Auction draft II - ODI

Back by popular demand - the second round of the auction draft - ODIs.

Not much will change from the original in terms of the bidding process - all by email to cwauctiondraft@googlemail.com with a deadline and then I sift through them all working out who made the highest bid and then the highest left etc.

Again we will see muppets allowed to be nominated - but bear in mind you may end up with them, and also they will still need to fit the criteria of the player round we're in!

I'm going to allow a bit of discussion first before starting the entry process, in particular I want to discuss a couple of things:

1 - Squad size
The last draft just had a team of 11, but I was wondering if people wanted to draft a squad and then go from there as to naming a final 11. I like this idea but would welcome ideas as to how big a squad people want.

2 - Nomination process
The last draft split players into batsmen and bowlers. With ODI's the all-rounder needs to be be recognised in my mind - so what squad shape do people want?
Alternatively do you want a free for all? (after an initial round of wicket-keepers)

I'd love to get as many people as I can involved - the last draft ended up with 13 (although some weren't quite as committed towards the end) - and if people do drift away I will exclude them, and players will come back up for nomination. The commitment isn't that great in all honesty, as the drafts are run over every 3-4 days.

11 players. Makes balancing the side a challenge.

2) Nomination process

Fine with the way it was last time. Free for all sounds fine too. Would prefer the wicketkeeper round to be randomly one of the first 4 or 5 rounds, so that we don't all blow our budget first up on Dhoni/Gilchrist/Sangakkara.

For the squad size , i think it should be only 11 to be honest. As Gi Joe said balancing the side is the key .Though in ODI'S it may not be that big of a problem really.

As for the nomination process ,i think a wicketkeeper round and then followed by free for all seems fine ,or perhaps the last 2 rounds can be free for all. In any case the defintion of all rounders in ODI's gets altered and many batsmen can fill as decent bowlers.

EDIT: I think free for all. Keepers dont need a separate round either IMO. Allows people more freedom with building their teams.

I'm in for this one as well.

I vote that we pick just 11 players as it makes balancing the side an interesting challenge.

Also I vote that we just have a free for all on each round, also without having a keeper specific round. If you either forget or don't plan well enough to draft a specialist keeper then it's your own bloody fault. Just the same as if you deliberately nominate poor players and end up with them yourself.

basically I think the more freedom we have the more interesting it is to take part in, and als the more interesting strategies and teams we will end up with.

1. I guess 12 member teams would be the best idea. 14-15 member teams will see mediocre players getting selected in the end. One extra man sounds fine, as different posters can use this one in different ways, and make the game interesting.

2. Free for all sounds fine, as it makes strategizing for the game more challenging.

Would like the Squad size to be 12. Every team needs their drinks carrier.

Also reckon it should be a free for all. Allows for a greater amount of different strategies to take place.

If you look at the Test one, you'll find a number of players who would love to be classed as mediocre got drafted (mainly owing to tactical nominating!)

Understand people wanting to keep 11 but would not be adverse to say a squad of 13.

Squad of 13 sounds about right to me. Opens up more tactical possibilities if the games are to be simmed.

Has to be free for all selections. ODI teams can be formed out of so many combinations of cricketers. I find the fun in these drafts is getting team balance right, not being forced to construct a team in a pre-defined manner.

I won't be simming these but if there's someone who has a sim and wants to run it after the draft is over then they're free to. Would suspect if we went down a squad route then players would want to name 11s for each game.

Trust you won't spend all your money on one player then end up with a bowling attack where Bradman is the most dangerous then?

Yeah, the free for all idea seems to be gaining momentum so I suspect that's what we'll end up with.

The question now is total free for all or free for all after keepers?

As I said earlier, total free for all for me. Gives everyone the option of building their squad the way they see fit. Since its for ODI's, there are far less options when compared to Tests so lets give everyone a chance to build their teams the way they want to with more strategic choices.
