Stoked to have made the quarters, will be a massive boost for Maxums ranking. Also stoked to have given blanco a minor scare to be 2-0 up in the first, knew it wouldnt happen though, hopefully more big things to come.

German Hamburg Open
Second Round - Hamburg

Men's Singles (Seeds & Other Entrants - Seeds - Finals - Section 1 - Section 2 - Section 3 - Section 4)
Men's Doubles (Draw)

French Open finalist Sven Oxenstierna has celebrated his return to clay well with a straight sets thrashing of Italy's Michael De Kinsele. The former world number four, in his first match for nearly a month, stormed past the Italian 23-year old in just over an hour and a half in a solid outing. De Kinsele, who impressed in his first round win over Mario Timko, was unable to produce similar form against the dominant CWLander who took just thirty minutes to wrap up the first set to love. Whilst the world number 137 put up a better fight in the second, he didn't have enough to stop Oxenstierna who advanced 6-0 6-3. The Ox now faces local Becker Haas who overcame a scare to beat German qualifier Dieter Bonhof in three sets.

Jamee Hancianu started off his campaign well with a straight sets win over Bulgaria's Yordan Zakov, but will have his work cut out for him in the third round as he faces former world number one Jason Hall. Hancianu was very impressive against the Bulgarian veteran; improving as the match progressed after being behind 0-3 in the first set. The teenager clawed back to even ground against the Bulgarian and raced through the second set with some dominant play to secure a 7-5 6-2 win. Meanwhile, top seed Hall started his tournament off very well by defeating Colombia's Johan Ortiz in straight sets 6-2 6-2.

It was, however, a day of upsets in Hamburg and no player would be more disappointed with their loss than Randy Smeltz. The tenth seed last week made the semifinals of the tournament in Stuttgart, and came into a Blanco-less draw feeling confident of making some waves. In his last meeting with Sergio Joaquin, Smeltz prevailed in a tight three setter, and after the first set in Hamburg looked in a good position. But the Spanish 24-year old rallied to take the second set in a tiebreaker to leave the world number nineteen feeling uneasy. That unease was compounded as Joaquin took an early break of service in the decider to shoot ahead 3-1. The major criticism of Smeltz has been his inability to force the pace of matches, and he made no comeback as Joaquin eased to an impressive 4-6 7-6(3) 6-4. Joaquin now faces seventh seed Dwayne Murdoch who disposed of Valter Cordiero in straight sets.

Elsewhere, the tournament was in shambles as no less than five seeds fell first up. The biggest name was world number seven Juan Moreno who fell in a tight three-set contest against Oneil Stewart. The Argentine certainly got a rough draw against the talented Jamaican who advanced to a third round clash with Patrick Pascaul 6-4 3-6 6-3. Elsewhere, the Varga Brothers had a bad day as they both exited in the second round; eighth seed Zoltan Varga - a Wimbledon semifinalist - losing out in two tiebreakers to Diego Hurtado. Meanwhile, Janos Varga could not prevail in a three-hour epic encounter with Davis Kennedy; the Canadian 27-year old advancing 5-7 7-6(2) 7-6(5). And in the biggest upset, talented Spaniard Marc Carretero defeated twelfth seed Almen Benaglio in straight sets.

  • Seeded players out: Almen Benaglio; Jozsef Boros; Juan Moreno; Randy Smeltz; Zoltan Varga.

Indianapolis Tennis Championships
First Round - Indianapolis

Men's Singles (Seeds & Other Entrants - Seeds - Finals - Top Half - Bottom Half)
Men's Doubles (Draw)

Jojo Mustard has started brightly in Indianapolis after walking away with a straight sets win against Ninteh Doh. The Japanese veteran stuck with Mustard right throughout the contest, but the CWLander had the class to shake him off late in both sets to capitalise on the good form he created for himself in Manta last week. Mustard's 7-5 6-4 win gives him a really tough second round assignment against Wimbledon champion Darcy Cowan who took three sets to defeat Paolo Mandonna in his first tournament since winning the grass crown.

Rob Bowenburg would have hoped for a more convincing display against Aussie qualifier Matthew Tobin, but a win is a win as he advanced in two hours and twenty-six minutes on an outside court. The Johannesburg and 's-Hertogenbosch quarterfinalist dropped the second set against the Australian and found himself in trouble at 3-3 in the third. But the aggressive CWLander managed to push on to take three of the last four games in a gutsy display; advancing to the second round 6-4 3-6 6-4. Bowenburg earlier this week suggested he could 'take' world number one Daniel Paez Blanco in the second round, and tomorrow he will have his chance after the Spaniard accounted for CWLand qualifier Scotland Rivers in straight sets. Rivers looked overawed by the big match occasion, and in the first set struggled to get any momentum as he was reduced to pushing the ball around and trying to keep it in play. That obviously didn't work for the exciting youngster, and he came out in the second set with more fire in his belly and was level at 5-5 with the best player in the world. But after scything a winner past Blanco to save one match point, he could not repeat his success as he put the next backhand into the net to hand Blanco the break and the match 6-1 7-5.

Finally, embattled big-man Heath Davis ran out of gas against super-fit 36-year old Jean-Alain Depuis. Davis managed to fire down a massive nineteen aces in the match, and was rewarded in the second set which he took 6-2. But the dogged Frenchman, who turns 37 in September managed to scrap his way back into the contest and take the decider to a tiebreaker. After over two and a half hours on court, Davis started to feel it against the barely-sweating Depuis who raced through the breaker to secure a 6-2 3-6 7-6(1) win. He now faces Croatia's Miroslav Brdar who embarrassed an out-of-form Tom Vollan the day before by handing him the double bagel. The big-serving Norwegian imploded on court as his first serve percentage dipped below forty per cent. Down 0-6 0-2, he seemed to give up completely as Brdar advanced 6-0 6-0.

Frustratingly for him, Serbia's Danijel Micic failed to capitalise on his great Davis Cup campaign as he bowed out in straight sets to Wayne Boyd. Micic almost single-handedly won the tie for the Serbs in an awesome weekend of tennis, but wilted on the smaller stage against the local. The San Jose champion played good economic tennis as he watched Micic frustrate himself in a 6-1 7-5 upset. Elsewhere, Morgan Carter made a massive comeback against David Champion to advance to a second round clash with qualifier Waylon Jones. Carter dropped the first set against the left-handed Aussie 1-6, and was staring at defeat after being broken in the first game of the second set. But the American came back authoratively to claim twelve of the last sixteen games to prevail 1-6 6-2 6-3 against the eighth seed.

  • Seeded players out: David Champion; Danijel Micic.

Penza Cup
First Round - Penza

Men's Singles (Finals - Top Half - Bottom Half)
Men's Doubles (Draw)

CWLand's Spas Delev has made a bright start in the Challenger in Penza after coming through a difficult first round clash with Evgeniy Volkoff with a win. One of the tougher 'floating' players going around, Volkoff made life difficult for Delev throughout the match in front of his home crowd. The Russian took the second set 6-4 after breaking the Delev serve early and clinging on for dear life to send the match to a third. But there Delev had too much class and he came out with a 6-2 4-6 6-2 win to set up a clash with China's Sheng Yiming. Qualifier Randy Banks put up a brave showing against Poland's Piotr Bak, but his first Challenger tournament ended valiantly in a tough loss. Banks dropped the first set tiebreaker 7-9 in what proved to be the difference between the two as the Pole edged out a tight 7-6(7) 4-6 6-3 win.

Elsewhere, Haiku Morkel completed a shocking couple of days for the Norwegians as he followed Kim and Tom Vollan out of tournaments in the first round with a loss to Joseph Tessier. The top seed cruised through the first set 2-6, before the French qualifier came back hard to secure an upset 2-6 6-4 6-3 win.

  • Seeded players out: Adam Murray; Haiku Morkel; Vaclav Zeman.
---

Hmm... ouch for Smeltz and for Norway in general (though K Vollan played OK). Some massive upsets in Hamburg open that draw wide open. Henson/Charles match of the day? I think so.

Always great to get past the first round, however Mustard has a tough opponent in the 2nd round. Sad to see Davis go out.

Think Tobin will become a top 50 player one day and playing for a tick over 2 hours will do wonders for my match against Blanco.

When Bowenburg was asked about his upcoming second round encounter with Blanco he said:
"Whatever happens it's a win-win situation unless I lose"

Also very nice to see Mustard smash Ninteh Doh.

Dear oh dear. Beaten by a pensioner (in tennis terms)

Haven't played singles for a few weeks though; a tough match was what was required - sadly I was on the wrong end.

At risk of turning into a doubles specialist.

Ah, crap. Didn't see that I had Blanco. Good to be able to measure up against the best going around though; pushing him to 7-5 in the second not the worst result.

German Hamburg Open
Third Round - Hamburg

Men's Singles (Seeds & Other Entrants - Seeds - Finals - Section 1 - Section 2 - Section 3 - Section 4)
Men's Doubles (Draw)

Third seed Sven Oxenstierna has kept on track for a maiden career title at the German Hamburg Open after defeating local hope Becker Haas in straight sets in their third round clash. The former world number four found a bigger challenge in the form of the thirteenth seed than he did in the second round against Michael De Kinsele, and was forced to go on the defence for much of the first set. But his ability to keep the ball in play and force the German to make mistakes worked in his favour as he stole the first set in the tiebreaker. Haas came out fighting in the second and surged to a 3-1 lead against the CWLand national. But Oxenstierna managed to chip away at the German and eventually overtake him to secure the match 7-6(3) 6-4 and advance to the quarterfinals. The French Open finalist now squares off with the man he defeated in the semifinals of Roland Garros, Dwayne Murdoch. Murdoch was impressive in his three-set victory over Sergio Joaquin, and will also look for his maiden career title this weekend. The pair do, however, face a tough semifinal assignment if Radivoj Daneu has anything to say about it. The Serbian number one was tested by China's Li Wang before prevailling in three. He now faces Sanchez Emelio who in the third round defeated his partner Ion Andueza.

On the other side of the draw, world number two Jason Hall looks odds on favourite to claim his fifth title of the season, but will be forced to beat Ukraine's Illya Altman if he wants to get there. The top seed was too good for CWLand's Jamee Hancianu in the day's last match; the American claiming a comfortable 6-2 6-2 win. Hancianu looked overawed by the occasion and still showed some immaturity as he was spanked in seventy minutes. Altman meanwhile proved too good for talented Spanish qualifier Marc Carretero; ending his run in straight sets 6-2 6-3. In the second quarterfinal, two unseeded players will do battle as Oneil Stewart faces Diego Hurtado.

  • Seeded players out: Becker Haas; Jamee Hancianu; Davis Kennedy; Li Wang; Patrick Pascaul.

In the only big upset of the doubles draw, fourth seeds Mark Harmel and Yves Parmentier were sent packing by Austrian brothers Jurgen and Zbiginiew Boniek. The French Open quarterfinalists worked hard but were unable to get the better of their opponents who advanced 6-4 4-6 [10-6]. They now face another set of brothers in the second round after Janos and Zoltan Varga produced a comfortable victory in their first match since Roland Garros.

In the most interesting of second round encounters, another set of brothers will be involved, though, on opposite sides of the net. Wimbledon champs Sandro Bachunelli and Hicham Hadir will face off against Vladimir Gryzlov and Antonio Bachunelli after both teams produced confident victories.

  • Seeded teams out: Mark Harmel; Yves Parmentier.

Indianapolis Tennis Championships
Second Round - Indianapolis

Men's Singles (Seeds & Other Entrants - Seeds - Finals - Top Half - Bottom Half)
Men's Doubles (Draw)

In the shock of the week, Wimbledon champion Darcy Cowan has bowed out of the draw in Indianapolis after giving up a one-set lead against CWLand's Jojo Mustard. Cowan took the first set convincingly with his powerful game seemingly on song in his first tournament since his maiden Grand Slam victory. But Mustard, a French Open quarterfinalist himself, managed to fight back brilliantly; putting to rest a frustrating grass season with some sensational tennis. Mustard's 3-6 6-4 6-4 win over the world number five is a stark contrast to last Sunday's loss in South America to world number 101 Randy Bruce. He faces doubles rival Wayne Boyd in the quarterfinals after he produced a 7-6(1) 4-6 6-0 win over Russia's Dmitry Orlov.

Elsewhere, Rob Bowenburg was unable to back up his big words against the world number one as Daniel Paez Blanco advanced comfortable. Although Bowenburg troubled Blanco at times with his explosive style, he underestimated just how good Blanco is at returning the apparently unreturnable. The Spaniard produced less unforced errors than Bowenburg and matched him in the winners stakes with the best indication yet that he's not just making up the numbers - advancing 6-4 6-4. His attempt to show he is not just a clay court star faces its biggest test yet in the quarterfinals with Brit Henry Charles waiting. In a replay of the Monte Carlo Masters final, Charles comes in on the back of some huge form after coming from a set down to beat former world number two Rick Henson in the match of the day.

  • Seeded players out: Miroslav Brdar; Darcy Cowan; Rasmus Olesen.

Second seeds Jojo Mustard and Heath Davis have made a winning start to their doubles assault after a tight win against Maarten Berg and Tommy Schaap. The pair were favourites to take the match, but were tested right to the end by the Dutch pair; Schaap seemingly taking inspiration from his fellow countryman as he more than held his own with the other three top fifty singles players. Ultimately, the CWLand duo advanced 6-3 7-6(1) to backup their win in Manta last week. They now face another team comprised of a singles star and an up-and-comer as Henry Charles and Jordan Mutch await in the quarterfinals.

  • Seeded teams out: None.

Penza Cup
Second Round - Penza

Men's Singles (Finals - Top Half - Bottom Half)
Men's Doubles (Draw)

Spas Delev will face Switzerland's Victor Zsasz in Friday's quarterfinals of the Penza Cup in Russia after a straight sets win against China's Sheng Yiming. Delev hasn't produced his best form this week, but has done enough to produce victories in both his matches; culminating in a hard-fought win against Sheng 6-2 7-6(2). The fifth seed now faces Zsasz who sent out a warning with a 6-0 6-2 thrashing of Jiri Gross. The winner of that match looks likely to face second seed Li Ming-Wang in the semifinals as the Chinese veteran continued his strong start with a 6-3 6-0 mauling of Poland's Piotr Bak.

  • Seeded players out: Adem Tadic.
  • Seeded teams out: Jiri Gross / Ivan Vuka; Boyd Mulenga / Adam Murray.

Great day for Mustard. After some recent disappointing results it was finally good to claim victory. However Mustard does prefer the underdog tag and usually struggles when he is fancied. Hopefully he can go much deeper into the tournament. Also good to get a win with Heath, will need to be on our game for the next round.

  • Third seeded wildcard Sven Oxenstierna has bowed out in straight sets to American Dwayne Murdoch in a rematch of their semifinal match at Roland Garros. There Oxenstierna walked away with the victory and berth in a Grand Slam final, but today was caught out by the world number fourteen who will tomorrow play in his first tournament semifinal outside of Grand Slam play. (Murdoch d. Oxenstierna, 6-3 7-6(3))
  • Murdoch now faces former world number 2 Radivoj Daneu in the semifinals after he also prevailed in straight sets. The world number four played some sparkling tennis against Sanchez Emelio and eventually prevailed in little over eighty minutes. (Daneu d. Emelio, 6-4 6-2)
  • In the other semifinal, world number two Jason Hall will do battle with Oneil Stewart after both men recorded impressive victories. In his best performance yet on clay, Hall smashed world number ten Illya Altman in straight sets - dropping just one game in the second set. (Hall d. Altman, 6-4 6-1). Meanwhile, Stewart looked to have dropped his bundle in the first set against Colombia's Diego Hurtado, before bravely fighting back to take a three-set win. (Stewart d. Hurtado, 1-6 7-6(8) 6-2)

  • Seeded players out: Illya Altman; Sanchez Emelio; Sven Oxenstierna.
  • Ion Andueza and Sanchez Emelio have survived a real scare in the quarterfinals of the doubles draw after coming back from 4-6 3-5 to secure a spot in the semifinals. The Spanish second seeds narrowly avoided defeat against the local wildcards Matthias Muller and Tim Zander before eventually stealing a win. (Andueza / Emelio d. Muller / Zander, 4-6 7-5 [10-4]). They now face Hunagrian brothers Zoltan and Janos Varga who smashed Jurgen and Zbiginiew Boniek in the semifinals.
  • In the other semifinal, Wimbledon champions Sandro Bachunelli and Hicham Hadir will face Marzio Claverini and Flavio Augusto Martins. Whilst the Brazilians were confident in victory, Bachunelli and Hadir only just scraped past Antonio Bachunelli and Vladimir Gryzlov in a battle between the Italian siblings. (S Bachunelli / Hadir d. A Bachunelli / Gryzlov, 6-3 2-6 [11-9])

Men's Singles (Seeds & Other Entrants - Seeds - Finals - Top Half - Bottom Half)
Men's Doubles (Draw)

  • World number one Daniel Paez Blanco has come crashing down after a promising start to his hard court season; giving up a one set lead in a disappointing loss to Great Britain's Henry Charles. The top seed took the first set comfortably, before Charles - fresh off a win against Rick Henson - lifted a gear to avenge his Monte Carlo Masters loss to secure an upset victory. Charles' victory overturns a 2-4 career quarterfinal record. (Charles d. Blanco, 3-6 6-4 6-2)
  • Charles faces another man who avenged a disappointing quarterfinal record after Jojo Mustard overcame a horrible start to beat Wayne Boyd. With a 1-4 record in quarters coming into the match, Mustard started in the worst possible way as his doubles rival claimed the first set within thirty minutes. But Jojo, who also came back from a one-set deficit in the second round against Darcy Cowan, refused to go out with a whimper and stunned the local crowd by securing yet another upset victory. (Mustard d. Boyd, 0-6 7-5 6-3)
  • In the other semifinal, tournament favourite Radek Spidla faces Morgan Carter - the final American in the draw. The Czech monster ended the big-serving killing run of France's Jean-Alain Depuis in clinical fashion; taking eight games on the trot to secure a win. (Spidla d. Depuis, 6-3 6-0) Meanwhile, Carter also produced a straight sets win in a meandering match against fellow American Julian Day earlier in the day. (Carter d. Day, 6-4 6-4)

  • Seeded players out: Daniel Paez Blanco.
  • Heath Davis and Jojo Mustard need not worry about Mustard being burnt out for tomorrow's semifinal after they exited in the match of the day to Henry Charles and Jordan Mutch. In a hotly-contested clash between the two sides, Mutch showed great promise alongside Charles who also looked in just as good form as he has in the singles draw. With the scores level at 6-6 in the second, Davis and Mustard produced a disappointing tiebreaker to send the British duo through to the semifinals. (Charles / Mutch d. Davis / Mustard, 6-3 7-6(2))
  • In some interesting scheduling, Charles and Morgan Carter - both singles draw semifinalists - will meet in the doubles semifinal; Charles being forced to play two later matches in what will be a tough day. Carter and Wayne Boyd pulled back a one-set deficit to defeat young duo Jesse Adams and Harry Thompson in their quarterfinal. Charles is rumoured to be considering withdrawing from the match to focus on his singles semifinal, which would hand the local duo a direct passage into the final.
  • The other semifinal will see French Open champions Hugh James and Ralph Robinson do battle with fourth seed Julian Day and Jean-Alain Depuis. After their finals loss in Båstad last week, the top seeds again were made to toil in their quarterfinal win against Anothy Ficher and Paolo Mandonna (James / Robinson d. Ficher / Mandonna, 7-6(3) 6-4). Day and Depuis, however, decimated Ritwik Bhutia and Harpreet Gupte and head into the semis with a world of confidence behind them. (Day / Depuis d. Bhutia / Gupte, 6-0 6-1)

  • Seeded teams out: Heath Davis / Jojo Mustard.
Penza Cup
Quarterfinals - Penza

Men's Singles (Finals - Top Half - Bottom Half)
Men's Doubles (Draw)

CWLand's Spas Delev has disappointingly bowed out of the Penza Cup in Russia after a three-set loss to Switzerland's Victor Zsasz. Delev, who had been pushed in his previous encounters this week, would have hoped he could edge past the Swiss number three, but the unseeded European managed to continue his good form to squeeze past Delev 6-3 4-6 7-5. Zsasz now faces Li Ming-Wang in the semifinals after he eased past Gocha Berianidze.

  • Seeded players out: Gocha Berianidze; Spas Delev.
  • Seeded teams out: Valery Belousov / Mykhaylo Martynenko.
