White is in the side as a batsman? Yet he has only scored 1 score of more then 15 I believe in his whole ODI career. He doesn't bowl leg spin, only googlies, and probably the only thing that I can think of that is keeping him in the side is his catching maybe.

Surely the selectors, if they think he is a future great player, could let him mature in the First Class arena then bring him back. A mature first class batman (Jaques, Rogers, North) could fill that posistion a whole lot better and I would feel a whole lot more comfortable knowing White wasn't coming in.

Unfair on Watson because he actually showed some ability for Australia and has a future but Cameron White is currently nothing more than a ubber slogger who did well at Somerset batting on a road. All this talk about him being a decent bowler was a load of bull and that's even before you consider some people said he could be an option to replace Warne ( ). The guy isn't even trusted to bowl ten overs at the moment and his showed on two occasions now that his more than handy coming in for a quick slog in the direction of cow corner but given a situation and a bit of pressure and the only thing he will be doing is offering the wicket keeper some catching practice.
Not sure who's claimed he's a decent bowler. He's a servicable bowler on a turner but absolute fodder on anything else, and can't even be relied on to be accurate. On most wickets Andrew Symonds is a better spinner, though obviously because of his variations White would be more likely to take you wickets when the pitch turns. His record with the ball in domestic OD cricket pretty much bears this out, and until he's more accurate he'll never be a good ODI all-rounder, he'll be a batsman who can bowl well when conditions suit.

Anyway, he's not much more than a slogger with the bat, but he is quite handy in the late overs, and certainly clears the boundary better than most batsmen in world cricket. You wouldn't want to rely on him at 7 in the long term though, because he doesn't have much else to his game. Incidentally, he's also a fine fielder.

He can be a good ODI player in the future, but he's pretty one dimensional right now, and if everyone's fit he shouldn't be in the first team for the World Cup, though he will be in the squad. Don't really see the point in dropping him now, may as well give him the rest of this series to see what he can do, especially given there's still a couple of injured players who might not be available.

Yeah that's the key for me as well. He's in the team as a finisher, and he's very good at that role in the first innings setting a target with a platform, but he doesn't exactly fill you with hope when he comes in during a chase. Tonight you basically felt that Hussey was the last batsman.

Back to the cricket. I'm encouraged by tonights result in the fact that it highlights how frail and beatable Australia can be when they haven't got their minds on the job. The reason I'm so encouraged?: The Black Caps have found a new lease of life thanks to Vincent and Oram and have a star on the rise in Ross Taylor. Bond will realise and admit he just didn't try hard enough last game, Fleming is world-class and due, Fulton is slowly learning his game, McMillan is good for a run-a-ball score in the 80-100 range every now and then, Kyle Mills is a quality ODI bowler and the best Number 10 batsman the world's probably ever seen. Gillespie is a hard nut with a steely and determined approach. Vettori spooks the Aussies like they're watching "The Exorcist". Patel is a worthy deputy. McCullum is capable of anything on his day and unbelievable feats on his best days. And we haven't even had to use Scott Styris yet who's probably the most reliable and hardest nut in the side.
I strongly believe we will be a better one-day unit than Australia by the end of the Chappell-Hadlee and should be short odds to win the World Cup.

Did I mention Jacob Oram?

Interesting we posted the same stuff about White at the same time

See everyone gets in that mould "its too late to change it now lets wait till the BIGGEST odi tournament is over before we change things around" yet that is a big problem in our line up and for us to win the World Cup everything needs to be firing.

Its quite obvious that White is working for us at his current posistion in the batting line-up unless we bat first, then again he has only showed us one innings of "finishing". Why wait....we still have a couple more games to go, get rid of him and bring in a recognised batsman. No more stuffing around with all-rounders, extra bowlers, finishers. We have Symonds and Clarke to bowl the last 10 overs between them (and on their night they do a fantastic job). Bring in a speciallist batsman that will be able to add strength and even more depth to our batting and fill that vacant number 7 posistion.

*small rant over*

Its really unfair on tait isn't it?

I think its pretty unfair to say tait was rubbish today, yeah he didn't bowl well but still he was the most hostile out of aussie bowlers he rushed every batsman and his pace was always up there. It wasn't as if he was smashed he got his lengths wrong at the death and there were a lot of edges for four. But surely he will improve in the next game it was his debut so there were bound to nerves.

To be honest I never saw the point in bringing him into the side in the first place, particularly considering Shane Watson plays a very similar role and seems to be guaranteed a World Cup spot - personally I believe giving Brad Hogg or Dan Cullen or insert other Australian spin bowler here every second game would have developed the Australian side better. Just out of interest, who is the premier Australian ODI spin bowler as it surely can't be Hogg with one appearance in seven outings this series.

Just as an aside, White didn't bowl that badly today. Definitely his best spell at international level, though obviously that's not saying much. I'd expect him to get a few more overs in the games ahead, especially (obviously) if Symonds isn't playing.

Anyway, the reason there's no point in dropping him now is because this series was obviously viewed as a chance to give him an extended run, and there's only three games to go and no obvious replacement. There's no desperate need to test out anyone else because Watson will walk back into the team when he's ready, so this is a chance for White to show what he's capable of. He's not been an absolute disaster this series and isn't exactly costing us games, and with only three matches to go I really don't see the point of bringing in someone like Jaques and saying "bat at 7", or picking five bowlers and abandoning the balance we'll be using in the WC. White's got a role to play in the future of the team, so this is his exposure, similar to blooding Watson a few years ago, who was similarly inept in most areas at the time.

Australia aren't waiting until the last moment to fix a problem in the team, they're effectively creating a weaker spot in the team to give a guy a chance, which is a different issue. It's like giving Tait and Hilfenhaus a run.

It's Hogg. He'll be in the WC squad. Ponting confirmed today that there will be a specialist spinner in the team, and nobody else has been given a game. Hogg's bowling fairly well in domestic cricket this season too. I think he might play on Sunday anyway.

Bring back those guys...that's all that needs to be done. Lose White (very, very, very average cricketer, almost in the Shane Watson category ), Hodge and Tait. Pretty straight forward really.
White is a gun... he will be a future gun... just not ready yet i suppose... will get the rest of this series then when we play NZ in NZ for the chappell hadlee id reckon Watson would replace him...

In - Ponting, Lee, Johnson
Out - Hodge, Clark, Tait

however i think the selectors will go with

In - Ponting, Johnson
Out - Hodge, Clark

if Symo aint fit i guess Hodge gets another go.....at the G this time!

We're all thinking it, but it needs to be said anyway: Australia's answer to Dave Mohammed.

If we wanted to have an option for spin Brad Hogg is the go, he is our most genuine ODI spin bowler going around. Otherwise we have Clarke and Symonds chipping in bowling their part-timers.

Seems as though Bracewell's experiments resulted in a competent side eventually. Glad to see no mention at all of Hamish Marshall there.

I do believe we have a reasonable chance in the World Cup, especially once Styris returns and Mills regains full fitness - given the timing of the tournament both players should be fully fit by that time and with a few ODIs in the weeks leading up to it.

However I can't help but feel that much of our chances rests upon Fleming and I also believe he is due for form; surely he will eventually break this run of starts without any big score of note soon.

Yeah, it's easily Hogg, his not getting a game though is more to do with the fact that Watson's out, and the selectors wanting 4 seamers.

Yes I imagined that he would still be the most likely specialist spin bowling candidate though personally I feel it would be more worthwhile if he actually played in the XI a little more often. ;)

Edit: Cheers for the explanation Clappo.

I really am amazed after the interview that healy had with ponting. In the interview ponting said the conditions in west indies are pretty much like the sub-continent, and he went on to say that his team has all bases covered, with 5 pacers+watson+a spinner(probably hogg). Now what does he expects of hogg and watson that they come into a tournament like the world cup and straight away start performing.
