French Open finalist
Sven Oxenstierna has celebrated his return to clay well with a straight sets thrashing of Italy's
Michael De Kinsele. The former world number four, in his first match for nearly a month, stormed past the Italian 23-year old in just over an hour and a half in a solid outing. De Kinsele, who impressed in his first round win over
Mario Timko, was unable to produce similar form against the dominant CWLander who took just thirty minutes to wrap up the first set to love. Whilst the world number 137 put up a better fight in the second, he didn't have enough to stop Oxenstierna who advanced
6-0 6-3. The Ox now faces local
Becker Haas who overcame a scare to beat German qualifier
Dieter Bonhof in three sets.
Jamee Hancianu started off his campaign well with a straight sets win over Bulgaria's
Yordan Zakov, but will have his work cut out for him in the third round as he faces former world number one
Jason Hall. Hancianu was very impressive against the Bulgarian veteran; improving as the match progressed after being behind 0-3 in the first set. The teenager clawed back to even ground against the Bulgarian and raced through the second set with some dominant play to secure a
7-5 6-2 win. Meanwhile, top seed Hall started his tournament off very well by defeating Colombia's
Johan Ortiz in straight sets
6-2 6-2.
It was, however, a day of upsets in Hamburg and no player would be more disappointed with their loss than
Randy Smeltz. The tenth seed last week made the semifinals of the tournament in Stuttgart, and came into a Blanco-less draw feeling confident of making some waves. In his last meeting with
Sergio Joaquin, Smeltz prevailed in a tight three setter, and after the first set in Hamburg looked in a good position. But the Spanish 24-year old rallied to take the second set in a tiebreaker to leave the world number nineteen feeling uneasy. That unease was compounded as Joaquin took an early break of service in the decider to shoot ahead 3-1. The major criticism of Smeltz has been his inability to force the pace of matches, and he made no comeback as Joaquin eased to an impressive
4-6 7-6(3) 6-4. Joaquin now faces seventh seed
Dwayne Murdoch who disposed of
Valter Cordiero in straight sets.
Elsewhere, the tournament was in shambles as no less than five seeds fell first up. The biggest name was world number seven
Juan Moreno who fell in a tight three-set contest against
Oneil Stewart. The Argentine certainly got a rough draw against the talented Jamaican who advanced to a third round clash with
Patrick Pascaul 6-4 3-6 6-3. Elsewhere, the Varga Brothers had a bad day as they both exited in the second round; eighth seed
Zoltan Varga - a Wimbledon semifinalist - losing out in two tiebreakers to
Diego Hurtado. Meanwhile,
Janos Varga could not prevail in a three-hour epic encounter with
Davis Kennedy; the Canadian 27-year old advancing
5-7 7-6(2) 7-6(5). And in the biggest upset, talented Spaniard
Marc Carretero defeated twelfth seed
Almen Benaglio in straight sets.
- Seeded players out: Almen Benaglio; Jozsef Boros; Juan Moreno; Randy Smeltz; Zoltan Varga.

Jojo Mustard has started brightly in Indianapolis after walking away with a straight sets win against
Ninteh Doh. The Japanese veteran stuck with Mustard right throughout the contest, but the CWLander had the class to shake him off late in both sets to capitalise on the good form he created for himself in Manta last week. Mustard's
7-5 6-4 win gives him a really tough second round assignment against Wimbledon champion
Darcy Cowan who took three sets to defeat
Paolo Mandonna in his first tournament since winning the grass crown.
Rob Bowenburg would have hoped for a more convincing display against Aussie qualifier
Matthew Tobin, but a win is a win as he advanced in two hours and twenty-six minutes on an outside court. The Johannesburg and 's-Hertogenbosch quarterfinalist dropped the second set against the Australian and found himself in trouble at 3-3 in the third. But the aggressive CWLander managed to push on to take three of the last four games in a gutsy display; advancing to the second round
6-4 3-6 6-4. Bowenburg earlier this week suggested he could 'take' world number one
Daniel Paez Blanco in the second round, and tomorrow he will have his chance after the Spaniard accounted for CWLand qualifier
Scotland Rivers in straight sets. Rivers looked overawed by the big match occasion, and in the first set struggled to get any momentum as he was reduced to pushing the ball around and trying to keep it in play. That obviously didn't work for the exciting youngster, and he came out in the second set with more fire in his belly and was level at 5-5 with the best player in the world. But after scything a winner past Blanco to save one match point, he could not repeat his success as he put the next backhand into the net to hand Blanco the break and the match
6-1 7-5.
Finally, embattled big-man
Heath Davis ran out of gas against super-fit 36-year old
Jean-Alain Depuis. Davis managed to fire down a massive nineteen aces in the match, and was rewarded in the second set which he took 6-2. But the dogged Frenchman, who turns 37 in September managed to scrap his way back into the contest and take the decider to a tiebreaker. After over two and a half hours on court, Davis started to feel it against the barely-sweating Depuis who raced through the breaker to secure a
6-2 3-6 7-6(1) win. He now faces Croatia's
Miroslav Brdar who embarrassed an out-of-form
Tom Vollan the day before by handing him the double bagel. The big-serving Norwegian imploded on court as his first serve percentage dipped below forty per cent. Down 0-6 0-2, he seemed to give up completely as Brdar advanced
6-0 6-0.
Frustratingly for him, Serbia's
Danijel Micic failed to capitalise on his great
Davis Cup campaign as he bowed out in straight sets to
Wayne Boyd. Micic almost single-handedly won the tie for the Serbs in an awesome weekend of tennis, but wilted on the smaller stage against the local. The San Jose champion played good economic tennis as he watched Micic frustrate himself in a
6-1 7-5 upset. Elsewhere,
Morgan Carter made a massive comeback against
David Champion to advance to a second round clash with qualifier
Waylon Jones. Carter dropped the first set against the left-handed Aussie 1-6, and was staring at defeat after being broken in the first game of the second set. But the American came back authoratively to claim twelve of the last sixteen games to prevail
1-6 6-2 6-3 against the eighth seed.
- Seeded players out: David Champion; Danijel Micic.

CWLand's
Spas Delev has made a bright start in the Challenger in Penza after coming through a difficult first round clash with
Evgeniy Volkoff with a win. One of the tougher 'floating' players going around, Volkoff made life difficult for Delev throughout the match in front of his home crowd. The Russian took the second set 6-4 after breaking the Delev serve early and clinging on for dear life to send the match to a third. But there Delev had too much class and he came out with a
6-2 4-6 6-2 win to set up a clash with China's
Sheng Yiming. Qualifier
Randy Banks put up a brave showing against Poland's
Piotr Bak, but his first Challenger tournament ended valiantly in a tough loss. Banks dropped the first set tiebreaker 7-9 in what proved to be the difference between the two as the Pole edged out a tight
7-6(7) 4-6 6-3 win.
Elsewhere,
Haiku Morkel completed a shocking couple of days for the Norwegians as he followed
Kim and
Tom Vollan out of tournaments in the first round with a loss to
Joseph Tessier. The top seed cruised through the first set 2-6, before the French qualifier came back hard to secure an upset
2-6 6-4 6-3 win.
- Seeded players out: Adam Murray; Haiku Morkel; Vaclav Zeman.

Hmm... ouch for Smeltz and for Norway in general (though K Vollan played OK). Some massive upsets in Hamburg open that draw wide open. Henson/Charles match of the day? I think so.
