McMeekin & Pickup dominate as Black start tour strongly.
On a sunny Brisbane day, QLD captain Jimmy Maher won the toss and sent CW Black in on a cracked pitch, hoping to grab some early scalps. James Stedman answered the call, as did Andrew Cloete, but skipper Dan Smith and his deputy Ash Chaulk steadied the ship. Smith was eventually dismissed for 62, Chaulk soon followed for 46, and the shi was looking a little shaky yet again. Up stepped McMeekin. The debutant proceeded to smash the QLD bowling, and along with Zac Gelman, helped the side to a massive first innings total. Gelman eventually fell for 94, 6 short of a well deserved hundred, which also ended a 186 run partnership. From here on "Meeks", as he is known amongst the squad, treated the bowlers with disdain, and carved himself an amazing 169* from 153 balls before he was left stranded. 481 runs and a star unearthed looked a good start to the tour for Black.
Patrick picked up Broad early, but the Black bowlers for the most part, lacked penetration. Maher scored 93 before Gelman had him edging to Smith in the gully, and Hartley 96 before he left a large gap between his bat and bad, losing his off peg. The star of the show, though, was undoubtedly Neil Pickup. The CW veteran and test team vice-captain bowled 28 overs of leg-spin magic, knocking out the middle and lower order with 6-114. Derspite his best efforts though, the other bowlers struggled and QLD were eventually dismissed for 404. A little more than Black would've liked.
77 runs ahead, Black set out to build a large lead. Fast run scoring throughout the match afforded them some time, though that didn't help Smith as he was bowled by Bichel for a 5 ball duck. Stedman went cheaply again and Cloete knocked the ball around casually for 45. Chaulk and Armstrong, however, had other ideas. They both played with brilliant fluency and took the total past 200 before falling within 6 runs of each other. Chaulk for 74 and Armstrong for 76. Up stepped McMeekin... again. The youngster again partnered Gelman in taking the total to 400, this time with a 139 ball 117, before being trapped in front by Kasprowicz. The score was declared at 400 and QLD had just over a day to make 477.
The chase started badly for QLD, with Patrick and Su removing an opener each, both for first ball ducks, to reduce the side to 2/0. Love and Perren rebuilt with a 65 run stand, but were ultimately outclassed by some good bowling. Despite some desperate fight from the lower order, Pickup again dominated with 5/77 and Patrick took 2/18, while everyone else chipped in, as the Bulls were bundled out for 266, and Black celebrated their first victory of the tour. "Meeks" was the undoubted man of the match, despite Pickup's heroics.
