What the hell? Entertainment galore, typical Black Caps. From a New Zealand point of view I think there are quite a few positives to come out of the 2nd ODI in Queenstown.
Once again the New Zealand middle order batting was so incredibly pathetic that we have to rely on the bowlers to do the job for us.
Mark Gillespie bowled well, a beauty to dismiss Jayawardene. Michael Mason got taken apart at the death and Adams was pretty solid and should have been bowling in tandem with Gillespie at the end of the innings. Franklin was pretty average but did pick up a wicket at a fairly crucial time while Vettori was his reliable self. Fielding was very sharp with both the Marshall twins adding a very solid look to our inner ring.
McCullum got a poor decision from Steve Davies, James Marshall did well opening and it was good to see him getting runs but his run calling was very poor which resulted in the run outs of Ross Taylor and himself, as well as several opportunities early on. Peter Fulton again got out cheaply to a good ball but will be disappointed and should be benched for the next game. Craig McMillan had some good domestic form coming into this game and did deserve his spot but was unable to push for inclusion into the squad for the next 3 ODI's. Daniel Vettori shouldn't be batting above Hamish Marshall or Craig McMillan and didn't really make enough runs to justify him batting at #5. Excellent to see Hamish Marshall batting with some positive intent until he undid all his good work with a half hearted shot. James Franklin batted sublimely to guide the tail and he had good support from Mark Gillespie, who punched well above his weight.

The NZ bowlers who were rightly criticised after the last game came right here (at least some what better than last game - with the pitch definitely giving greater assistance to them in the first half of the day) and some decent batting by James Marshall and then Franklin at the end.
SL's problems have always been the 4th bowler and 5th bowler and their economy rates... ie how many runs do they leak that others like Murali and Vaas have to catch up on (or restrict to compensate) .... and it remains the same here .
Sanga's gem - was the highest ODI score at this ground - not surprising really, given the nature of this ground. He deserved a Century.
Some of SL's key batters are still struggling to find runs and Mahela and Marvan as well as Dilshan really need to stay in the middle long and get some runs to get some confidance and form. I am not sure if Dilshan is an asset to the Team given his struggle with poor form , which keeps some one else out of the side , although he can once in a while contribute with the ball and the occasional brilliant fielding - getting a bonus wicket .
I suspect SL will play the same Team at Christchurch, although Kapudegera must be a consideration in place of Dilshan or the struggling Marvan.

I agree, SL is playing its best side out there , so their inability to post bigger scores or forge wins ...highlights their weakness.Tim said:
I am looking forward to the return of Fleming, Bond and Mills +/- Styris to the ODI line up soon for some real good contests in the next 3 ODIs .

I think that game clearly showed how much S.L rely on Murali. NZ would have cruised to that total had he not supplied 10 overs yesterday.
And as has been mentioned, S.L are really struggling to find the 3rd seamer to partner Vaas and Malinga. Once those 2 finish their first spell, whoever bowls next is clearly being targeted. I think it might almost be worth them playing Bandara or another spinner.

Or NZ cricket does not think this series is that important .. ie they don't care what happens in this series so long as NZ puts out its best team for the Commonwealth Bank Series ..._Ed_ said:

Good news that Bond will be back, probably replacing James Franklin I would think. I hope Jeetan Patel does get a game or two at some stage during this tour, ideally he would play the next 3 but then that means we need James Franklin for his all round abilities.

Franklin is showing his worth with the bat but he's in the team primarily as a bowler. Right now, he's not really doing the job with the ball so im not sure he can keep someone like Oram out.
However he seems to be slowly developing so it may be worthwhile keeping him in the team for a lenghty amount of time to see if he really does take off with both bat and ball.

I think NZ has due respect for SL. SL are one of the most consistent ODI teams. However, the BCs are going to be seriously judged on their performance against AUS. The NZ media likes to take any opportunity to criticise the BCs - especially when they lose to AUS - irrespective of how AUS may be destroying other teams. And, after all, AUS are the reigning World Champs - and NZ's arch rivals in all sports.JASON said:
NZ should have dropped Fulton to give him a chance to play provincial cricket, in the hope he can play his way into form. Keeping him to be 12th man isn't any good for his technique or form.
Good on Franklin and the NZ bowlers. Keeping faith in players after one bad performance was always the best strategy, even if they had performed similarly in the second match. Hopefully Franklin's calmness with the bat rubs off on his bowling.

Franklin just doesn't know what to do in one day matches with the ball. He has tried steaming in off his long run and trying to swing the ball and he just gets hammered due to his poor accuracy. He has also tried coming in off a shorter run-up and bowling 125km/h cutters, but his accuracy still isn't great and he gets belted due to the distinct lack of pace or movement.Perm said:
Still, when he gets it right with the new ball, he can run through top orders, and his batting really seems to be developing at international level. If there is no place for him with the new ball, I think his bowling is pretty much useless though, so he probably shouldn't be in the side. But in saying that, he's a still a better option than Mason and even Adams IMO, even if you do ignore his batting.
