First hand account of the Roma-Man Utd match:
This included the Roma fans burning flares but we shouldn't hold our breath and expect UEFA to fine them because they're not English.
Anyway, the game started off brightly with both sets of supporters being vocal. However, as soon as Scholes got sent off, the atmosphere changed measurably which really hit an absolute low when Roma scored. Just to paint the scene- we were in a corner of the ground with Roma fans to each side of us, separated by a perspex fence. To the right of us, United fans were allowed to sit right up against the fence. To the left of us, a 20 yard gap (minimum) of seats were between us and the perspex fence which the Roma fans were the other side of. Now to anyone, that shows that the police know there are troublemakers sitting in that section of the ground or they would let United fans sit right up against that fence too. Baring that in mind, they had not a single member of the police force in the Roma section. So when Roma scored, the fans in that section came charging over to the travelling reds taunting us, being abusive, hurling some pretty dangerous missiles at us and trying to climb over the fence. Nothing was done. In retaliation, a couple of United fans went over to the fence and made some gestures (absolutely no attempt to climb the fence). Said fans then walked AWAY from the fence and back towards the United fans when a couple of the riot police took batons to him and beat him until he was on the ground. This is when it all kicked off. The riot police then completely lost the plot, and just starting to beat people literally at random (which included the elderly, women, children and disabled). I can vividly remember seeing one of the riot police hitting the same man over and over again who was on the floor and pleading for mercy. I also remember seeing two of the United security guys trying to carry one guy up the steps who had blood literally pouring out of his head. He got halfway up the stairs, and just collapsed. The situation then escalated further when Roma fans continued to throw even more missiles into the United end and unfortunately, when a few were returned, the police then attacked in a massive wave, forcing hundreds of United fans to run/tumble down the steps to try and get away from the attack. 2 tear gas bombs then followed. Meanwhile, the riot police still continued to turn their backs on the Roma fans and let them do pretty much whatever they liked. This continued through half time and after that, things calmed down slightly. We thankfully didn't see any more attacks by the police but it certainly made for a much more subdued atmosphere as the carnage left from this ludicrous attack was surveyed. To me, they were looking for an excuse to use violence against United fans as the original fans who approached the fence to gesture to the Roma fans were walking AWAY so if the police hadn't got their batons out, the situation would have petered out. The police were just extremely violent and extremely cowardly in equal measures. The rest of the game passed in a more low key fashion (although the referee continued to incense the travelling reds with his baffling inconsistancy and possibly unfair decisions although Rooney's goal did serve to lift spirits a bit). After the game, we were kept back for almost an hour and three quarters inside the ground (which nobody dared to question due to the continuing presence of the riot police) and moods were somewhat sated by the playing of the 1999 Champions League Final on the big screen in the ground which United had brought over for us to stop us from getting too bored. When we were finally let out, we had a wall of riot police either side of us as we made our way back to the coaches. We were sat on the coach park for another 30 minutes as the police got together yet another one of their ludicrous police ******s to the airport (every single coach had to have a police van between them so you can imagine how much slower that made everything).
We got to the airport and were greeted by yet more riot police both outside and inside the terminal (another wall of them meant we could only walk straight to our gate). Once through security, we saw yet more police milling around and the extent of what had happaned was becoming every more apparent as the amount of people who were waiting to fly home who had their heads in bandages or dried blood on their faces was shockingly large. It was people of all ages, gender and ethnicity too. We then had another frustrating wait at our gate to board and when we went through the gate and found out that we had to be bussed to our plane (which was a maximum of a minute journey), we found we had a police ****** for that too!! We arrived at our plane and guess what? There was a police van waiting there aswell just in case we all decided we wanted to start a riot whilst walking up some steps onto a plane!! Ludicrous overreaction anyone?!
