Obviously watson is the practical choice given the current scenario because if aussies play a team like they played today with 3 fast men and one spinner watson can then bowl decent 10 overs and open the batting which would let ozi's play 4 fast bowlers and one spinner with symo and clarke as chip in options.

Does anyone remember that Hayden was ranked by the ICC as the best ODI batsman in the world a few years ago? Criticism of him on this thread is way, way, way OTT and disrespectful of a great player frankly

No i don't mean that bring cosgrove now because at this point we would have to choose from either haydos or watson for the world cup to open as it is not fair on someone new to come into the side for the biggest tournament of them all the pressure to perform at such a stage could get better of them.I meant when cosgrove makes runs he is the best bet though it would be great if he losses some weight.

Hayden is in better form than other opening options in Domestic OD cricket no doubt (which isn't saying much tbh), but as i've said time & time again, Michael Clarke has previously done the Job opening, and if there are no other in form opening batsmen (which in this case there really isn't) he should get the job. Australia has middle-order batting stocks aplenty in the Ford Ranger cup. White, Voges, D Hussey, Birt, Bailey, Hodge, North are all in better OD form than Hayden is, and we'd lose little by opening with Clarke, and having any one of those names batting at 5/6/7.

Fiery mate nobody is denying he is great batsman you don't call him matt the bat without a reason, but his recent style of play is not of the hayden you are talking about he is grafting around circumspect about every shot he is playing, he just needs to plant his front foot forward and play the way he always used to do.Noone minds him getting out if he is trying to play positive shots because thats what makes(or made) him special or great.

He's just using the state of the game to get some time in the middle to regain some form. His timing is out and it's a perfect opportunity to fine-tune a bit

tbh this is his 5th chance to prove himself. He's so far done nothing to justify his place in the team, especially given he's had 4 targets that were below par to chase.

I really don't like the idea of clarke opening the batting because he is currently one of the best and consistent middle order bat in world cricket so i will not shuffle that middle order at all when world cup is just around the corner.

Nice response from England to Buchanan's latest whinge - an even feebler batting performance to ensure that Aus get even less batting practice, and then open with Plunkett ....

The joy of following England's onedayers. Those of us who argue for basing the team around the test players are rewarded with Strauss & Collingwood reminding us , yet again, that they just aren't up to it. Those who argued for oneday specialists have to get their heads around Loye's 3rd single figure score in two innings (that's 2 against NZ last time out and then today, in case you're wondering) and Nixon's continuing failure to do anything at all with the bat. The words "waste", "complete" and "time" spring immediately to mind.

We might as well get some chimpanzees to replace the english batsmen. We will get more of a game that way.

But in all seriousness, it has gotten beyond a joke. I have watched cricket on TV since I was 7 (1997) and I have never seen a worse team than the current England team. I reckon Zimbabwe and Bangladesh would put up a better show

All over. Ponting gets 50, thrashing of the highest order here. Johnson gets man of the match according to Nine.

camerawork was poor because the cameramen were sent to sleep by the quality of cricket on display.

Positives to come from the match?

-Brett Lee & Mitch Johnsons bowling
-Hoggy finally getting a game :D
-Ponting & Gilly looking in fine touch

Negatives:

-England, every freaking thing they did, including winning the toss & batting, can only be comparable to a small piece of whale poo imo

Aussies win by 9 wickets and thank god its over would be fun to hear what freddie has to say.

Unfortunately, it won't. You really hope the spectators give them some of the worst abuse imaginable, but they're probably still asleep.
