From what I saw: Large amount of Roma fans bang on the clear plastic seperating the fans, taunting the other side. United fans in turn respond. Italian police pour down the United side only and beat anyone in the vicinity. People are beaten until they are on the ground, then beaten more. People on their own seemed to be targeted with battons while those in groups tended to be just pushed backwards. Weird way of dealing with things.
It was evident that in the event of any trouble, utd fans were going to get it. All the police were on the united side of the perspex, none on the roma side. Now you cant be effiently policing the crowd if you only have access to 10% of it.....

My dad was at the match, will have to see what he says tomorrow......

Not the smartest of things charging almost unbreakable 'plastic' sheets, especially if there is several hundred armed Italian policeman in front of you…

According to most reports it would seem the trouble extended from the a missile throwing competition both sets of ‘supporters’ were partaking in with Paul Scholes sending off being the catalyst. Can not say I have much sympathy for either set of ‘fans‘, you decided to exchange missiles and by dicking around you shouldn’t expect European police forces to be as forgiving as are old boys. Although, I must say it was a brutal beat down, no getting video cameras out here just a straight forward head kicking for the oncoming idiots. AS Roma 'fans' must have been laughing their head off in the relative comfort of their end.

Good result also, they will fancy their chances of scoring at Old Trafford.

Must say great result for Valencia as well considering a significant number of their team is either banned or injured, be really hard for Chelsea at the Mestalla.

United fans were udoubtedly in the wrong, what pisses me off is that none of the Roma fans got beaten up either. And wherever you go, beating a guy over the head with those things when he's already down is going way OTT.

Given the circumstances, brilliant result for us IMO, I'd back us to go through now. Brown really surprised me and was magnificent throughout, Ronaldo was ofcourse brilliant, especially in the 2d half, and Carrick played admirably especially after Scholes let him down and got sent off.

From what i've heard the Utd fans were chucking back what was launched at them. My dad was in the upper section, so away from it all, but the person he was sat next to on the plane said he didnt watch any of the match, he couldnt take his eyes away from the air above him due to the number of coins and such coming over the perspex.

As for security outside the ground, well, you know, if you travel on your own dont expect much protection. The official utd traveling fans had police ******s everywhere, were dropped off right outside the entrance, whisked away straight to the airport etc. The police cant watch every person in Rome at once..... Its just mad that they conduct themselves fantastically throughout the day, only to go OTT when the TV camera's roll.....

First hand account of the Roma-Man Utd match:

This included the Roma fans burning flares but we shouldn't hold our breath and expect UEFA to fine them because they're not English.
Anyway, the game started off brightly with both sets of supporters being vocal. However, as soon as Scholes got sent off, the atmosphere changed measurably which really hit an absolute low when Roma scored. Just to paint the scene- we were in a corner of the ground with Roma fans to each side of us, separated by a perspex fence. To the right of us, United fans were allowed to sit right up against the fence. To the left of us, a 20 yard gap (minimum) of seats were between us and the perspex fence which the Roma fans were the other side of. Now to anyone, that shows that the police know there are troublemakers sitting in that section of the ground or they would let United fans sit right up against that fence too. Baring that in mind, they had not a single member of the police force in the Roma section. So when Roma scored, the fans in that section came charging over to the travelling reds taunting us, being abusive, hurling some pretty dangerous missiles at us and trying to climb over the fence. Nothing was done. In retaliation, a couple of United fans went over to the fence and made some gestures (absolutely no attempt to climb the fence). Said fans then walked AWAY from the fence and back towards the United fans when a couple of the riot police took batons to him and beat him until he was on the ground. This is when it all kicked off. The riot police then completely lost the plot, and just starting to beat people literally at random (which included the elderly, women, children and disabled). I can vividly remember seeing one of the riot police hitting the same man over and over again who was on the floor and pleading for mercy. I also remember seeing two of the United security guys trying to carry one guy up the steps who had blood literally pouring out of his head. He got halfway up the stairs, and just collapsed. The situation then escalated further when Roma fans continued to throw even more missiles into the United end and unfortunately, when a few were returned, the police then attacked in a massive wave, forcing hundreds of United fans to run/tumble down the steps to try and get away from the attack. 2 tear gas bombs then followed. Meanwhile, the riot police still continued to turn their backs on the Roma fans and let them do pretty much whatever they liked. This continued through half time and after that, things calmed down slightly. We thankfully didn't see any more attacks by the police but it certainly made for a much more subdued atmosphere as the carnage left from this ludicrous attack was surveyed. To me, they were looking for an excuse to use violence against United fans as the original fans who approached the fence to gesture to the Roma fans were walking AWAY so if the police hadn't got their batons out, the situation would have petered out. The police were just extremely violent and extremely cowardly in equal measures. The rest of the game passed in a more low key fashion (although the referee continued to incense the travelling reds with his baffling inconsistancy and possibly unfair decisions although Rooney's goal did serve to lift spirits a bit). After the game, we were kept back for almost an hour and three quarters inside the ground (which nobody dared to question due to the continuing presence of the riot police) and moods were somewhat sated by the playing of the 1999 Champions League Final on the big screen in the ground which United had brought over for us to stop us from getting too bored. When we were finally let out, we had a wall of riot police either side of us as we made our way back to the coaches. We were sat on the coach park for another 30 minutes as the police got together yet another one of their ludicrous police ******s to the airport (every single coach had to have a police van between them so you can imagine how much slower that made everything).
We got to the airport and were greeted by yet more riot police both outside and inside the terminal (another wall of them meant we could only walk straight to our gate). Once through security, we saw yet more police milling around and the extent of what had happaned was becoming every more apparent as the amount of people who were waiting to fly home who had their heads in bandages or dried blood on their faces was shockingly large. It was people of all ages, gender and ethnicity too. We then had another frustrating wait at our gate to board and when we went through the gate and found out that we had to be bussed to our plane (which was a maximum of a minute journey), we found we had a police ****** for that too!! We arrived at our plane and guess what? There was a police van waiting there aswell just in case we all decided we wanted to start a riot whilst walking up some steps onto a plane!! Ludicrous overreaction anyone?!

SSN interviewed an Italian journalist today (though he sounded English) and he said he'd spoken to a few people in Italy, and he said the general feeling was that the riot police were itching to do what they did last night. Wankers of the highest order.

Surely between Italy and Turkey now for the worst fans in Europe?

Not saying English fans are perfect but we've not killed a policeman or stabbed a travelling foreign fan for awhile.

Roma on fire tonight, playing both Manchester United and Chelsea at the same time, yet conceding only two goals.

EDIT: Almost on cue, Vucinic levels the scores. Unbelievable scenes as 11 men are standing up to 21.
Considering he has been injured for much of the season since his move from Lecce when they got relegated, it is only his second goal for the club. Not a bad way of going about it.

IMO I hope those involved on both sides get banned for life. Maybe give them a bit of jail time to sort them out.

Yeah, if 10% of the stuff that happens in Greece (IMO they are right up there, especially the big three Athens clubs) or in Turkey or elsewhere happened in England, you English would be banned from every form of European Competition for the next century 8-)

I mean God forbid what would happen if that riot in Athens recently happened at an EPL game...

Didn't play like a guy just back from injury, that's for sure. His runs were fantastic, was fearing him far more than any other Roma player on the pitch.

Depends who you speak to but several United fans that SSN interviewed said that the Roma fans were fine during the day leading up to the game, and then became totally different people once the game had started.

But yes, Italy have had a lot of crowd trouble lately, Roma had a CL game abandoned a couple of years ago due to a missile to the head of a ref, Dida got hit by a missile recently too.

Maybe our fans will be now known as the worst? 2 bust ups with the police in 2 days is doing our continental repuation no good.

Loony BoB

2 bust ups in 2 days, maybe, but it comes down to who is at fault for the bustups. It could just be a xenophobia against English teams amongst certain groups of European fans.

These are the same away fans that travel around England for Premiership games, yet there's rarely issues there (that I know of).
