yeah, no...atleast bangladesh is better than india pakistan at it....plus they have a good chance winning the next world cup if, IF things keeping going forward like it is now, may be if it speeds up a little bit.

the other countries are going to get competitive but not going to win it, look at soccer only seven have won in 18 world cups

A more apt question would be "when will a current minnow team be a real threat in a WC", and the answer to that IMO is 2011. Can't possibly predict who will win this far out, let alone whether or not Ireland will be good enough to win a WC in 2027.

I've been impressed with he minors thus far Zim, Canada and of course Bangladesh have looked good against the big 8, Irelands win over Pak and taking it to the wire with Zim will inject exposure of the game in the UK (outside England). So Im sure by 2011 WC the super 8 teams will treat them with alot more caution and respect.

The last option. I can't see a minnow ever winning. If they do win, I wouldn't call them a minnow at all. Bangladesh might win in, say, 2015 - but only if they are one of the top eight teams at the time.

If you mean when will one of today's minnows ever win a world cup... not sure, but I suppose Bangladesh will be the best option. 2015 might be a bit early, though.

A substandard side will never win the World Cup, that much is patently obvious.

When will a side which is currently substandard win the Cup? About as possible to guess as it is to guess when the first man will land on Mars. And frankly, who gives a flying? Teams will get better when - and, this is the vital thing, if - they get better - there's no point guessing when that's going to be.

Some teams, meanwhile, are never going to be ODI-standard teams. For differing reasons, I can't ever see any of Ireland, Scotland or Bermuda being so.

Ireland will sleep there way to being a ODI-standard side. Watch the influx of fringe FC cricketers doing a Bray and Johnston and marry Irish chicks so they can play ODIs. Also it should be noted that Scotland, Ireland, Holland and Denmark have been producing FC crickets. Most of them might just be average ones, but still they have been good enough to FC contracts.

But Scotland and Ireland are part of the cricket team known as "England". Every Scotsman and Irishman who's ever got good at cricket has wanted to and has played in and for England. It's just a historical misnomer that the cricket team called "England" is not called "The British Isles". The latter would be a much more accurate reflection of the truth.

Really before Pakistan and Sri Lanka got Test status you could have said the same thing about their players and India. If Scotland or Ireland ever got Test Status then most of them would want to play for Ireland or Scotland. I remember Ed Joyce saying the only reason he wants to play for England is cus he can play Tests and regular ODIs.

Exactly - and the same thing has always been the case. In the 1930s most if not all Yorkshiremen would have played Tests for Yorkshire not England if Yorkshire had got Test status. But they didn't. And while all good Scottish players play for the team known as "England" things will stay as they are.

Pakistan was once part of India - and when it was future-Pakistanis played for India. As soon as the geographical split happened, the split in players did. Difference is, Scotland and Ireland have never been separate from the British Isles. In cricketing terms, they've always been one and the same.

Was Sri Lanka ever part of India?

When did the split happen? The same time as India\Pakistan, or before, or after?

I'm genuinely interested now.

Scots want to play for England?

And have done - many, many times.

Because in reality, they're not playing for England - they're playing for The British Isles.

Ceyon (Sri Lanka) in theory was a separate state, basically we ran our own show. It was just a state of British Indian Empire. But when India got indepence so did Pakistan and Sri Lanka. I know Bangladesh was part of Pakistan for a while. Not 100% sure about Nepal and Afghanistan, i think they were both India and Pakistan respectiviety for a bit longer. I could do some research to find the exact details if you want.
