Despite all the seeds receiving byes into the second round, the
German Hamburg Open was not without its surprises in an enthralling start to the week. The highlight will no doubt be a hotly anticipated showdown between
French Open semifinalist
Juan Moreno and Roland Garros quarterfinalist
Oneil Stewart who bounced back from a first round exit in Båstad with a straight sets win over
Mark Harmel. The exciting Jamaican was last week upset by
Hugh James, but started his Hamburg campaign off promisingly with a
6-4 6-4 thumping of the Belgian.
Randy Smeltz and
Sergio Joaquin will face off in another promising second round clash after the Spaniard eased past Russian veteran
Vladimir Gryzlov in straight sets. Joaquin and Smeltz recently met at a Challenger event in Poznan with the world number 19 prevailing in straight sets
6-3 7-6(4). Joaquin, however, looked much more assured in his start to the tournament as he convincingly defeated the 40-year old Russian whose dogged nature could not withstand a
6-1 7-6(5) defeat.
Four qualifiers made it through to the second round, but
Johan Ortiz - who joins
Carlos Gonza,
Dieter Bonhof and
Marc Carretero in the round of 32 - has the toughest task of all of them as he faces world number two
Jason Hall. Ortiz, who some ranked as high as the twentieth best player at the start of the season, proved too good in his first round clash against Ukraine's
Roman Dorogan; the Colombian showing some glimpses of his best form in the
6-1 3-6 6-4 upset. Promising Spaniard
Marc Carretero will head into the second round hoping to cause a massive upset against twelfth seed
Almen Benaglio after he also produced a win in three. Carretero last week impressed against compatriot
Daniel Paez Blanco in Stuttgart, but looked disappointing in his first set against
Jose Navarro. But the Peruvian fell away as Carretero grew in confidence to secure an impressive
2-6 7-5 6-1 win.
The Varga Brothers will compete as a duo for the first time since Paris this week in the doubles draw, but could find themselves pitted together in the third round after
Janos Varga took a win over local
Alex Peters in the match of the day. Varga was made to toil for his victory over the course of three hours as neither man was willing to give anything away. But ultimately, the Hungarian number three completed a victory in his first match back from injury to advance
6-3 5-7 6-4. To have any hope of facing his brother, the world number 41 must upset ninth seed
Davis Kennedy.
Zoltan Varga also has a tricky assignment as he faces
Diego Hurtado of Colombia.
