Retirement thread

Cricketer Of The Year
I see that there is no thread or posts to pay tribute to not-so-famous cricketers who retire, hence creating this thread.

Niall O'Brien retired this week. Has been Ireland's flag bearer along with Porterfield and his brother for a long time and credit to him for playing for the country till their first test and achieving their goal.

Herath also fondly called as Fatteh and TPC here retires after the first England test. 430 wickets in 90 tests and above all, a beloved personality. Kept Srilanka in the mix singlehandedly after Murali's retirement.

We can also say this as sorta end of an era as he is the last active test cricketer to debut in the 90s. Great player and a person. Best of luck to his future! Looking forward for him to cross Hadlee and Kapil in the final hurrah.

Did Chris Gayle ever officially retire from tests? I know there is pretty much no chance of him actually playing against the red ball again but can't recall him officially calling it quits

He has been a bit ambiguous about it. He says he would like a farewell test but not to play many more.

Scored a lot of tough runs and was an able foil to Sehwag for a long time. Most probably will be remembered that way as well in the next generation (Sehwag-Gambhir partnership). Lasted and also did well much longer than we expected. Good luck for his future!!

Wait what? India have only won one world cup since he stated playing.

That Sehwag-Gauti opening pair was sensational for a short window. Much of what made India so strong back then.

Unlike many other batsmen India produces, Gambhir was actually quite good overseas. From 2007 WT20 to 2011 WC, he was one of the few (arguably only one) going around in world cricket who was excelling at all 3 forms of the game equally. Pity that he all of a sudden and without any obvious reason fell apart quickly after world cup 2011.

The 97 in the wc final is one of the great forgotten wc innings ( along with mahela's hundred in the same game). Doesn't get the recognition dhonis innings did, mainly because he played a crap shot to get out. But it was arguably way more important than dhonis knock.

And yes, he will also be remembered as one responsible for one of the best memes running in CW for a long time, Gambhiring.

The enigma of Gautam Gambhir - ESPNcricinfo

From the start of India's 2008 series in Sri Lanka to the end of their 2010-11 tour of South Africa, Gautam Gambhir averaged 60.52 and scored eight hundreds over a period of 24 Test matches. He made centuries in five successive Tests, falling just short of Don Bradman's record of six, and scored at least a half-century in 11 successive Tests, a feat previously achieved only by Viv Richards.

In 34 Tests either side of that Richardsian and almost Bradmanesque phase, Gambhir averaged 28.28.
