravid decides to open, that is.

Just checked his first-class season and ... well, let's not go there. He did average 60 at a S/R of 80 in 6 OD matches though.

yeah, and I think INdia are keen on having him for the Twenty20 WC, given his rather vast experience (relative to other Indian players) in that format of the game... So maybe they just want to keep him around and in good nick for that... Plus, his bowling can always come in handy..

So how's this for the first ODI?

Uthappa, Gambhir, Mongia, Yuvraj, Dravid, Tiwary, Dhoni, Chawla, Zaheer, Sreesanth, Munaf

EDIT: Switch Dravid and Mongia? Tiwary up the order? Karthik gets a chance?

^Mongia at three is OK I think. Dravid can bat pretty well down the order/at the death, not sure about Mongia.

I'm interested to see how Tiwary does in this series. Also really pleasing to see that Uthappa hasn't been discarded after the WC.

I would switch Tiwary and Mongia, tbh. Youngsters need to bat at a position from where they can take their time, get settled and then bat normally. Middle order is the tougher position and you need your experienced hands there, for ODIs, I mean. Yuvi to bat at 4 because he is our best batsman and he needs as much time as he can get, but given how suspect he is outside the offstump to the new ball, he can't bat any higher than that, really.
